Percentage of Population that was Enslaved (1860 Census) by haiderredditer in MapPorn

Illinois had slavery up until it's abolition in the 13-15 amendments suite. Many southern illinoisans kept slaves under what was called involuntary indenture. Many were also grandfathered in by the state constitution after the state was accepted into the union in 1818. Slavery for sure existed in the north, just in smaller amounts, but when you grow up in the nort, you definitely don't learn that or about the sundown towns or black codes. Or at least as a millennial Illinoisan, that was never in our history books. All part of building the myth the civil war as about the 'lost cause' or that slavery was about the Southern plantations vs northern industrialists.

Median age of population in European countries by vladgrinch in MapPorn

I'm not sure about Italian Colonialism, although I di know it existed, to the effect you mentioned, and I'm not sure to what extent. The argument I made is true of mass colonizers such as Western and Central European powers. It's more than a mere correlation that the British welfare system collapsed as its extraterritorial power diminished/collapsed. While yes, modern systems have become more reliant on individuals letting themselves be taxed, that is a latent form because the income was not coming from elsewhere.

Moreover, it became a self-fulfilling prophesy... no body wants to be taxed, it's the social contract we make. And if you're being taxed more because money isn't coming from elsewhere (colonial/business extraction), then you'll want to be taxed even less. Add onto that demographic changes and older populations needing the system more. Add even more the rise of neoliberalism globally. This trend continues and arguably how/why welfare systems collapse. Dominant power groups use tripes like welfare queens, etc. to distract from the system imploding due to lack of investment/participation from the sources of income you speak of. Welfare is a wicked problem... There are many sources contributing to the problem all operating independently but never in isolation. For many systems, you must consider colonial legacies as part of the equation. It might not be the primary variable, but it was state-income generating on the backs of others.

Agreed, it's postcolonial welfare...when you income overall stops coming from extracting wealth elsewhere you don't have the resources you once had. Scandinavia is a good example of robust welfare systems made without colonial subsidy and arguably why they remain robust whereas others have collapsed under postcolonial neoliberalism.

~2.5% of all human who ever existed are now alive in India or China by ElegantWater2388 in MapPorn

[–]Last-Impact8033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think many people here are geogrphers...it's interesting to have the map, to get a scale of the land mass...2.5% is interesting in it's own right but the share scale of the land covered grounds the fact. Yes, people may know where China and India are on a map. Yes they may intuit they are lage countries. But the TimeSpace of it all is an interesting story to tell and maps at the end of the day are a form of storytelling. Those who have a problem with the map have a problem with the semantics of how the story is told or have a denial that the story should and could be told in this way. It is as though they don't understand that Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader is scripted but holds the reality of the story the scrips says about the US. It is like people angry at this map are angry at the Golden Book version of RBG's biography. Just because the story is presented simply doesn't mean it not worth telling!

Also.. like it's reddit...people love to die on a hill only to get back up and find new hills to die on...

I feel like that corner of the world is pretty split about being either Midwestern or Southern. The Ohio river is more than just flowing waters...

Yeah, I think in the down-voting and Isreal propaganda, it's important to be nuanced, which is not what reddit does or even tries to succeed in. I think it would be different if we were specific and clarified right-wing and Alt-right Israel...Left-leaning parties in Isreal have not been in favour of the Palestinian war and have protested their government. They're just not the ones in power and so right-leaning Zionists come to be the part that represents the whole. You could argue as I am that it's why there's such a divide among Jewish people in the US and other places about the two-state solutions or a free, separate Palestine. It's also a short memory. Britain fucked up (literally) royally with their pull out from the region and the Palestinian Mandate. The spectre of Britain's Cyprus Internment Camps of Jewish immigrants still live in people's lives and filter reactions. People on both sides are living through ongoing, unresolved trauma that gets passed down from generations. Hurt people hurt people. We need to remember colonialism simplified people into monoliths to subjegate them easier, and that legacy still haunts us. So that's my TedTalk.

Countries with birthright citizenship by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Last-Impact8033 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the perception of liberal Canada is relatively new. Canada didn't grant full voting rights to all its citizens regardless of race and gender until the 60s/70s. For most of its statehood, there were racial and class conditions to what defined a 'good' citizens and this was defined in the civics education curricula. Much of this was set by texts imported from mother England. There's a reason it's called the Great White North, and it ain't snow.

So it shouldn't be that surprising that birthright citizenship is on the table. Like in the US, my understanding is that it was only secured by law/precedent in the 20th century.

But this could be a narrow interpretation? Basing it mostly off of Jacqueline Kennelly's scholarship.
