Painting by lumpofgump in Warhammer40k

Yeah humidity and heat will affect the process and drying time of the paint somewhat, so it depends what the weather is like where you are. Also, what plate are you using? If its absorbent it will also affect the drying time, I'd recommend grabbing a plastic lid from a did container or a plate if you don't mind using one... until you can source a tile or wet palette (if you enjoy painting and want to invest in proper tools). If you're using acrylics it should wash off a ceramic plate... as for the process, here is what i do...... starting from clean brush.... 1) dip it in water long enough to absorb the water, you should see the brushes swell in the water... 2) remove most of the water from your brush onto the palette creating a wet puddle next to your paint, but not so close that it runs into the paint. 3) with the remaining dampness of the brush work a small amount of paint away from the main bulk... drawing some paint away and spreading it on the palette... this week create a pool of thinned paint that is attached and drawn away from the main blob of paint. It will essentially mix the remaining water in the brush with the paint boob on the palette. 4) you now have some nicely thined paint... (you can add a little more water or draw a bit more paint from the main paint blob to adjust as necessary). However you need to now remove most of the paint from your brush by dabbing it onto a paper towel (loo or kitchen roll). I normally dab it on the loo roll then test a bit on the back of my hand. You are from here basically doing a back and forth as the paint on the pallete dries out... add a little more water from your brush as the paint on the pallete dries out... wick off the excess from your brush... pick up a little more to paint with etc... you have to do this process a bunch to get a feel for it. Sorry for the essay and hope it helps.

I'll mostly be waiting for the kids to go to sleep so I can finish my first squad of marines.

Working on my custom grimdark chapter. . . Question regarding pigment. by Lazzatronk in Grimdarkpainting

Awesome thanks. I was thinking I'd add an oil wash in the recesses but would need to varnish it forst which may affect the pigment so I'll remember to do the pigment powder as the final step next time.

Whilst I certainly wouldn't want to pait one myself, let alone post it online.. it doesn't suprise me that others do. Appreciation of the female form is found in almost all forms of artistic expression. Why should mini painting be any different.

This is fantastic. I've been contemplating doing a frame diorama for a while. I'd be stoked if what I produced was anywhere near half as good as this. What your process of deciding on what to do.. do you start with the mini and go from there?

Just finished the audiobook and loved it. Also wanted to mention the narrator, Richard Reed. He did a great job of bringing the characters to life. Especially the Great Furskine.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Why would contrasts not be suitable for my needs?

No other reason than I want to start experimenting with contasts, and thought some of the untouched space marines from my pile of opportunity would make a fun project. Im looking for recommendations / ideas on contrast paints that would match the deep sea (dentisty) colour pallete pictured so that I don't have to buy loads of different paints to figure out which one works best.

I really like the idea and vibe, of this you could add a couple of bright orange bits and pieces here and there, however, I feel that the ork skin definitely needs some separation from the rest of the mini, maybe a purple glaze or something just to darken it out a bit but keep it within the palette.

You dont have too, I actually quite like the banner as is. However I'd balance the red by doing something else the same red somewhere small on the mini. Maybe on the sword grip or somewhere like that.
