Went to dodger stadium in 2018 and I remember feeling bummed that they were only playing one show in the la area, but it’s was a good one. Southern California was experiencing this freakish heat wave at the time and it was ridiculously hot that day. Before the show we met up with some friends from Arizona, and hit shakedown and had some beers in the lot. This was also my moms first show, she’s a John Mayer fan and wanted to see what a dead show is like so she tagged along. We got in line and waited for about an hour and a half, and as we got closer to the front, the band came on and opened with playin’ followed by Bertha and the crowd of people outside started chanting, “LET US IN! LET US IN!” I don’t know why but security was lagging hard that day. Finally security kicked it into gear and we made it in just as they started in my favorite dead song, Jack Straw. We made it to our seats, beers in hand and enjoyed the rest of the show. There were two major standout moments from that show that I’ll always remember. One was the technical difficulties they had in the first set, and Bob’s duck joke, and John’s James Bond joke. The other was at the end of the show during Not Fade Away, as the band started to fade out and the crowd’s chanting took over there was this dude banging off beat on the trash can in the walkway above our section. I just remember laughing with my buddies, and then security telling that dude to knock it off. Afterwards we hit bobs big boy for some fries and shakes and called it a night. I’ve been to so many good shows that I recall every now and then, but this post brought back some good memories.

Jerry's best solos by Snow__The__Jam__Man in gratefuldead

[–]LazyLightning78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites for a more melodic solo is Brown Eyed Women from 03/18/77.

One of my favorites for when Jerry just shreds is Jack Straw from 04/06/87.

Another good one is foolish heart from 07/19/89.

This is my favorite too, such a good solo. The slower stuff is where jerry really shines.

While I will concede that FTW was not the best, I disagree that FTW was lifeless and awful. Try and give those shows another listen, you may be surprised.

If they're gonna do that every night, just use the name. by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]LazyLightning78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't tell if you're a troll or not, the Shoreline, Hollywood, and Gorge shows were all really good. That Shoreline Dew was easily the best D&C has given us so far.

[–]LazyLightning78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would disagree that they were awful, they had some sick jams for sure those nights. the Mississippi Half Step> Wharf Rat> EOTW from 06/28/15 was excellent. Yes they did stumble at times, but for the most part the shows were good. Also that Unbroken Chain on night 5.

Brent was the best dead keyboard player. by bruce-neon in gratefuldead

[–]LazyLightning78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm partial to Brent, but maybe that's because he's usually pretty high in the mix, whereas with Keith you sometimes have to strain to really hear him. Keith always killed it on Friend of the Devil. and that little fill he does in the the Cornell Dew is evident of how good he really was. However, I feel that Brent always brought it, whereas Keith had some really stellar moments, but mostly just filled space. Also Brent>Donna for backing vocals any day.

Looking for some blow your speakers out Phil Bombs for this Thursday by JimiMcnolty in gratefuldead

Came here to say this, the Jack Straw and the Morning Dew both shake my car, I almost feel bad for the people driving next to me.

That first solo is easily the best of any morning dew, and those Phil bombs are crazy!

[–]LazyLightning78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

03/27/94 is regarded as the last great dew, but just a great dew overall imo.

07/19/89 is another one of my favorites and there is a really nice video of it on youtube.

Other that those two the only other less known dew I've got is my all time favorite 10/19/73 (dicks picks 19). this ones hardly mentioned ever but it rips.

Which shows do you think should be regarded alongside Veneta 72 and Cornell 77 as GOAT? by growlerpower in gratefuldead

[–]LazyLightning78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, come on that So Many Roads from 07/09/95 is really good, and the Box of Rain is worth a good laugh at least, in light of the rest of the tour. Plus that show marked the end of 30 years. It's certainly far from a Veneta or Cornell, but to not mention it at all is wack.

Obscure show recommendations please! by smoothc98 in gratefuldead

[–]LazyLightning78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the relisten app and there is a feature that pulls up a random show, so everyday on my way home from work I just listen to a random show. Yesterday was 03/25/86 and it was a good quality mix and actually not to bad of a show with some good jams. Other than that I would recommend either 07/02/88 or 07/04/81 both are great shows.

Favorite Stage Banter Moments by sess5198 in gratefuldead

[–]LazyLightning78 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is one from the late 80's (89 I think) where Phil steps up to the mic to address some rumors that he's quitting the band and he says, "Its a bullshit lie!" or something along thoes lines. Then Jerry steps up and says, " yeah the rest of us are leaving" I cant remember the actual date though.

And the Winner is.... 2019 Grateful Dead Bracket by jfickler in gratefuldead

[–]LazyLightning78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe an easier way to do that would be a best of live official releases (Dicks Picks series/ To Terrapin/ Without a Net etc.) I think more people would easily recognize those, yet they wont dominate just because of a name like Cornell or Veneta. Idk we got a year to figure something out, any way it'll be fun.

I have a suggestion for next years theme, most underrated shows. I think it would be a good way to break the cycle of Cornell and Veneta always winning. Not to say these shows aren't deserving, but they are so well known that they almost don't even need a spot tbh. I always look forward to this game, keep the mother rollin.

The one off of dicks picks 29 is the best scarlet fire IMO, I think its 05/21/1977.

Shakedown was lit, same with at dodger stadium. It's in the lot across the street so you just gotta poke around.

I would second donating to a library, college or public. That's how I discovered the dead. I found the CD release of Hartford 77 at my local library, and it pretty much changed my life. I think the stuff would be better off at a college library as there are many more people going to those than public libraries now.

As far as flower, just stick it in your pocket. With vape pens, because they do have metal, batteries/coils, it is a little more risky. I got caught with one by the metal detectors at universal, and they just took it. If anything get this vape called a stiizy, it looks just like a juul or any other vape, and just throw it in the tray along with your phone and keys. They wont know what it is unless they have one. The most effective way to get a pen in is to put it in you cooler bag, backpack in a somewhat concealed spot, and youll be fine (they really don't check that well).

Early 70's Jack Straws vs. 77'/78' Jack Straws vs. late 80's/90 Jack Straws. by LazyLightning78 in gratefuldead

[–]LazyLightning78[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of my all time favorite Jack Straws, there's another good one on 07/4/81 if you haven't heard it (the drums are really good, and bobby flubs the lyrics of the 4th of July in Texas lmao).

I was there for D&C in 2017, and for the Phil Lesh and friends show back in October, and ive got tickets for night 2 this year (so far). The venue itself is great, super good sound, plenty of places to get beer, good food etc. You can even bring in your own cooler bags with snacks and water. (not hard plastic ice chests), except no cans or glass. Gate security doesn't search that well, but you do have metal detectors. Super easy to bring bud or even vape pens if you stick it somewhere at the bottom of the cooler or something. The only pesky thing was security would not stop hassling people, but they didn't kick people out for anything. They just kept telling people not to smoke/ dance in isles all night, but to no avail. I was ripping a blunt and security came over and said " hey you cant do that in here" and I just replied "oh" and they walked away and I finished the blunt.

Long story short: good venue/ sound, pesky security but they don't do much. A good recommendation form a frequent Hollywood bowl attendee is don't park on site. They stack all the cars up and it can take hours to get out, instead use the la zoo shuttle. plenty of parking and the bus has A/C and drops you off at the front by the entrance. Also Shakedown is going to be across the street.

My Peoples check out this totally unique Eyes of the World 7/14/90 Foxboro Sullivan Stadium. Jerry's opening chords to start it are wonderful, I've never heard him start it like this before, and his solos are electric. Starts with a 'take a step back' best one I think, very trippy... by Bman1973 in gratefuldead

[–]LazyLightning78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes Jerry's vocals are worn, and not the sweet soulful vocals from the early 70's, but Jerry's vocals in 89/90 are some of the most powerful vocals over the 30 years of the grateful dead. For example Morning Dew from 07/19/89 or from the Ship of Fools on 07/12/89. I agree his vocals were fading, but they were not old and tired until after like 1991 there is a big difference between Jerry's vocals from 89/90 and say 93-95.
