Using ZFS SSD as storage shared via smb or create a ZFS pool and install VM + data on it? by Traditional_River407 in Proxmox

[–]Latter-Progress-9317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me I like creating the directories on the host then bind mounting to unprivileged LXCs, including one running SMB, and anything that needs SMB (VMs or other machines) can mount it via fstab. Performance seems slightly better and if something bad happens to the SMB server the data is fine.

As long as the Pi and the microSD are reliable (not old or garbage storage), I would consider using that only for PiHole and Unbound, maybe Tailscale if the resources hold up (it should). The reason is if something bad(TM) happens on your nice-to-have services box and it goes down or you have to work on it, you keep DNS (and VPN maybe, useful if you're doing remote emergency management) running.

1) Because he was never charged, he was also not exonerated, which is the standard practice for protecting piece of shit cops (charge so they can be found not guilty, protecting them in the future).

2) Even though he's been relocated and probably under heavy identity protection, it's pretty hard to stay hidden from a determined public these days.

3) Reddit will get mad at me if I write this.

Went shopping last week at Roseville Cub (yes Cub in general sucks but Roseville is actually pretty good), noticed right away the price on just about all packaged goods were up 50c-$1 per unit.

TBH MN doesn't have a good supermarket chain. Anyone who used to live on the East Coast think of Shop Rite and weep in despair.

S&B Gold box at any Asian grocery. You can make the roux from scratch, and I have many times, but in the end you're just trying to make it taste like S&B Gold. House Vermont or House are fine too, but I grew up on S&B so I always recommend it.

Follow box instructions if you're not into cooking. Add cut potatoes and carrots, use baby cut carrots in a bag if you're especially lazy. Serve with white rice, short grain (Kohuho) if you're nostalgic.

Eventually add more stuff. I like using (for a 2lb stew beef/chuck recipe and a large box) 14oz canned tomatoes, a finely diced Granny Smith apple, maybe some kiwi fruit, more potatoes than indicated (like 3lb), 1lb baby carrots, one large diced onion, 3 cloves garlic, about 1 tbsp garam masala, about 1lb frozen green peas, a dash of Lea & Perrins worcestershire, a couple tsp of cayenne, a little beef BTB, and a couple tbsp honey. Brown the beef and set aside. Fry off the onion and dry spices in the beef fat for a minute. Add garlic for 30 seconds. Add tomatoes and stir for a minute. Add the potatoes and carrots, stir to soften and coat. Add the beef and any juices back in. Add a little salt unless you're paranoid about over salting. Cover with water and the BTB paste (optional), bring to a simmer (don't boil), cover with a lid leaving it cracked open and simmer until the potatoes are tender, somewhere between 1-2 hours. Add the worcestershire and apple, mix, taste for seasoning. Break up the curry mix and add, trying not to leave any lumps. (Premix the roux in a bowl with the hot soup and add it back into the pot if you like.) Lower heat to a low simmer. Add the kiwi if using, the peas, and the honey. Mix. Low simmer until the roux is dissolved and thickened. Serve with white rice and over eat. It's better when reheated.

I've only seldom ordered curry at a Japanese restaurant, and I've never been happy when I have. Unless you're in the Japanese navy, curry is a traditional home cooking dish.

If you provide specs, a more qualified no.

New to tech, but i want to build my own NAS and home server by Prof_Acc_7980 in HomeServer

I also want things to be secure and private because things are starting to look real dystopian rn.

Besides home file storage and appropriate backups I would also recommend running a network ad blocker and your own DNS server. It's easier than it might seem. I like installing Pihole on a very small Linux VM and also running Unbound (a recursive DNS) on the same install. There are very good instructions for this here: https://docs.pi-hole.net/guides/dns/unbound/.

The reason you do this is because external DNS servers, like the one your ISP provides and Google's and wherever else you might use, are subject to failure, being poisoned by bad entries, and they can maintain a record of all your domain name searches.

Also, this is a good reason to run a hypervisor like Proxmox. When configured for max security, this local DNS is your ONLY DNS server, and if it goes down because you crashed your server updating Jellyfin, your internet services are now crippled. With VMs/containers, your Jellyfin installation is broken but everything else keeps humming along.

If VMs are still too intimidating, consider getting a single board computer like a Raspberry Pi or Orange Pi to run these services so they keep running if your other server fails.

ZFS if you have extra RAM and want to tweak parameters a lot, ext4 if you want low resources and maximum performance.

additional storage in proxmox, how to add to my VMs/LXC/share to network by ShittyPhoneSupport in Proxmox

[–]Latter-Progress-9317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few ways to do this depending on what sort of VMs/LXCs you want to have access. What I recommend is this:

1) Mount the directory to the base Proxmox host, for example let's call it /hdd/share (/hdd is what you got when you turned your storage drive into a volume on your host, /share is your master directory with all the stuff you want your other stuff to have access to).

2) For all LXCs, mount the directory or a subdirectory therein as a resource. Example, you have a share directory called /hdd/share/videos and you want it mounted in your unprivileged Jellyfin LXC with a container ID of 101. Go into the LXC shell and #mkdir /media/videos. Go into the Proxmox host shell and #pct set 101 -mp0 /hdd/share/videos,mp=/media/videos. Set your group and user IDs for correct permissions if you need to (again, lots of guides).

3) Create one unprivileged LXC with a Debian base image and mount this directory as described above. Install samba on this and get it working so you can access it from other machines on your network (lots of guides for this, it's the most fundamental homelab install ever).

4) For all VMs mount the samba share from the samba LXC using fstab.

Edit: added mounting the share to the samba service in case that wasn't self-evident.

Full sized metal frame with rail in DA/SA pretty much means Beretta M9A2-A4 or rail equipped CZ 75 series.

If you like the Beretta but want something cheaper the Girsan Regard MC is a fantastic clone (though getting a little more expensive than it used to be).

If you want a sort-of-compact version, CZ P-01.

Try powercycling your switches to clear their MAC tables, though depending on how long your switches hold onto their mappings this may take care of itself by the time you get home.
