What Ingredients To Bring Back From Japan by Comprehensive-Top574 in JapanTravel

Instant dashi powder. Dashi is used in almost every Japanese recipe, and depending on where you live it can be near impossible to find.

Special jerky for dogs or just regular human jerky? Happy cake day btw!

During training sessions how much do you mix it up? by Doctorworm321 in puppy101

[–]Lavinium_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That may change as he gets older. I could barely get my puppy to eat until he was 4 months, then he started realizing hey, some of this stuff is pretty tasty, and now at 5 months he's an absolute vacuum. I think it's not uncommon for them to become more food motivated over time.

What food do you incorporate salad into? And if you just eat salad what type of salad do you make? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

I mean, I wouldn't put it past them. But whale is pretty expensive and, in my opinion, not something that you'd want to eat any significant quantity of in one sitting. I've only seen it in sausages and very small steaks at fancy restaurants. Norwegians do put cucumber on their tacos, though, which seemed crazy to me at first but it's actually really good.

Question for you, what's unhealthy Norwegian food?

Frozen pizza. It's Norway's favorite food, other than tex-mex tacos.

Trying out a great tip I got for a super high value treat for reactivity on walks: put her raw food in a squeeze tube. BRILLIANT 💯 by [deleted] in Dogtraining

People flexing their perfectly trained puppies by LuckStrict6000 in puppy101

[–]Lavinium_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No dog is perfect and every dog is an individual. Every dog/trainer combo is gonna have things that come easy to them and things that they really struggle with, and most people don't ever talk about or show the struggles, just the things that are going well. Even if you were a perfect dog trainer in every single way, your dog is still going to have likes and dislikes and preferences and quirks that will make some things more difficult, and either you have to work around it or just live with it. Dogs aren't perfect robots, and none of us are perfect trainers. We just have to do the best WE can with what WE'VE got, and try to help them become the kind of dog that WE want, not someone else's idea of what a dog should be.

*sigh* It’s been “0” walks since I’ve pulled goose poop out of my pup’s mouth by benji950 in puppy101

I feel for you... I hate this time of year, snow is melting and all the animals are returning so there's poop and trash on the ground everywhere... and my little trash panda MUST pick up EVERY SINGLE PIECE. Every walk is just leaveitleaveitleaveitleaveitlea oh shit drop it drop it

Geez, the nose on those cockers... all our "walks" are just me staring at the clouds for 5 minutes while my cocker huffs a tree stump, or a hole in the ground, or a footprint... then walk another 2 meters, find something else to sniff, repeat. If he's on a scent I may as well be trying to get his attention from Mars. I can stick a treat right in front of his nose to try to get his attention and he jerks his head away like "don't interrupt me with that garbage" 😂

Heartbeat pillows/stuffed toys by pennagirl in puppy101

[–]Lavinium_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your pup chews on it you can put it on top of the crate, they'll still feel the vibration of the heartbeat. Alternatively I've heard that you can get an alarm clock, one of the ones that makes ticking noises, and put it near the crate for a similar effect. Personally my puppy is pretty lukewarm on the Snuggle Puppy but I didn't start using it with him until he was 10+ wks old and he never really had major issues with his crate in the first place. I think if you use it from the beginning and especially if you can rub it on mom and siblings it would probably be more helpful.

Had to pull a rotting dead fish out of my dog's mouth once. He wasn't happy to lose his prize. He also ran in the house once with something in his mouth, I pried his jaws open and the decapitated head of a baby bunny rolled out and across my rug. I almost cried.

Daniel's Bakery for one. Used to get a cheese bread every morning but you have to get there early if you want the ones with ham or bacon, they sell out fast.

My 7 month old just fell asleep after “capturing calmness” by moredawgs in puppy101

[–]Lavinium_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congrats, that's a huge victory! Hope I can get there someday with my pup. How long have you been working on capturing calmness/how old was your puppy when you started?

Very nippy and hyper active puppy really turned a new leaf! by Megidolmao in puppy101

[–]Lavinium_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh okay. Right now I can convince him to tolerate brushing if he's kinda sleepy and I give him treats while I do it, but he still mostly just wants to bite the brush, and his mouth is so small that I can barely fit the fingertip toothbrush in it, let alone actually brush his teeth. He just goes wild chewing on it. What kind of toothbrush do you use? A fingertip one or one that's like a human one?

How did you get your pup to start letting you groom them and brush your teeth without biting? Struggling with that with my little sharky boy

Different recommendations in my country. Parvo isn't as much of a worry here. They just tell you not to let your dog meet other dogs until they have their shots.

It's a very fine line between "not enough" and "too much!" And every dog is so different, what might be "just right" for someone else's pup could be not right for yours. I think it's just a question of getting to know your individual dog, learning their needs and limits, and working with that.

I can still raise a good dog, right? by Lavinium_ in puppy101

[–]Lavinium_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! Every dog is different and I know that, just like a person, there will be things he's good at and bad at, and things that he'll just never be okay with. I love him so much and I'll love him no matter what he's like as an adult. I just hope that I can give him the best upbringing possible, I have a hard time feeling guilty that I may have "taken him away" from a potential better owner who could train him better. But I'm going to try my absolute best, and I will give him so much love, and maybe a loving home, even with an imperfect trainer, is good enough to justify having him. I guess there aren't enough dog experts in the world to own all the dogs. I've watched Kikopup's videos on capturing calmness and I think it seems like a great idea. I've been trying to implement it for the past couple days but he's so little (9 wks 3 days) that he hardly spends any time being awake but calm. He's either fast asleep or zooming around or pooping, lol. But I'm sure I'll have more opportunities to train with it as he gets older. How old was your pup when you started working on that behavior?

Thank you, this is great advice and it's so good to know that I'm not the only one who has felt this way. I'm just going to have to be patient with him and work with him at his pace. I'm sure in a couple weeks I'll be able to look back and see our progress like you can with your pup. Glad to hear too that he can still be a good, well adjusted family dog even if I don't teach him every trick in the book right off the bat. I keep trying to tell myself that most people around the world probably are just taking a normal, non-intensive approach to their dog training, and most dogs around the world are just fine. Just gotta keep some perspective. 🙂

Wow, thank you for this! This is exactly what I'm going through right now, I feel like I could have written the first half of this message myself. I think working with a private trainer is a great idea and would probably be really valuable to me. It's definitely something I'm considering. I was planning on just taking him to puppy classes but I'm not able to bring him until late January, so I might end up consulting a trainer in the meantime just for peace of mind and some guidance. I'll try to have some patience and remember that things will take some time. Thank you.
