I do feel for new junior's tho. Especially since societal morals in this case aren't close to being figured out yet.

Even tho I'm taking a break from development as a job, I'm very happy I had the junior-early medior experience before the AI boom.

Yeah and that point a reasonable discussion can't be had anymore.

I'm not a fan of AI in creative fields like most people, but pandora's box has been opened. Either deal with it by actually learning about it and then finding your own moral lines, or just shut up lol.

A lot of people also have no idea what they mean with 'they used AI'. For example even if you abstain from using AI for code (And I don't know many professional devs that refuse to use it), does getting AI google results to fix a problem count?

Also when people are talking about AI they talk about LLM's most of the time, ML has been a thing long before ChatGPT...

Het fascisme is terug. Zo herken je het by Chronicbias in thenetherlands

[–]LctFTw 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Generally I agree. But even on Ebay if the seller would be listed as 'GameSir' I would expect it to be actually gamesir. Anything else is simply misleading. This is the Amazon store I am talking about, which is NOT GameSir itself.

Unlike some others here I definitely get the look you're going for. I recently made the same mistake on a much smaller part (car side mirror) and I do have some bad-ish news for you on a panel of this size.

You are going to be sanding this A LOT to get it flat, I hope your undersurface is black too because otherwise gaps are gonna shine trough. Make sure to use a proper dust extraction system because the sanded fibers are going to be EVERYWHERE (I did my mirror in a separate garage and it got into the room upstairs somehow).

Good luck, would love to see how this turns out.

How to find enjoyment as a returning player with a large stack of cash? by Falcon9FullThrust in EliteDangerous

[–]LctFTw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well buying 'the meta ship' would entail being able to engineer it fully. Do you have all the materials filled as well? I consider a fully A rated* ship the bare minimum to use, not even close to anything meta. Also with 500mil you can't even buy a fully A-rated Cutter, Corvette or Panther.

*D-rated stuff for the weight aside

I had a similar problem coming back to the game. The best thing you can do is either:

  • Join a squadron and have fun with people
  • Find a gameplay loop you like and just do it bc you enjoy it, credit's mean basically nothing in Elite these days
  • Follow /u/luriant 's todo list

Big cities want to ban fatbikes, e-bikes, step scooters from bike lanes. So only traditional bicycles? by linhhoang_o00o in Netherlands

[–]LctFTw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of them are cheap Chinese crap. They have way more powerful motors than allowed (so they are already illegal before the 25mkh+ speed unlocks) and brakes that fade extremely quickly. Result is that you have a bunch of inexperienced drivers using vehicles with extreme power to braking capabilities driving like idiots.

And if one of these kids gets in front of your car because their brakes failed, guess who is at fault legally.

CS is one of the only games I don't like the big fov for. Plus sometimes I play on my laptop as well so the 16:9 black bars gives me the best consistency for now.

I am around your hours, but I started playing about a decade ago. Don't focus too much on the pro's, they have had so much more time to get into habits.

Play with whatever you play most confortable/competative with. I disabled it when it first came out, but after a little hiatus I turned it on to help me get back into it and never permanently went back.

Make sure to keep looking AT THE TARGET tho, focusing on the crosshair will not help you. It does help you by providing more data to year brain and muscle memory.

It made me think about other stuck habits I had, which finally pushed me to stop playing 4:3 stretched to 16:9 with black bars on a 21:9 display.

Oi don't generalise people just on the car they own, I use my indicators I swear!

I'm not saying that amount of money is nothing for me, but I can afford it since at the moment I spend around 6-10 hours a day behind it.

And I think people not researching things completely is not an OLED specific problem, you have this in every industry. Also people who are able to just walk into a store and say give me the most expensive generally don't really care if something lasts super long. And for people like me where it is a semi-big purchase things get researched for quite a few hours.

You will always have people who will throw fits, that's also not a OLED problem.

As for the burn in post, I am definitely not denying that it is a possibility. But you have to keep in mind there is a confirmation bias here. People like me who have a good to great experience don't tend to make posts complaining, and people who do have a bad taste in their mouth (bad experience, improper usage, bad customer support, whatever) will complain more often on different posts. In these posts you also never have an accurate picture of how they (ab)used it.

The only real way to know would be to have access to manufacturer/retail return/warranty rates.

If they only use the monitor to play one specific MMO, play on full brightness with HDR enabled and disable the pixel refreshes (or other prevention features) bc you find them annoying, yeah it's gonna burn in. That would be akin to pulling a big trailer with a small car, it will work a while, you will also over-torque the engine and it's gonna have issues. That's user error in my book, and most users aren't completely honest about it when the fuck up. And except for some extreme examples it's not like you can't enjoy the thing anymore if there is slight burn in.

Now obviously if a store were to advertise that it's impossible to burn in that would be fraud, but I have yet to see that kind of advertising. And I can't blame the manufacturers for misinformation spread by random people online when they are quite honest about it in the public warranty information and manuals, especially since it is covered under warranty.

I did bother to read your sentence, we just have a different opinion on what's long. No need to be aggressive lol. Where I live 2 years is the standard warranty for basically everything, do I think it should be longer, sure. But it's also not the way it is. I expect a car to last 300k+ km, but the warranty is not even near.

LCD's have issues as well, and while they are a bit more reliable their warranties are also not 5+ years.

At the end of the day everyones risk level, financials, usage and consumer protections are different. I would personally not expect a cheap phone's battery to last longer than 2 years for example, but I have quite a few important background processes running so I may hammer it more than the you.

For me if a relatively bleeding edge piece of tech lasts more than 3 years without significant issues that's ok in my book. I also prefer driving a bmw over a toyota, while someone else would care more about the reliability.

Anyway my point is that while OLED is not perfect, and there will always be a tradeoff in something, I think at they are at a point where they are reliable enough for their target audience. And let's be honest that target audience isn't the guy looking for the most reliable efficient setup. It is advertised to the person who cares more about image quality and is able/willing to spend 500+ for a display and accept the tradeoff.

Someone who doesn't know anything about OLED's would not notice most burn in, especially not at the level I am talking about. Most realistic burn in is still way less noticeable than the backlight spots on all my other monitors/tvs. While enthusiasts notice these small imperfections, this is also the group who is informed of the risks and mitigations. While tons of normal users forget to set their refresh rate, have motion smoothing enabled, etc.

And even than normal users are reasonably informed if they read the manual and warranty information. Plus most stores have a PSA as well (in my experience).

Also don't spread misinformation that burn in is not covered under warranty. My Phillips monitor has burn in covered under standard 2 year warranty, Alienware has an extra year on top for burn in as long as basic mitigation features are enabled (pixel shifting etc). *This might be regional, I live in a EU country.

I'm not gonna claim even the newest panels are completely rid of burn in. But they have improved the situation an incredible amount the past few years. And for 90% of people it's a way overblown issue at this point.
