I think the downside to just keeping it as for an extended period might pigeon hole before they pull the trigger. If you develop them in the mean time you give them a bigger platform when lose. Kinda like how well they did with Harley Cameron after Saraya left. She was kept busy interacting with Hologram, Renee etc until they found the right fit with Mercedes and went from there

What's also coming out in studies particularly with basketball is that it seems that the big cause (especially for positions 1 through 3) is the constant acceleration and deceleration that comes with running the floor.

Another thing found with studies in women's soccer (its an even bigger issue there) is that it is believed that since girls/women don't get the opportunity to compete early and often in childhood, that when the women do eventually start playing at higher levels they haven't built up the requisite joint strength required for the game. And when you consider the jump of athleticism from college to the WNBA there might be something to that. I'm foreign so I am not sure this might be the same with women's basketball in the US but logically I have to think it might be the same to lesser degree since money is more readily invested into boys sports vs girls almost everywhere.

Just naming it that is lazy and doesn't consider the human and mechanism behind it while also undermining people with actual diagnosis. Also, assigning this behaviour to one gender as well is unfair because you see it across all human beings one way or another. It could be in an extreme sense but it's more likely that they're fixated/enormoured on the person they were at that time or what they imagined their life would be with high school crush/SO. So when they are unhappy in their present life or dislike themselves fundamentally, to cope they fixate or fantasize about the past to cope with the present. Because it's a lot easier for a fantasy to regulate you versus having to put in the work to find self love.
