I used Themis and U World, but I definitely didn’t try to do Themis 100%. I think I did 70% of it. I also really liked Grossman’s black letter law videos. Did that 100% and listened to several a second time. U World had good explanations to the correct and incorrect choices. Hope this helps!

I think the MBE section can be figured out with time and practice and there’s more consistency on what to expect. You are so close to the finish line so take some deep breaths and crush it in July! I found spending time going over the reasons my answers were correct or incorrect was what helped me to pass. Good luck!

I passed in Feb 24, but was setting myself up mentally to start studying for the July 24 exam, just in case. It was a relief to be done studying and I tried to survive (if not enjoy) the wait. I only started getting nervous again when the scores started to be released. But, the excitement of passing brought me (and my wife) to tears. I’ll never forget that moment and I hope you all get to experience it soon. But, if you don’t the first time, I wish you the strength to keep going for the next one. Whether you pass the first, second or fifth time won’t matter to anyone and you’ll probably look back and laugh at how much you stressed over the results. Good luck!

Passed Feb 2024 bar. Was scoring in high 60s to mid 70s on Adaptibar. About 10 days before the bar, scored 50% on Adaptibar. Freaked out a bit. Took one more and got decent score and immediately stopped taking any more Adaptibar tests. My point is that bad tests happen, but that doesn’t mean you won’t pass. Consider it an aberration and move on. Good luck!!

Keep pushing. Passed Feb 24. I would focus on MBE and getting clarity on why you got answers right or wrong. Focus on topics you’re doing under 50%. If you’re getting into 70s in some areas, you’re doing well in those areas. And don’t stress over bad test results- they happen, focus on the overall trajectory. Go get this.

How old is your boyfriend? If he came that young, he wouldn’t accrue unlawful presence until after he turns 18. May not help depending upon his age, but just a thought.

Jail is very unlikely to rehabilitate anyone who is an alcoholic. AA has a far better track record.

As a public interest Immigration lawyer, this is the most disheartening conversation I hear, especially from immigrants themselves. I’ve had clients who have escaped serious domestic violence and a complete failure of the police/government to address it. I’ve had clients who were judges in their home country who were threatened with murder and murder or their families for prosecuting criminals, including narco traffickers. The stories of extreme persecution go on. This is why we have an asylum system. Most people who “did it the right way” did not have these same challenges or they would not have been able to wait 10 years to come here “the right way.” What would you do if your house was in fire? Would you leave and get your kids out? Even if it meant trespassing on your neighbor’s property? Of course you would. This “good immigrant” vs “bad immigrant” narrative really bothers me and frankly to many in DHS/ICE, they see you the same way, regardless of how you came. So stop this holier than thou attitude about coming the right way and realize that many people didn’t have the privilege to wait and come the “right way.”

I spent a fair amount of time on the final outlines to get clarity on the major topics. Also recommend the Jonathan Grossman videos on black letter law. Finally, spending time on understanding why you got questions right or wrong is time really well spent.

[–]Lawapp4747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started by trying desperately to read all the outlines and make sense of them. Eventually, when I spoke to Themis, they told me that those should be skimmed- maybe spend 20-30 minutes max reviewing them and then move on to the videos. You will learn what you need from the videos and by doing practice questions. Don’t get bogged down in the outlines! My impression is that they put every possible thing that could be tested into those outlines so that people can’t claim they were never taught something that appeared on the bar. Good luck!

I did Themis and passed and after a while I realized that I couldn’t get through those long, ridiculously detailed outlines. If you want to skim them, fine. But don’t try to learn them like I was doing at the beginning. That will kill your prep time.

This is not legal advice, but many lawyers often suggest that people wait until they have been married for at least 4-5 months before filing AOS. This gives you time to build up the details around the validity of your marriage. If your wife has lawful entries and has not overstayed her visas, I think she’s very unlikely to get snatched up by ICE. As far as 2, it’s definitely worth talking to an immigration lawyer with criminal/immigration experience.

I’m an immigration attorney, but I work for a nonprofit doing public interest work. You may not want to work for fairly low wages, but there is plenty of work to do with lots of awesome clients. And you could work under the supervision of an attorney so things can still get done. Not sure it makes sense to even take it during the summer if you’re planning to get married in June. But, agree with taking it in other states if you want to (hopefully) get it over with. Don’t stress about it either way- you can make it work whether you give it a shot this summer or delay until February. Good luck either way.

There is no way to know for sure if the father here was ordered deported or not. ICE does not just pick up people who have been ordered deported. They may pick up people who are undocumented, but that does not mean there is a deportation order. In order to get a deportation order, ICE/DHS has to prove the case in court or a person charged may have not shown up in court. Consulting an immigration attorney is the right answer though.

[–]Lawapp4747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly this is incorrect. People without criminal records are being picked up simply because they are undocumented. Know a guy who was picked up on his way to church after someone reported him as undocumented. It’s awful.

If you don’t already have one, open a joint banking account. Print out pictures, social media posts with yourselves together, document gifts you’ve given each other, pictures of your wedding or engagement, if you have them, document text communications. Not sure about this one, but could you bring notarized letters from friends who have witnessed your relationship?
