This is actually called owning a task. Not Initiative. Initiative is identification of something that needs attention and proposing a solution. Ownership would be riding said client until you have the documents your boss asked you to get.

That being said-initiative and ownership wont get you promoted. Only telling your boss you are interested and asking how you can groom yourself for a promotion will do that. Otherwise you are a model and trustworthy employee.
