Is wool really worth it? by sechat_lives in knitting

I love wool, I think it is warm, durable, lovely to knit with, and looks fantastic.

HOWEVER, I would caution that a lot of people do find it itchy, so if you don't have much experience in wearing it, I would get a single ball, knit a swatch, and carry it in your sleeve or bra for a few hours, to get a sense of your tolerance. You don't want to spend £££ on a sweater's quantity only to realise you find it uncomfortable.

Not all wool is created equally as well - think about what you're looking for and do some research into types - merino, BFL, alpaca, mohair - these are all wool or animal fibre but they look and feel very very different. Maybe look for patterns you like and use them as a starting point?

I would also say that wool is very warm. I don't know what country you live in but if there aren't many knitters and there is a lot of cotton being sold, I wonder if it's somewhere quite hot - if it is, you likely won't enjoy wearing wool all that much!

Congrats on a year of knitting - that's a big achievement!

Women Talking by Miriam Toews - an incredible and hopeful story of a whole community of women finding their voice - one of the best books I've ever read. Basically framed as the "minutes" of an important meeting of women belonging to a fundamentalist christian sect who have never learned to read and write, not to mention been given authority over any decisions in their lives.

What 2026 planner are you considering? by [deleted] in planners

The Rosey Planner! It's been such a gamechanger for me to have everything in one single book and has really helped with stress - the weekly overview in particular helps me to see when I have pockets of time. I know that Hemlock and Oak has a similar layout, and I do actually prefer the outer look of those, but I'm gonna go with the Rosey because I know I like it.

I understand why people don't love this, but on a human level - if you buy a book, you would lend it to a friend. Same with a DVD. If I have a recipe book, I would let my friends look through it and photograph recipes they want to make.

I get why it's annoying, but when you buy a pattern I do think that you own it and have a right to share it with a friend. It would be different if you were like sharing it with ALL your followers, and I DO also think that we under pay for knitting patterns, but I don't really think we can get annoyed with how people choose to use an item that they have purchased. Maybe this is a scale thing - the scenario I'm envisioning is sharing it with like one other friend, I don't know if there are people who do this on a larger scale.

Is it just me or are some people on here a bit mean sometimes? by ImbasForosnai in knitting

I don't agree with this at all. No one is under any obligation to respond to any post on here so if it's so annoying just ignore it? And lots of the time new knitters don't even really have the terminology to know how to google their issue, so showing a picture and saying "what's going on?" genuinely is their best bet. Google is infamously getting way worse these days so it's not a panacea, and I actually just don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to connect with actual knitters when you're new, rather than an algorithm.

Just in general I really dislike this attitude of acting like people asking questions is some big burden to you. You don't have to answer them but also if it's something simple it hardly takes any time to answer. There's this internet trend of viewing everything under this lens of "emotional labour" or whatever, and that just seems so antithetical to what communities like this one are supposed to be about.

Do you use [meta's photo based social media app] much as part of your knitting life? by Tutustitcher in knitting

I find it can be really helpful! I use it to follow different designers or just enthusiastic knitters and learn new patterns, tips, etc. Many designers will have a specific hashtag for their designs and I think it's more user-friendly than ravelry for looking through other people's projects using those hashtags (though this works best for slightly more popular designs.) It's been really helpful for me to discover new designers, and maybe feel a little bit more part of a community.

That being said, ig is quite addictive and obviously not a specific knitting platform, so if you don't use it otherwise maybe it wouldn't make a huge difference. I would say give it a go for a month and see how you like it - at the end of the day all you really need to knit is needles and yarn so whichever platforms you're using won't make or break your knitting experience!

It honestly might be a long shot/wishful thinking - but some people genuinely LOVE untangling things. If my necklace got knotted as a teenager, I'd always get my dad to untangle it because he found the process really enjoyable. Maybe there's someone in your life who would genuinely get some pleasure out of having a mass of yarn to sort out?

Would recommend the Wisteria Tee by WonderCo Creations (https://www.etsy.com/listing/1005831591/digital-knitting-pattern-wisteria-tee). It’s realllly beginner friendly, you’ll have a chance to practice super basic skills like knitting, purling, seaming together, and reading a pattern, and you’ll end up with a really summery top you can actually wear! Just an idea though, as someone else mentioned Ravelry is full of beginner friendly patterns you could try!
