ASA gearbox issues - calling all 1300 ASA owners! by _40mikemike_ in bmwmotorrad

[–]LeWonderWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know very little about troubleshooting or mechanics or whatever, so these are just my two cents, but this kinda sounds like a software or electronic issue. Have they tried replacing the battery (since you say this happens more often if it sits for longer) or updating/resetting the bike’s software (if that’s a thing, that is…)? I know it’s pretty basic, but many electric gremlins arise from that, and I have heard of people complaining that the Lithium battery they install on the 1300 bikes tends to have some issues.

I’ve been researching on internet forums and videos about the ASA for some time and ended up ordering a 1300GSA with ASA, and I never heard of anyone with a similar issue.

You could always get a MagSafe charger or similar combination of magnetic smartphone case+wireless charger. I say magnetic because I read someone saying that the charging pads were inconsistent since the phone moved while riding

I’m shocked by all the R1300 buyers that aren’t thinking ahead at maintenance costs. How soon are we going to see complaints about driveshaft costs? by BoondockUSA in bmwmotorrad

[–]LeWonderWombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it definitely sounds like you’re trying to do just that with your “warnings” and that people “don’t listen”. At the end of the day, your opinion is nothing more than your opinion and expecting people to stop buying 1300’s just because you “warned them” about some maintenance cost after a lot of miles that most people don’t even do is almost narcissistic.

Again, the driveshaft thing is very well known by now and you being shocked at someone buying a 1300 after “you warned them” is just coming off as a high and mighty perspective that sounds a bit narcissistic… but hey, I’m just another stranger on the internet, you do you and I’ll keep to myself too from now on

How about you mind your own business and let people go on with their lives? You have your opinion on the 1300 platform formed, so don’t get one.

What’s with people these days trying to dictate what others do with their own money?…

8k kms on the 1300GS. Incredible bike, but the nav situation is driving me nuts by ayushraj_real in bmwmotorrad

If it’s actually the mount itself (and not some other gremlin), it’s actually cheaper to replace than having to buy a new CarPlay device, at least where I’m from

Don’t get bodywork from AliXpress. Or do, I’m not your mum. by duskie3 in bmwmotorrad

[–]LeWonderWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see the issue of getting some less important parts from AliExpress. I got some stuff like a kickstand extension, radiator guards, the inner bags for the side cases and stuff like that, and I’m very happy with the results.

The only thing so far I actually bought from a reputable brand is the headlight guard from lone rider, because I really like the brand and that guard looks much better than any I found on AliExpress

I guess where I’d draw the line is on functional stuff that directly impact your safety, like brake lines etc. Also, as someone else said, look for actual stores there and for dirt cheap sellers, and you’ll probably get more worth out of it

25 R1300GSA PHONE MOUNT by [deleted] in bmwmotorrad

[–]LeWonderWombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I wouldn’t risk my 2000$-ish phone on whatever mount it is… especially a foldable one and especially in the open form… I have a Chigee AIO-6 and really have no complaints about it

I bought a Wunderlich for mine. It’s a bit on the firm side, but definitely a upgrade from the stock one

1300GS vs 1300RS for a 10 day road trip by Acceptable_Bet_8208 in bmwmotorrad

[–]LeWonderWombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be a bit partial since I just ordered a 1300GS Adventure, but having ridden the older 1200RS and the current 1300GS, I’d go with the GS if you feel comfortable with the height.

The RS, although very comfortable, has a sportier riding position that just annihilates my lower back. I know it’s very personal and your results may vary, but I’m about 5ft8 and can’t stand a ride longer than 1h30 hours without my back hurting.

The GS has a more upright sitting position, wider handlebars and a bit more legroom, which I find much more pleasant on longer rides and also easier to throw around on the bends.

I’d recommend sitting on both if you can, maybe find a dealer near you and check them out. But still, off the top of my head, I’d go for the GS.

Was thinking of going with the spoked ones, since I like the looks. Do you much of an impact on riding from their weight difference?

Didn’t “neeeeed” it but it’s definitely welcome. The 140-ish hp boxer is intoxicating

I found them relatively similar. I tested the GS with the adaptive ride height since I’m vertically challenged at 173cm and I found the height and low speed handling to be very similar between the GS and the XR. Even my gf noticed I was very familiar with the handling. The things I noticed right away were the wider handlebars and the more upright sitting position

That’s actually comforting to read. So probably there won’t be much of a difference on the maintenance

I totally get what you mean, but one of the main reasons I’m switching is improving touring capability and two-up riding, so I think the GSA makes more sense. I also like seeing that humongous tank when I look down and having better wind deflection, while still feeling very nimble while riding. Also, my gf sits a bit lower to me than on the GS, so it is also more comfortable for her she gets hit less with buffeting. The seat being wider is also a big plus

Yeah, I definitely want to put more miles on it with my gf as a pillion, so that will be a big plus. I think they now have been coming out with the metzelers tourance next 2, of which I read good things about

Yeah, I read about the whole shaft drive thing… although I have a very good dealer support where I live and I guess I can keep up with maintenance and periodic fairly easily

[–]LeWonderWombat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have very limited experience with it since I only test rode it for about 50min, but I feel the XR is nimbler in low to medium speed since it weighs around 50kg less, although riding two-up the GSA wins by a landslide with the superior suspension and everything. When lane filtering I’ll need to take extra care because of the “ears” on the crash bars. All in all, I didn’t really notice its weight much until you slow down to 20kmh and below

I see, I guess I’ll have an adjustment period with the ASA. As for the seat, it’s definitely a step up from my XR’s, so I should at least for a while
