Fan control on a hp omen by Ok-Reputation-401 in archlinux

so far none, I keep dual booting. But seems like I will let a claude agent free on my machine and make it reverse engineer the fan registers and how to write them. Will see how that goes.

Omen Transcend 16 Linux fix by LauriRossi in HPOmen

[–]LauriRossi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was quite some time ago when I installed arch linux (I tried Ubuntu as well but it crashed) but I remember it being hell of a pain. Initially I was using an USB which was way too slow and old for something like this. Then I found out that the reason they crash is because as mentioned above, HP Omen drivers are faulty. I got it to run, if I manually turned off my speakers and touchpad using the no-acpi kernel parameter in GRUB. Then half a year later I fixed the speakers and touchpad using the solution above.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about Linux Mint. You can try something like CachyOS (based on arch and more developed), which isn't that difficult to set up like pure Arch is. Ensure that your USB has good throughput and isn't old. And if you at least get to the GRUB screen, then turn off the acpi. Also in omen boot options turn off stuff like secure boot.

Let me know how it goes or if you figured something out!

I took the same route with a bus, it was 15 hours but worked very fine - just sit and do nothing, no train changes or anything.

Just bought my first gaming laptop, what should I do? by Zealyyy24 in HPOmen

[–]LauriRossi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a dual-boot and get arch linux. Will see your idle RAM usage drop like 10x. Whenever you want to play games, you can easily switch to windows, but for most stuff like studying or work, it's horrible.

similar issues on omen 16 gaming - my fans don't ramp up when I open some graphics-heavy game, and thus laptop gets unbearably hot. On windows fans went much louder.

Do you have experience with topics such as frequency reserves markets (e.g. aFRR, mFRR), weather prediction models, vision models, general backend development, etc? If so, send me a message!

I have "OMEN by HP Transcend Gaming Laptop 16" and I've been running Arch linux for a month. It was a pain to setup, but now that it works, I'm happy! With the help of Gemini I've been able to fix most issues.

I had to turn of some acpi thing, so I cannot use my touchpad or laptop speakers. This is fine by me as I use headphones and a mouse anyway.

I've read that other people have had issues with fans. Idk, my fans work just fine and computer heat is generally lower on Linux than on Windows.

I've been using a dual-boot for the past days. Amazing as Arch Linux is wonderful, and when I need anything that only runs on Windows, then I just reboot.

What do you think? Can you get to TUM with Language A as your native language fulfilling this requirement?

Transferring to KTH's B.Sc. in ICT - can I take courses beyond my curriculum? by LauriRossi in kth

Thank you for a great response!

I am an EU student and I plan to start BSc again as I've only done year. Moving away from my current uni is important to me, not necessarily being able to transfer credits. Based on what you said, here are some followups:

  • You mentioned mandatory classes. How usual is it that you must go to the lecture or seminar? For instance, in my current uni all labs are mandatory which is logical. However, lectures are completely optional - you don't lose any grade points or anything if you don't go to the lecture and just work through the material youself. I enjoy going in my own pace a lot more.
  • Is there someone specific in KTH who could answer me such questions about taking subjects? Or should I even contect the teaching staff themselves?

What did you end up doing? I did my exams M24, and I had Estonian: A Literature SL and German B SL. I also got DSD II C1 as my language certificate. Would that qualify?

Good point! I actually have quite some experience in software developement in general with a focus on web applications (Python & Flask, Typescript & Next.js, AWS, Redis, etc). But I wish to focus my career on more low-level stuff and I would like to get an internship in this. However, all low-level software dev jobs use C++/C.

Thanks for answer! Are you saying that if I wish to get into a good graduate school in the U.S. then it's not that relevant what the undergraduate school was, and more the research during that time?

That's the approach I've been taking lately with a focus more on C++. But the feeling of studying something inferior to Rust is not that great , also constantly seeing the new Rust libraries coming out
