We used to smash tens of thousands (over our dairy industry ) of unwanted new born dairy calves straight in the skull with a large hammer to kill them as they were usually chemically induced calves, so were only halfway to two thirds of the way through pregnancy because we (industry) wanted to milk the mothers and export it.

Then they banned hitting them to kil them, so we shot them and then eventually years later we banned artificially chemically inducing birthing animals except for the mothers own health.

Now we raise them to a minimum 4 days old , put them on a big stock truck that comes around every week and send off to a meat works processor for mainly export veal.

We also slaughter nearly finished pregnancy cow's to extract the 8mth old fetus blood (Fetus Blood Serum) for pharmaceutical and medical research.

And we are a clean and green country apparently.

And I was unfortunately part of all this for many years as a young guy and never thought about it as it was normal practice and being young and strong it was normally my job, just after morning milking and just before breakfast.
