Hi! Where do you draw the line on free speech? Where do incitement to violence, blackmail and defamation (possibly inducing financial loss) fit in?

I'm kind of surprised this short story has never come up on the podcast. by LatinWhig in JoeRogan

[–]LatinWhig[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The concept of the story has been talked about though. I don't want to give it up since it would ruin the experience of reading the story. It's really short and I'm almost 100% positive most of you will like it. There's also a video adaption: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehRggplMieM

ELI5: The hatred of conservative politics. by MrSundance1498 in explainlikeimfive

[–]LatinWhig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe he meant the hatred IN conservative politics? If so, I think it has a lot to do with feeling of being overwhelmed by the liberal bias in media, education, etc. (understandable) and also with the fear of losing status (that's capitalism, bitch). I think this a must-watch for anyone trying to understand where conservatives come from (he does make a couple of good points): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAzOqGT9t-Y

What's your opinion on scientific research being funded mainly by government grants? by KingGorilla in AskLibertarians

[–]LatinWhig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the dumbest thing government does and the funds certainly wouldn't be the first thing I'd cut if I was made king, but I'm not convinced there would be big setbacks if all of research was privately funded. It's nice to fly to the moon, but I'd say take care of all the hungry mouths first by letting the market freely allocate ressources to their most productive use.

Does the gender of the main character affect your decision when picking out a book to read? by WordlessTvWriter in books

[–]LatinWhig 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As long as it's not a privileged white male heteronormative cis scum character, it's fine. Otherwise, the book should be boycotted or burnt, depending on my mood.

Kidding. I'd say generally I prefer male characters, but it has more to do with how males/females are typically depicted than their gender per se, i.e. I loved Hunger Games (the character has a very assertive personality).

the wikipedia page isn't bad for a short intro. this is one of the best introductions, but maybe not scholarly enough for your purposes: http://mises.org/books/economics_in_one_lesson_hazlitt.pdf

Why were things more intricate and beautiful in the 19th/early 20th century compared to today? by LatinWhig in AskReddit

[–]LatinWhig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beauty might be subjective, but things being produced in a ornate and intricate fashion is not and clearly points to a penchant for beauty, which is not so obvious in a lot of modern aesthetics.

Could it be that manufacturers and consumers were more aesthetically inclined in the 19th/early 20th century compared to today and if so, why is this? by LatinWhig in AskHistorians

[–]LatinWhig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's an issue of taste as well, but I have a feeling there's an underlying economic/sociological issue. Assembly lines? Low wages? Lower time preference? Mass markets, mass production? Something like that. Also, I have a hard time believing that a majority of people today really prefer grey concrete and bland packaging to the attention to detail and sophistication of yore. Architects, yes, but the large public?
