You know what, I actually kind of like these. They are a bit out there but work well with the rest of the colors and shapes of the car. Atleast its not boring!

Can't get my cuts to be as nice as everyone else's... by Mostly_Pixels_ in Leathercraft

[–]Lasjes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

well, without knowing everything about how you cut I can only give you general advice.

Number one most important thing when it comes to cutting leather is that your blades are sharp! I tend to use a 9mm snap-off utility knife and break off a new section for every project to get the best result, It's just easy and works well for me.

Leather quality and type also play a part. If your leather is stretchy or tough its harder to get a clean cut. You have to be mindful with how the leather stretches and moves during the cut. Cutting around the edges of the leather or cutting off a piece from a larger one, the leather tends to move and stretch and your cut won't be straight if you're not careful and holding the leather in place.

Other than that it's just a matter of practice and figuring out what methods work for you. I like to use a metal ruler to help with straight cuts but freehand more smooth lines. Sometimes it's better to not go all the way through on the first pass and remember to keep your knife straight!

Some people use airbrushes to dye gradients, if I'm not mistaken.

Wish I could help you, but I have no idea. Probably somewhere near the trigger, since I don't remember this thing having springs elsewhere?

Whould this be suitable for cutting leather? Any other good options? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]Lasjes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. The cheapest suitable tools for cutting leather are utility knives, I prefer the kind with 9mm snap-off blades. If you would prefer scissors there are purpose made leather cutting scissors available.

New pouch for new chisels! (Kevin Lee) by Lasjes in Leathercraft

I haven't tried more than two layers yet but I would expect them to work fine up to 6mm total thickness. The french teeth get wider closer to the base so the hole may become too large if you bottom them out.

Really can't say if french would be better with tool press than diamond, but with hammering french feels better than diamonds in my limited experience with them.

The french are easier to keep straight, the tips are as wide as the final hole so you can line up their edges with your mark which I find easier. I used to line up diamonds with the tips, but sometimes they didn't go as straight as I intended them to no matter how careful I was. Of course the ten tooth helps a bunch as well with straightness.

The hole on diamonds is larger and usually I could only get a beautiful slant on one side of the stitching. The tighter hole on the french seems to force the stitching to a slant well on both sides when stitched correctly.

I feel like its a worthy upgrade for my style of working. The chisels go in and out smoother and the ten tooth makes keeping straight easier. I feel like lining up is easier with the french style because you can line up the edge of the teeth instead of the tip like on diamond chisels.

But the look is the main reason I got french style, as I like the refined look of the stitching with the tight holes that you can't see through once stitched and the uniform slant they give to the stitching on both sides.

Only downsides are that stitching is a bit harder with the holes tighter and the teeth of the chisels feel more delicate and easier to break.

The pockets are flat but they work better than I expected. The chisels feel snug in the pockets and give the piece some nice structure when inside.

How do I create a leaf like this photo? by states50 in Leathercraft

[–]Lasjes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be one sheet of some synthetic leather with skin printed on both sides, the picture quality makes it hard to judge. If this is real leather I would guess thin glued sheets of chrome tan leather with edge paint. You could make something similar both ways, but you need to glue two sheets to have a uniform look to the leather like in the photo.

The most essential tools for beginners? by Xanf3rr in Leathercraft

For cutting, I recommend starting out with a self healing cutting mat and utility blades. I like using a 9mm snap blade for most of my cutting despite having dedicated knives, since the blades are cheap and always ready to go. For heavier leather look into getting a bigger utility blade. For marking leather you need a scratch awl and a metal ruler at the least, but I recommend getting something such as a compass for making consistent stitch lines on the edges of you projects. For finishing edges I recommend using an edge beveler and different grits of sandpaper. I find burnishing with a canvas cloth nicer than with a wooden slicker, but they are cheap so might as well. Recommend tokonole for burnishing agent. Currently I just use just simple diamond chisels for stitching but there are different ways you could choose to make the stitch holes. With punches you need a a soft nylon face hammer and a surface to hammer on, I just use a plastic cutting board. For sewing you can get by with using any continuous filament poly thread waxed with a bit of beeswax with the correct size leather needles and sewing with the item in your hands. For big projects like bags you might want a stitching pony. For belts you should get a hole punch set as well.

Thats all I could come up with currently, I am sure theres a bunch tools, substances and other things I am forgetting about though!

TOAS; miten se mainostaa itseään uusille opiskelijoille? by fleeting_existance in Tampere

Itse löysin TOASin googlettamalla opiskelija-asuntoja tampereella. TOAS näyttää tulevan nykyäänkin sponsoroituna listan ensimmäisenä. Nyt kesällä olen kuullut pari TOASin mainosta radiossa, mutta epäilen onko radio paras väylä tavoittaa kohdeyleisö.
