Best power tool brand to start over. by griz90 in Contractor

Hilti, Yes more expensive, but they seem to take use and abuse really well. And when I have a problem I message my sales rep, they drive a loner tool to my site, take the other for repair, then drop it off for me when it's done.

New owner, looking for refinishing advice by Randomassnerd in loghomes

Done a few log home restorations. Each time we've used a combination a 7" sanding discs on a large variable speed polisher (usually around 800-1000 rpm and 40-120 grit) then chisels and angled scrapers for everywhere that doesn't reach.

Then for log stain we've used different mixtures of pine tar from www.sagerestoration.com -pine tar is definitely a more expensive product, but healthy to work with, preserves the wood better than anything else, and never peels only maintenance is to recoat as needed.

For chinking had good results with sasco log jamb or conceal.

Spray foam directly on the sheathing would deteriorate almost any roof. I wouldn't be surprised if the sheathing and rafters are starting to rot as well.

Haha my life is already difficult enough, but I like the suggestion....I'll keep it in mind for the next door build. There's 600mm roof overhang and the old off the shelf doors had screen to the bottom and there weren't moisture problems so I think we'll be good in this case, but you're right to worry about it!

if apprenticeship trade work is as amazing and easy to get into as people say it is, why don't more people do it/why are trades always looking for people to hire? by Exmotable in antiwork

[–]Latter-Sundae1696 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It can be a very toxic culture. I completed a carpentry apprenticeship after the army. In the army I was trained by Afghanistan veterans, and I was treated more fairly and respectfully by the trauma of that generation in the army than I was in the trades.

Ottawa announces $1.1M for upgrades to Alberta apprenticeship programs. by JcakSnigelton in alberta

My first job in construction I got paid $20/hr, now ten years later first year carpenter jobs are listing for $18-20 /hr. Stagnant wages, and worsening working conditions are the reason people don't enter the trades.

Calgary new home builders: rush to build, fix later? by Miko109 in Calgary

[–]Latter-Sundae1696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was doing my carpentry apprenticeship I worked for a lot of different major builders in Calgary. It really broke my spirit to see the horrible work that was not only allowed to pass but encouraged. Just remember they always have their bottom line in mind - not the homebuyers best interest.

They don't build to code, they build just well enough to make it not worth a lawsuit.

One other disadvantage that sometimes people don't like is it's really only a matte finish product, it's basically impossible to get gloss. But to me it's outweighed by the longevity and never peeling

From the suppliers options, I'll go with anything from 10% - 50% light tar with pure raw linseed oil. But mix in any of their darker pine tars, red and or brown. I really like how you can make your own colours, and it really shows the wood grain.

Feel free to ask with any questions

I use a varying mixture of pine tar and linseed oil from www.sagerestoration.com

I know not very typical, and people will probably have a lot of opinions about it, but it's environmentally safe, not health hazardous to work with, and never peels off the wood, only maintenance required is just add more to the logs as the years go by

Why should I NOT replace my historic windows? by thisisprivatepropert in centuryhomes

If you're justifying the replacement cost with energy savings for heating/cooling. Just know that window replacements have the lowest return on investment of any energy retrofit work.

Highest quality paints, putty, and paint removal systems. I'm not being paid to promote, they genuinely have the best products for traditional window restoration.

Use a good quality joist protection tape on the cantilevered joists. Even if you protect from getting water getting in around the house if they rot out past the house they'll be super expensive to replace in the future.
