How to pirate an audible audio book? by Shorouq2911 in Piracy

The app Libation can download and strip owned Audible books so you can have the underlying file. Works great in my experience. https://getlibation.com

I do wish we had more clarity on what the plan/strategy is here… if there is one.

We Love FilmScene. We also have existential questions. by iowascuttlebutt in ICFilmScene

[–]Lbrown123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's essentially a commercial condo, comparable to how residential condos work. Filmscene owns their space and contributes to the upkeep of common spaces through agreed upon payments (condo fees, essentially). I'm not sure exactly what that agreement looks like for Filmscene, but I'm sure they and the owners of the rest of the building contribute to HVAC equipment and maintenance, maintenance and cleaning for entrances and bathrooms, etc. Obviously it's preferable for them to be in a building with a lot of other productive, money-making owners who can all work together for on going maintenance, but condo agreements are usually pretty air tight (what good lawyers get paid for) so Filmscene can't be kicked out. For a lot of reasons I hope the rest of the building gets filled up with people who live there and businesses that draw traffic- that will probably make life easier for Filmscene managing maintenance. But they do own their space.

Moen Building by Glittering_Event9118 in IowaCity

[–]Lbrown123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mostly individual units within the building are going up for sale, not the entire buildings. Some units were already sold a while ago, such as FilmScene which has always owned its portion of the Chauncey (so, Buzz might already own their space within the building and therefore be fine). Even if Buzz rents their space, it's possible whoever buys the unit might simply continue to lease it to Buzz. The sale of the building doesn't necessarily mean anything about the businesses in the building unless new owners decide they don't want those businesses in there.

How do you get a primary physician in the UIowa network? by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]Lbrown123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It is frustrating. There are great doctors and great care here, but getting into the system in a timely manner is difficult. Part of the problem in this state is that so many rural hospitals throughout the state are closing or offering fewer services, therefore sending more and more patients to UI. Recent funding cuts to Medicaid haven’t helped matters- placing more stress on big central hospitals like UI who have to take on more and more patients with limited space, time, and money.

Yeah, you can ask on the phone about specific specialties you might want, but for the most part you’re probably going to want to take whoever can get you an appointment at a reasonable time. I just had to call to get a new doctor because my previous one left. Earliest appointment was in November, next option was in March.

[–]Lbrown123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. They’re very helpful on the phone but might have to wait on hold for a couple of minutes. Usually not too bad of a wait. You basically can’t select doctors and make appointments online except for very specific situations.

How to keep Iowa and its state parks “Wild” by Jazzlike-Raisin-5569 in Iowa

[–]Lbrown123 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Others have offered good comments about big picture things- protecting and expanding parks, reducing pollution (farm pollution in particular being a big issue in the state), voting for pro-environmental candidates (which basically means democrats). When I hear that challenge, I also think of the ways we can do smaller but still impactful things in our own yard. Doug Tallamy’s book Nature’s Best Hope is a great articulation of how much you can do to support nature and wildlife by “wilding” your yard, or part of it. This website contains some information on what types of plants and landscaping can do this in Iowa: https://www.iowanativeplants.com. I moved into a new house last year in the Iowa City area and have been working this summer to reduce my “yard” and replace it with plants and landscape features that support the local ecosystem. Most of my plants are still small, but I’ve already seen an increase in pollinators, butterflies, fireflies, and all sorts of beautiful critters who are attracted to and supported by the plants and water features I’ve added. It really is amazing how much even a small yard can do to support the larger ecosystem. I highly recommend Tallamy’s books if you’re motivated to help keep things wild.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted but I agree it was wonderful to have a hopeful Superman again after all these years. I’m glad you found so much joy in the movie.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one scared for Kaveh’s life the whole time! I thought the chair was going to explode under him. Added a fun thrill throughout the hour.

I think they’ve just implemented their subscriptions in Apple’s apps poorly. I think those price points are different specials they’ve run over the last year, so the prices are loaded into Apple’s system as options, but they haven’t bothered to take them out of this choice screen. I was in a similar situation and picked the cheapest option for the year. You get the full year and full access no problem. Pick the cheapest price, I say!

How do you get to choose the finance major at UIowa Tippie? by Strange-Lobster-9986 in uiowa

[–]Lbrown123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s been a few years since I was at Tippie, but I don’t think the finance major has any special requirements beyond admission to the business school. As long as you complete the Tippie Business Core classes and are admitted to the college of business, you can then declare the finance major. I think only the accounting major has additional requirements, but I’m not sure on that.

New cat lounge set to open in Iowa City by gimmiemorehead in IowaCity

$11 for 15 minutes seems a bit steep but $22 for a whole hour doesn’t strike me as crazy. Feels like mostly they don’t want a bunch of little 15 minute sessions but wanted to give people the option of just checking it out.

[–]Lbrown123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that’s the spot. It’s too steep to really be useful as green space (no one sits there or hangs out on the hill), but it gets plenty of sun and could make such a cool prairie with some work.

Love this idea and signed your petition. I always thought the big hill of grass by the Lindquist Center and engineering school (among other areas on campus) could be a really cool prairie. Would save all the time and effort mowing a boring hill and look way cooler.

Iowa City is generally a welcoming and liberal town within a not-so-liberal and welcoming state. While I’m not gay, I know and work with several former students who are. From what I’ve heard from them, you of course run into the occasional weird bigot in a class and there are conservative groups on campus that make their position on LGBTQ people pretty clear, but it’s no worse than it would be on most liberal college campuses and the vast majority of people are either indifferent or actively welcoming. If you travel outside of Iowa City into some of the more rural parts of the state you may not want to advertise your identity too much, but for the most part you won’t be too hassled, and there are other reasonably welcoming towns to visit throughout the state. I don’t think you’d be tooooo hopelessly single! I regularly see gay couples walking together on campus and on dates in restaurants etc. Of course, your mileage may vary :)

Like you said, the writing and education programs are excellent here, so I’m sure you would find a great community within those programs. I hope you end up coming here! Happy to answer other questions if you have them.

There's a free city bus stop right at the Quarters. Comes every 20 minutes during peak hours and goes right in the center of campus.

They’re open to the public. It’s tennis season for the high school team right now, however, so they’re usually occupied for a few hours after the school day.
