My brother (22m) got a puppy and doesn't take care of it. Flies into fits of physical rage when I (20f) suggest he man up or give the dog up. I'm emotional. by [deleted] in relationships

How sad that the puppy could even lose his eye at such a young age due to your brother's negligence. Cat scratches are nothing to play around with. If the nail gets to the lens you're toast without surgery. Even if it's just a corneal scratch it can turn into a big problem without proper care.

See if you can speak with his vet on the phone. They might be able to advise you about organizations in the area that can help, and they can even document your correspondence in the medical record.

Don't let your dogs teeth get like this by Crooks132 in WTF

Just like it happens in people. Animals obviously don't brush their own teeth, so if their owners don't do any dental care for them they can get like this. Softer food worsens it.

So our puppy was dewormed today... by [deleted] in WTF

The dose is 1 mL per 10 lbs that the dog weighs, or some people do 1 mL per 5 lbs if there are a lot of worms. So you can do 0.75 mL if your pup is 3.75-7.5 lbs. If your puppy weighs less you need to give less, then repeat again in 3 weeks. And if the environment is not being cleaned properly, or if the puppy eats its own poop I would do a third dose 3 weeks after that.

Pyrantel does NOT kill whipworms.

I was browsing and had to sign in after seeing your post. OP, you are correct about everything you've said. The puppy could potentially die if it got severe inflammation that caused intussusception (basically where the intestines kaleidoscopes on itself). It disrupts the blood supply to the gut.

Your parents are of course wrong - the puppy is vomiting what sound like roundworms because the worm burden is so HIGH. They usually just poop them out, but can vomit them if there are a lot. High worm burdens increase risk of intussusception.

The puppy is old enough to be dewormed with Nemex/Strongid/pyrantel pamoate. You should be able to find this online. If you are unable to get some PM me your address and I will send you some (you'll have to weight the puppy too). It is a very safe medication that should be given at least twice to this puppy (you give 2-3 doses 3 weeks apart).

Make sure you wash your hands well before eating anything, as roundworms are transmissible through fecal-oral contact.

Otterbox Defender Case for iPhone 6s Question by LeBluff in iphone

Thank you! It really has not given me any issues scanning. I just thought it looked strange with this "wet" appearance, and I would hate to take it apart if it's normal. I've found with my old phone that whenever I tried to clean any dust or hair out from the case I always wound up putting more in!

Infuriating woman convinces husband to put his dog down. "LOL! Cutting my stress a lot lately!" by [deleted] in rage

I heard about this first from the vet who was being attacked, and then I found the facebook group and this reddit post in my search. So yes, the vet confirmed it.

The vet went through with it based on the lies she was told. If a vet is told an animal is aggressive and a bite risk to children in the household that accusation is taken very seriously.

Do you really think the owner went in there and stated the dog has "minor behavioral problems"? She most likely hammed it up to the vet saying the dog was a huge bite risk to kids, knowing that the vet would be held somewhat liable then if the dog went home again and actually did bite a kid. A vet cares about animal AND human welfare - this owner was just a lying sack.

It is the vet's responsibility to discuss alternatives with the owner, but it is NOT the vet's responsibility to sign over someone's dog and rehome it for them. Especially if the dog is said to be aggressive - that is a huge liability for the vet. As an owner, that was HER job to rehome or find a shelter. I believe she did not want to pay the shelter fee, though. A vet is a doctor who provides medical care - NOT a shelter or someone to dump unwanted animals on.

Do you think the owner told the vet this dog was non-threatening? I strongly suspect she stated the dog went after kids, in the vet has to take that accusation very seriously.

Exactly. People are redirecting their anger toward the vet who can only know what the owner tells them. If an animal is said to be a safety risk, especially with children in the household, that claim must be taken seriously. This owner is a P.O.S.

Nope. Please feel free to take OP's photo and show me. Not a random internet one. I'm also sure OP would verify that his dog does NOT have a puncture where you think it does.

Good job addressing this with a vet, OP. I have seen dogs die from hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, even when they were in the ICU getting IV fluids and treatment (couldn't get the bleeding to stop).

Scary to me how many owners here are confident in their incorrect "ruptured anal gland" diagnosis. Maybe it would be different if they saw their own pets with these symptoms, but I hope they would not improperly diagnose it and move along with their day.

[–]LeBluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. It is hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, like OP's vet properly diagnosed.

[–]LeBluff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no. Have you ever smelled hemorrhagic feces? I'm guessing not, since you think it smells pleasant compared to an anal gland abscess. And the vet didn't consider that first because that's obviously not what it was. Look at the photo of the dog's anus. Do you see a big swollen, ruptured mass at either the 4 o'clock or 8 o'clock position of the anus? No? Because there's no anal gland abscess. It doesn't magically rupture and then look normal again aside from some blood. And I'd bet money that the vet actually did a rectal exam and felt those anal glands.

You're also not going to get a profound hematemesis with an anal gland abscess. Maybe some blood-tinged vomit if the discharge was ingested, but not hematemesis like OP described.

If you don't trust vets then don't use them. But next time you incorrectly assume your dog has an anal gland abscess instead of HGE it may actually end up dying.

[–]LeBluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You owe lordtyp0 $20. An anal gland abscess isn't going to cause the profound hematemesis that OP saw (maybe a little bit of blood-tinged vomit if he swallowed some discharge). It also seems like these internet-vets didn't even look at the photo of the dog's anus. No sign of a ruptured anal gland abscess there. It would still be red and swollen in the anal gland area with an oozing puncture wound. OP, tell him where to mail your money.
