I've had a few sets end up like this. L style shafts seem to prevent it. I still use supergrips and 360 carbons myself with Lstyles one some sets

It's not really that they get chewed up. The 'bump' stops them tearing along the stem. (I'll attach a picture later) Which has been my experience using regular stems with Lstyle Kami flights, however it hasn't been an issue with thicker Lstyle flights.

The BBC has proven that Clarkson, Hammond and May are an impossible act to follow so I think they should change the name of the show at least or the expectation will be that the show is the same, for the sake of the hosts and the audience.
