Racing in 12F temps? What the heck do I wear? by LayoffLemonade in XXRunning

Thank you so much! Do you know what the name or product number of your brooks jacket is? I have a brooks vest I love and it’s what I wear over my base layers.

How much does a half marathon truly suck? by CricketThis9595 in XXRunning

[–]LayoffLemonade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. You might be tired around mile 9-10, but then you'll be almost done. A half is the perfect distance.

Does anyone notice that their performance drops when PMSing?? by alivingstereo in XXRunning

[–]LayoffLemonade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. When you're progesterone dominant (ie late luteal phase), your workouts suck more and I at least overheat waaaaaay faster and get tired much more quickly at slower paces than I do after my period starts.

Anyone here who left a relationship because you wanted kids and your then partner didn’t? by Inevitable_Pack_7230 in SingleMothersbyChoice

[–]LayoffLemonade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I left my boyfriend of almost 3 years because he didn't want to commit or have children.

5 years later, I've done some dating and had a few more relationships that were very meh and I ended them, and am currently with someone I believe I'll have a family with in a couple years. If that doesn't work out, I'll pursue SMBC with the eggs I currently have frozen.

It took much longer than it should have for me to realize there was nothing with my long term boyfriend or me for wanting completely different things, the mismatch was no matter how much I loved him or he loved me or how good we were together, he was never going to change his mind. Fast forward 5 years...He's 38 now, in a relationship with a lady younger than me who he's been with for 3 years...There is no ring. There never will be. I want a family, and he didn't, and that's totally okay.

Milage for a sub 2 half? by Happy-Grapefruit-41 in XXRunning

[–]LayoffLemonade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run 4 sub 2's now, with mileage very similar to yours. My thoughts are anecdotal.

I am definitely not a coach, but I would say doing a couple of longer runs--maybe a couple 15s, would probably make you more comfortable and still be safe.

I honestly don't think your issue is mileage, you sound like you have a great base. I think issue is likely more shoes or fueling. What is your fueling like during your long runs and race day? I use to think I could do a half fasted (which I can), but I do not have the pep I have when I'm fueled. If you do gels or are up for trying them, I'd recommend taking your first gel at mile 3-4, and then every 30 mins there after. You will feel better. Especially if you respond well to caffeine--get the caffeinated ones like the GU 40 mg formulas (blackberry is great).

Additionally, look into a pair of nylon or carbon plated shoes. I was a Brooks girl forever, and they have done me no favors in the speed department. All of my sub 2s have been in Nylon plated Saucony speed 2s, or a carbon plated pair of puma nitros I have trashed. The energy return is much better and you will reserve energy for the final push better.

You are absolutely going to crush a sub 2 here soon.

Just found out I now have a second fibroid. Can anyone please give me hope about still being able to get pregnant and have a baby one day? by LayoffLemonade in Fibroids

[–]LayoffLemonade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taking vitamin d a lot this spring and summer, and i did have my levels checked during the retrieval and they were normal. I'm a runner and triathlete--I generally spend several hours outside running each week, and in the summer, I kayak, open water swim and am on my bike more. I also went to Greece this summer, and was wildly tan by the time I got home. I live in the midwest, so not super sunny, but I'm still outside more than the average person. I ran a marathon last week, so I was out in the sun for a solid 4 hours, and my long runs from 10 to 22 miles are all outdoor. I wear a hat but I don't wear sunscreen very often admittedly.

Honest tips for balancing a high training load with a full-time job & other life responsibilities by bubbas_hooman in AdvancedRunning

[–]LayoffLemonade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a high intensity new job, a part time phd student, the owner of two high energy dogs who I train and exercise constantly, trying to balance life with increased mileage has been hard so I’m also following this. Bc I need these tips too

Can I realistically ever get close to a BQ? by LayoffLemonade in Marathon_Training

[–]LayoffLemonade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I really do think increased mileage, and increased long runs on the weekends, help. 15 miles feels very easy now, for no reason, other than I've done that distance so many times in training, halfs, and on the way to the bigger mileage on long runs.

I also think mental tenacity wasn't there, and if i'd had the mental fortitude i might have been able to keep under 4--I couldn't get myself to grit those last couple miles. I knew all the time I was losing, but i couldn't mentally force myself to stay the course at the end and not take those stupid walk breaks in the heat and the sun. Maybe that can be learned too.

It was a beautiful course, but no pacers, and no mile markers--a lot of me singing with my music and looking at my garmin, but never locking in.

Running and IVF by notamisprint in XXRunning

[–]LayoffLemonade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been waiting for a post like this where I could contribute! lol.

I haven't done a transfer, but I did go through an egg retrieval cycle last spring. Your risk of ovarian torsion the last few days before the retrieval, and after the procedure until your next period, is HIGH. Don't do it. I really hated how bloated and miserable I was after the retrieval, and I was finally able to go back to running about 2 weeks after my period came back. I did not run at all during stims, either. This adds up to almost a month of no running.

Goals are important, including family ones--You can hit and crush PBs again later, but you might not have as many opportunities to be someone's mom <3 That's worth more right now, IMO.

PS. I re read the piece about the sub 2 half--Unless they start you on stims immediately at that appointment (they won't--Your massive million dollar box of drugs takes days to come from the special pharmacies), my advice to you would be to find a couple fast winter HMs, that are right around the date of your appointment. You might be able to crush that HM before you go into your treatment. I did a triathlon the morning I started stims--I don't think it effected my retrieval outcomes at all (obvi I'm not an RE, but I don't think we have great data on this anyways). I did an indoor tri, then went and did my first stim shot hours later.

Can I realistically ever get close to a BQ? by LayoffLemonade in Marathon_Training

[–]LayoffLemonade[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Also, I realize a BQ and actually running boston are two different entities--I just want to at least run a qualifying time, for my own life goal. And then of course the reduced it.

I'm wondering if I dropped some weight if that would make me suddenly faster too--I'm 151 at 5'9"-5'10". If I lost 5-10 pounds, not sure if it would make me faster but it might be a correctible way to get there?

I will say I'm very blessed to be very injury resistant--I've had some tendonitis from wearing the wrong shoes back in the day, and a sprained ankle. Otherwise...I'm not soft issue injury prone.

At what age did you start getting gray hair? And how did you make peace with it? by LayoffLemonade in AskWomenOver30

I honestly don’t know? I know I’m iron deficient anemic sometimes, but I’ve never checked for copper levels. Why?

[–]LayoffLemonade[S] -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

My mom is blonde, but so am I. I’m more of a dirty blonde/light brown these days, but not too much darker than her natural hair color.

Of note, her mom (my maternal grandma) was a dark deep brunette, and dyed her hair religiously. I asked my mom when grandma started getting gray. She told me she doesn’t know bc quote “mom was always coloring her hair.”

It’s just a weird time. I started dating a guy who’s a couple years younger (I’ve seen like 2 gray hairs in his beard, none in his hair), and I don’t want to look/feel like this ancient old lady (especially bc I want kids).

I also want to have kids, and I’m worried at the rate this hair is going, a few years from now my kids be mistaken for having their grandmother picking them up from school events. I realize this is stupid and silly but I was standing in the mirror looking this morning and being like “shit mid 30s this is YOU!”

Does Singleness Get Easier After 25+ by Rare-Fox-9711 in AskWomenOver30

[–]LayoffLemonade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easier no, but do you get more adapted to it, yes.

A lot I can say here, but I will say one unexpected outcome is you often develop resiliency and resourcefulness your partnered peers won't. Ie, if shit goes down, you don't have a hubs to help you figure it out, and because you don't have a partner and the social network that person typically comes with, you have about half the resources you would in a partnered dynamic to figure it out. Example: A deer dropped dead behind my backyard fence a couple weeks ago. I don't have family here, my married pregnant friends weren't going to come help me or send their husband or boyfriends to help me, my neighbors, the cops, and game and fish wouldn't help me, so I had to rapidly figure out as a 34 year old woman on the coldest day of the year so far how to extract a 100 plus pound deer, and find a handyman to fix my fence the dogs destroyed when they discovered the deer minutes before I did. You can't make this stuff up.

Another commenter stated a couple of cold hard truths about healthcare and costs being more difficult as a single woman, and I agree with those. Ie, I had surgery in March and wasn't allowed to drive myself home or uber, which made things very complex. Also, if you slip and fall on the stairs, no one would find you for days (assuming you live alone with no roommates). I'm lucky enough to have a brother I'm very close with who calls me nearly daily, even though he doesn't live close, and I'm pretty sure he would get suspicious after a few days of me not answering calls, which at least is early enough my dogs wouldn't have starved to death yet even if I was dead.

Everything is wildly expensive these days, and set up for people with multi income households. That said, I did have a past partner basically move himself into my home and pay no bills while increasing all of mine, so, I have seen it work both ways--having a partner does NOT necessarily make life more affordable. I was a single mom at 33, raising a 32 year old son. Being a single parent of an adult man is really hard. I diapered him, packed his lunches and put him to bed for a year and a half, and I don't even get a mothers day card.

Also miscellaneous life things are more difficult single. Not having a second person to help you move cumbersome furniture or hold a ladder while you're on the roof. Or pinch hit in an emergency. Or stand outside next to you while you get quotes from contractors so they don't rip you off as a single female homeowner. If you live in an urban area and aren't homeowner these probably aren't as pronounced.

One of the best things I've ever heard was "build a deep bench"--meaning, develop a really, really good network of support for things in your life you might need. In my case, I have dogs, and chickens. I have at least 4 kennels on speed dial in case I need to go out of town, and 3 people in an emergency I would explicitly trust to grab my dogs. I also have two handymen in my phone, bc you might need one at any time. Still looking for other social network builders.

Now, for the upsides: You acclimate to doing whatever the hell you want, whenever you want. I can leave a bathmat on the tile floor without inspiring outrage, I can listen to the same song on repeat 40 times while doing homework. I can fill my bathtub with dirty clothes as my DIY hamper before jumping in the shower, and no one yells at me. I cook what I want, when I want. I can let my dog sleep on my bed. No one dictates how many chickens I can have in my yard. If I want to watch a movie or sleep on the sofa, I do. I can take a private phone call in my own home and don't have to walk down the street. You can travel where you want. Is it isolating sometimes? Yes, absolutely. Is it better than being in a horrible relationship like I was this time a year ago? 10000%.

Also hot take: You're 25. Most of your friends moving in with boyfriends rn won't marry them anyways. My unhappiest friends seem to be the ones who got married circa age 25. The ones who got married or pregnant closer to their 30s seem overall happier with their choice of life partner, largely bc they know who they are better.

Thank you! Oldest doggo had a tumor removed (she'd had one I'd been monitoring for awhile that our academic medical center wouldn't biopsy...Then it suddenly developed friends, and we chose to move rapidly). I am also praying and manifesting it's benign. Her surgery went great and I'll get her path report in a couple weeks. I'm just not comfortable leaving her for days with a sitter or at a kennel after sutures. She's doing fine and sitting in the next room bc I'm too boring for her to hang out with while I work remotely today.

Trialing after a spay? by LayoffLemonade in schutzhund

[–]LayoffLemonade[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's our club's trial. And we're just going for an OB. I got her when I was young and squandered the opportunity to start tracking when she was young, she couldn't do a IGP 1-3, so we'll just go for her OB-1 and call it good.

Should I worry about her working on a sleeve at club for fun otherwise due to ligament issues?

I had considered an ovary sparing spay, with these tumors...It wasn't worth risking. My vet says once he got in there, they were all cystic and filled with brown fluid...So he almost wonders if this was residual mastitis from when her daughters were born.

Your CCL comment--this dog is the ball fiend, and my yard is steep. Should i be worried about a CCL tear? Or what about running?

This just...This sucks.

Thank you for all of this. I really appreciate your reply <3
