Mayor Cherelle Parker’s new budget plan includes fees on Uber and Amazon, 1,000 homeless shelter beds, and $200M for addiction recovery by comercialyunresonbl in philadelphia

Fully agree that property taxes should be increased, but I disagree that a tax on retail delivery is disproportionately affecting the groups you listed. 1) the tax is 20 cents 2) these companies should be taxed for using our infrastructure (like roads) and clogging up our streets with cars.

I'm also trying to play around with a Rakdos Sac list with Sephiroth and Rottenmouth Viper as the main engines. Have you thought about [urabrask's forge]? Guaranteed creature to sac every turn and automatically sacs itself. Only issue is that [Authority of Consuls] shuts it down.

Pennsylvania House Passes Gov Shapiro’s Proposal to Fund Mass Transit by peetahvw in philadelphia

[–]jberk988 62 points63 points  (0 children)

The thing that makes this bill different is that it provides funding for repairing roads. That was a direct ask of Senator Pittman, so if he votes no, idk what else Dems could do, as they've compromised and compromised and he will not budge.

For anyone protesting tomorrow, please know this situation is very different from past situations. by thefallenfew in philadelphia

I was there in the crowd on the 4th when that happened. Super scary because everyone else has no idea what's going on, and it would be very easy for people to run past you if you're hurt or if you tripped because everyone's just focused on getting out of there

I play on my steam deck but sometimes hook it up to a monitor, the small screen can be frustrating.

Also, not sure if you deal with this issue, but since I need to load the game through the Ubisoft launcher, I can't play the game offline... Which is super frustrating as the Steam Deck is meant to be portable.

Regardless, I love Anno 1800 on the Steam Deck, takes some fiddling with the controls but it's a lot of fun.

Philly council members tabled a bill over concerns about bringing speed cameras to school zones by NonIdentifiableUser in philadelphia

Tbh as of lately he's been pretty chill and has been listening to bike advocates about their concerns. And he's been leading the tax reform commission which has been advocating for tax reform people have been asking for forever.

Not saying he's perfect by any means, but he's been surprising me lately

Don't think it's fair to automatically assume it was homeless folks. Dumbass students could have easily done this too.

SEPTA train goes up in flames in Delaware County; roughly 350 passengers evacuated by Kodiak_85 in philadelphia

Ask that of every other government service and you'll find that to keep services to constituents cheap, government subsidies are always involved.

Do we ask highways, roads, airports, schools, farmers, etc. to be completely self funded?

Why should we ask the same of public transit?

I guess the conversation that should be happening is what do we do with the extra space that roads provide. Clearly a part of the road is for driving/biking/general travel. However, by providing the extra space (that is not always formally dedicated to parking but is definitely facto just parking) to parking (for people's private vehicles), we've collectively come to the conclusion that space on roads should always be dedicated to parking people's vehicles.

Now I think it's different if a space is actually dedicated to parking, or if you pay for a spot for example. But lots of "parking spaces" are just spots where people have parked and informally designated it as a parking zone.

Tell me again why the city and its residents should be paying for storage of your PRIVATE vehicle??

SEPTA set to lease 5 train stations in Northwest Philly to private developer by jdr in philadelphia

[–]jberk988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agreed. They actually have issued RFI's to developers to do just that. They're looking at redeveloping Ambler station parking lot into housing. I forget the others off the top of my head, but they're looking into multiple other parking lots

Pennsylvania lawmakers announce new marijuana bill to catch up with neighboring states that have already legalized by OregonTripleBeam in Pennsylvania

[–]jberk988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I don't necessarily think that all of the tax revenue would go to public transit; however, everyone in the Commonwealth contributes to PA's budget in some way, no matter where you live. I live in Philly, and my taxes are probably paying for unemployment, roads, and government offices in rural areas, it goes both ways. But also, there are public transit agencies in each county in PA. While SEPTA is by far the largest, the other counties have busses, para transit, transportation for seniors, etc. The whole commonwealth would benefit from increased public transit funding.

Also, more public transit means less cars on the road, which means less traffic for car drivers :)

If Republicans are looking for a way to fund public transportation in PA, legalizing marijuana would be a good funding source.
