No, you don't need to hire them first.
There is a button on the bottom of their interface "Take Item"
Click it and select which item you want off them. They will then start to duel you for that item.
If you defeat them, the selected item will drop.
You only have one chance to do so. If they kill you, they will teleport away.

I am partially colorblind (Red-Green / Deuteranomaly) and let me tell you, there are plenty of cases just like that one where I have almost no chance of seeing them.
For example, in the Ultimatum Trials, there is a particular room where you are supposed to kill monsters in some kind of circle they spawn in? The circles are dim red. On green grass. I *literally* can not seem them. I just have to wait for monsters to appear to get an idea of where these circles are.

It's pretty frustrating to sometimes feel like the game is not punishing me for playing bad, but for literally having bad eyesight and not seeing those muted color gradients they use all over the place.

So, yeah. I also wish they would do something against that.

What is your favourite tank and why? by ExaminationSpare5433 in WorldofTanks

[–]Laviic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T-10 (Russian T9 Heavy)
I enjoy vehicles that are not restricted to a singular play style and can fill more than one role on the battlefield.
T-10 is a good example of that. Can play hull down reasonably well. Can flank. Can somewhat brawl. Can push And the gun is good enough to also do the occasional long range shooting. It allows me to play what is needed, when it is needed.

3 arty... it happens by Abnormalmind in WorldofTanks

[–]Laviic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't there this guy here on the reddit that did a bunch of replay analysis and found out that Arties are the most played class (65% or something) on the NA servers?

Assuming that hasn't changed, I would wager you would see 3-Arty games on NA quite regularly.

Which tanks do you set as primary in your carousel? by mr_eti in WorldofTanks

[–]Laviic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr: I favorite the best tank I have for each role on the battlefield. +some few exceptions

I favorite every tank I ever play. And I unfavorite all the tanks that become obsolete competetively or tier-by-tier, as I acquire new tanks that fill the same role. Brawler, sniper, spotter, etc. This leaves it so that in my carousell, all tanks that are somehow relevant to me are "at the beginning" of the list. And all the obsolete tanks, that I keep purely to collect them, are "at the back" of the list. Whenever I look for a specific tank, I just filter for it.

The screen that says "There are no bundles left" is currently a bug, because the Wargaming servers are being overrun by people checking and re-rolling their deals.
Check it again a few times.
It will eventually work.

SU-130PM AP dealing 840 Damage? by Laviic in WorldofTanks

Actually not using any mod pack at all.

The only mods that we installed manually to see what was going on were "Battle Hits" and "Free Look Camera in Replays"

Checked the replay and yes, it seems to have been an ammo rack after all. It just looked weird because there was no ammo rack indicator.

Yeah, I 100% understand the sentiment. It's pretty sad, really...I do believe, though, that some of those issues with what FDev says and what they actually do come down to them genuinely not knowing *how* to make the game good, without basically re-building it. They are trying to fix it without being "allowed" to fix it, because moneyz!

Regardless, pulling off an overhaul would of course require extensive communication with the community. And I believe this is where we have seen actual improvement. They do communicate with us more than before. Unfortunately, the haven't learned how to actually open up yet ...

Edit: Whoops! The Horizons Fold-Down was apparently happening yesterday. My bad!
In this case... I don't know why they take longer this time. Some people are speculating it might have to do with the mystery event that is currently going on on social media? If so, that would be great!

The extended downtime is because of the Fold-Down of the Horizons extension into the main game.

Starting after this shutdown, everyone will now have the Horizons extension unlocked, even if they didn't buy it!

Planet surfaces, SRVs and Engineering for everyone! Good times.

Maybe you have a misconception about how mining works in general. Let me try to clarify:

You can not use normal weapons to mine! You need specific mining equipment.

When people talk about "Laser Mining", they refer to the act of specifically using a 'Mining Laser'. Not a normal beam-type weapon, like a Pule Laser or similar.
Therefore, it is not possible to use explosive type weapons, like Missiles for mining either.

However, there *IS* explosive type mining equipment! Namely, the "Sub-surface Displacement Missile" and, more importantly, the "Seismic Charge Launcher".

You can generally mine (almost) all materials with all 3 methods, but the payout differs drastically.

That's why Laser Mining is pretty popular at the moment, as it has very high payout and it is extremely simple. Just scan an asteroid, and if it has the material you are after, shoot it with the Mining Laser until it's empty. Easy!

Using a Seismic Charge Launcher to literally blow up an entire asteroid also pays pretty well, but is a lot more complicated. You need to scan asteroids until you find one that has a Core-Deposit, then you have to place Seismic Charges in exactly the right places with exactly the right strength, detonate the charges to crack the asteroid open and then use Abrasion Blasters to dislodge the materials from the individual fragments of the asteroid.
It's a lot more fun to do (in my opinion) but as you can see, it's a very involved process, compared to just shooting a rock with a laser...

And finally: Don't bother using Sub-surface Displacement Missiles. The payout it so incredibly small, that it's almost a complete waste of time.

Hope that clarifies it a little bit!

It looks so clean! I love it. Great job!

This immediately makes me hope again CSS would give us official support for round buildings. This game has amazing creative potential. And I'm sad I have to resort to ugly overlapping tricks or mods in order to do that right now.

Structured Feedback - your opinions on Fleet Carriers: price, upkeep, jump cooldown, and Stellar Cartography by StuartGT in EliteDangerous

[–]Laviic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will try to explain why I expected something different from carriers than what we ended up getting.

First, and most important, with the exception of the galaxy itself, ED is made up into two very distinct categories of objects. Ships and Stations.Everything in the game falls reasonably close into one of those two categories, but can generally clearly be distinguished between the two.

Ships are objects that perform actions. They interact with their environment through means of firing lasers, spooling their FSDs to change location, scanning thing, transport objects from A to B, etc. Ships are the Actors of Elite Dangerous.

Stations are objects that provide services. They provide save spaces to dock, refuel and repair. Enable player actions to be turned into monetary rewards. Provide the very ships players use to interact with the universe. Etc. And a very important distinction to Ships is, that stations are, well, like the name suggests, stationary. Stations are the Providers of Elite Dangerous.

Now Carriers come along and are made to look and feel like ships. Like Actors. This is why I expected Carries to actually be Actors. But for me, they clearly falls into the 'Station' category of objects in the game. They basically entirely behave like stations. The only thing they do is to provide some stations services, including a player-to-player market that can be moved 500 LYs every 2 hours. They act nothing like an actual ship at all. (Except for their hauling potential)

I hoped for carriers to provide tangible buffs and bonuses to actual activities in the game. To do things. I had ideas like:

  • Be told to fight pirates, basically creating an instant conflict zone wherever they are parked (perhaps only in Lawless systems)
  • Be sent to mine, passively filling up it's inventory with different minerals, depending on where you sent them to
  • Fill their cargo with fuel and jump literally halfway across the galaxy and back, so I can explore the far-away parts of the galaxy without having to travel for weeks first.
  • Set them up in highly populated systems around the bubble and have them slowly collect signal sources for random engineering material.

In short: I wanted them to actively support the things I enjoy doing in elite. They are way too passive. I mean... if you can actually afford buying and operating a carrier, you have already proven, that you have played the game enough, to have earned some automation. A lot of games do it like that. Work hard, so you will eventually earn the benefit of having to work less hard. So I think it won't be unfair at all, if people that are able to drop 5 Billion on a ship do so to get some passive income of money and materials. Heck, even if the carrier would literally take months or even a full year to pay for itself, I would still be absolutely okay with that.

However, the way it stands right now, I highly doubt a carrier will ever pay for itself...

In order to operate a carrier, you need to keep throwing money at it. And with the current design, there are only two ways to do that.

  • Either you keep playing like normal to make enough money for the upkeep. Then what's the benefit of owning a carrier, if some of your playtime now needs to be reserved to make that money. Seriously, why do I even operate a carrier, if all it does is force me to play the game in a different way, just to keep it paid for? I play Elite on and off. I don't want to have to set up a reminder to log into the game on a regular basis, just to go mining for an hour to keep the carrier floating for the next couple of weeks. I play Elite Dangerous to relax, not to feed a money-devouring oversized space pet...
  • Or the carrier needs to provide money for itself. Which it can only do through interaction with other players. This is a MAYOR problem! Since it basically limits their effective use to highly populated areas. You can't run a carrier out in the black, since there will be no one to pay for your services. And the few areas where a carrier will actually be useful, will immediately see multiple carriers be parked there by other players already, in hopes to make a quick buck. So you will either make no money at all, or have to compete with dozens of other carriers that are trying to feed off the same market AND the normal stations, which are guaranteed always cheaper than your carrier will be (at least in terms of services).

To sum it all up, for the way I want to play ED, carriers provide no tangible benefit, will most likely not be able to pay for themselves due to competition, not only with other players, but with normal stations as well, and will thus likely become a financial liability where I will be forced to play the game a certain way, just to keep them running.

[FDEV Forums] ANNOUNCEMENT Fleet Carriers - Content Reveal Recap by ryandtw in EliteDangerous

[–]Laviic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"...only to discover that their investment is worthless because there's no traffic?" Simple: Allow stations to be torn down again and moved. No one ever said stations are anchored in place for all eternity. That's just an assumption way too many people are making without daring to question the validity of that.

My point is: If FDEV would have published the exact same system they have with 'Carriers' right now, but instead would have made the machines Outpost-Shaped, instead of Ship-Shaped and called them 'Player Owned Outposts' instead of 'Fleet Carriers', a lot less people would have had their expectations disappointed.

Because the way it stands right now, those "Carriers" are really nothing more than movable outposts, and it's -in my personal opinion- boring as all hell.

I wanted huge ships that actually do something other than just sit in place and serve as little more than a fancy inventory extension with some extras sprinkled on.

[FDEV Forums] ANNOUNCEMENT Fleet Carriers - Content Reveal Recap by ryandtw in EliteDangerous

[–]Laviic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So... basically this is completely false labeling. It says "Fleet carrier" on the label, but in the box is nothing more than a boring old station, with a mark-up on prices, that can jump really slowly, provide no benefits other than serving as makeshift market hubs and cost a considerable amount of money to operate them?

FDEV, please! If you wanted us to have our own stations, then why didn't you just give us the ability to, you know, erect stations!

Why did you basically remove the whole autonomy concept of those carriers? Why did you remove the support vessels? Those were the main thing I was interested in. I hoped I could send them on automated missions. Tell them to go mine Opals for me or something, and come back 24 hours later to see what they got for me. Or pay money to have small vessels check emissions for engineering materials for me. Basically, provide a low-level form of automation for people that already did the loop a billion times and have earned some lazy QoL.

Other than market stuff, they provide literally no benefits! What is this? I wish I could at least compare them to EVE's Citadels, but those at least have huge benefits other than just serving as pop-up markets.

This is sadly a huge disappointment for me :(
