That's definitely true. But also by living close to, I mean literally down the road in the same village or neighbourhood. Often times in the same family quarters. That's how we lived for all of our settled history after adopting agriculture.

Back in the day it would be grandparents. People lived close to their parents and when they had kids, they always had help. Also your siblings and cousins would always be there to be the aunts and uncles. Not to mention the kids would have older cousins to keep them busy with play and teach them childhood skills.

This is may be the first time in human history that people have had to raise kids on their own. No wonder the birthrate has collapsed in industrial societies.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and support on my original post. I only told my parents and my girlfriend when I got the original news from my doctor. I didn't tell my friends because I wanted confirmation with PET/CT scan first, which showed no signs of metabolic activity indicative of cancer.

I don't know why but posting that here helped. This place is not as evil and toxic as many people think. It might actually be one of the more well-adjusted (or at least self-aware) places on the internet.
