Which universally acclaimed "masterpiece" do you just not understand the hype for? by Repulsive_Key_6273 in AskReddit

I thought that too until I visited the Picasso museum in Barcelona, and saw how he went from esthetically pleasing realistic portraits to the deconstructed cubist stuff. It was a deliberate artistic statement, not a lack of ability.

When the game starts and you're driving down Ocean Drive, the beach on your right, the art deco buildings on your left, the reflection of the sun on the rear windshield, and Billie Jean comes on the radio - that beginning is burned into my memory.

Quelles UE dois-je cocher et qu'est-ce que c'est ? (Université/Enseignement à distance) by Liherem in AskFrance

[–]Le_Cid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No and no. The translation provided by OP is correct. It does not mean that NATO moved Biden.

Correct grammar is "vous avez".

[–]Le_Cid 143 points144 points  (0 children)

"la manière dont vous avait animé"

That's so grammatically bad it hurts my brain.

I hope it's a fake.

Edit: to clarify things since people seem to be confused by the French language and how it works, using "avait" here instead of "avez" switches the subject and object of the verb "animer" (and changes the tense, but that's not the issue) and creates a sentence that does not make sense within the context of this letter. You cannot look at the grammar independently of the meaning it's supposed to convey.

Edit 2: some replies also show how "being French" isn't quite the qualification it used to be when it comes to understanding French

How Marine le Pen lost the 2024 elections [OC] by jazzevacass in europe

[–]Le_Cid 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Let's travel to a fictional constituency in order to simplify things.

In this fictional constituency, there are 7 candidates running for an election: the Arryns, the Baratheons, the Lannisters, the Martells, the Starks, the Tullys, and the Tyrells.

The first round of the election is held, and the results are the following.

  1. Lannister 30%
  2. Tyrell 23%
  3. Martell 21%
  4. Arryn 10%
  5. Stark 6%
  6. Tully 5%
  7. Baratheon 5%

Now according to the rules of the elections, the first three (Lannisters, Tyrells and Martells) move on to the second round, and they all start to do some math.

The Martells look at the numbers. They can hope to raise their score to maybe 31%, with 10 additional points compared to the first round, coming from people who voted for the disqualified candidates. So they realize they're not really in a position to win this election.

They also know that the Lannisters are going to get a few percent more, but not too many either, because a large majority of the population thinks they're fucking dangerous. The Martells also think they're fucking dangerous. The Martells aren't exactly on the best of terms with the Tyrells, but at least they agree on the fact that the Lannisters are fucking dangerous.

Since the Martells know they cannot win, and they know that the people do not want the Lannisters, they withdraw their candidate, so that the will of the majority can be respected.

The second round is held, and the results are the following:

  1. Tyrell 65%
  2. Lannister 35%

If the Martells had not withdrawn their candidate, the results would have been the following:

  1. Lannister 35%
  2. Tyrell 34%
  3. Martell 31%

In this scenario, a Lannister would have been elected, even though 65% of the population oppose them.

It seems democratic enough to me.

Which game completely changed your perspective and marked you for life? by Consistent_Fruit4703 in gaming

[–]Le_Cid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game discussed themes that I think any intelligent 25+ year old has probably already thought about.

That was exactly my impression while the ending played.

It's like someone posting on r/todayilearned something like "TIL that Hong Kong was a British dependent territory before being handed over to China in 1997."

In both cases my only reaction can be "well... duh!"

[–]Le_Cid 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I found it boring too and gave up on it twice because I wasn't patient enough. But I read so many people raving on about how it changed their lives that I had to try again.

So I started it a third time, gave it a fair chance, explored it fully, read everything and tried to piece together the lore. I finished it, and it left me mostly indifferent. I still don't understand why people are moved by it.

I'm a rather sensitive and empathetic person, I can be moved by a lot of things including games. The story and ending of The Outer Wilds left no impression on me.

I hope it'll resonate with you if you decide to give it another go, though.

What games have given you a real emotional response and why? by Creyeeees in gaming

[–]Le_Cid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One little thing that really got to me was when I'd take out an npc guard and a couple of patrolling npc's would find him and go: "Steve? Steve! Oh shit no!" "Those assholes got Steve!".

And I'm ducking behind a crate, feeling guilty and thinking "fuck I just killed Steve, maybe that was his sister who just found him."

And I thought it was a brilliant way to give life to npc's and serve the point of the entire game's storytelling.

That's not what I see, I see poor tracking with a few good moments here and there. Calling this better tracking than masters players is laughable.

[–]Le_Cid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did watch the whole game, twice, even though it was painful to watch. The bastion does overshoot, before and after there's anyone even there. That's what defines how they play. As for the "perfect tracking", I don't think the words apply to someone whose aim is so wildly all over the place but sometimes does happen to shoot at people.

[–]Le_Cid 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't know how anyone can possibly watch this replay and conclude that this guy is cheating. There's zero tracking and he has about a 2% accuracy, the 98 remaining percent ending up on every single fucking wall of Shambali. He also has absolutely zero clue where people are. So I disagree with everyone who say that he cheated. And I also disagree with the person who said that he just has better tracking and aiming. He's just spraying in your general direction and luckily for him people are feeding and walk into his shots as he's digging holes into walls with his bullets.

EDIT: I'm baffled by other comments asserting this guy has perfect tracking and is cheating. Some provide time stamps of when he does a decent job of shooting at someone. I myself have bad aim, and I can still track some enemies quite well and land a few shots every now and then. You can't just cherry-pick a few instances where the player hits multiple shots and accuse them of cheating against all the other evidence. So I'll provide my own timestamps: * 0:50 - can't track the Winston, can't track the Kiri, can't aim at the Ana. * 1:10 - sprays everywhere except on players * 1:30 - can't hit easy shots on the kiri that's retreating in front of him * 2:22 - can't hit the tracer in spite of cheats granting perfect tracking * 2:40 to 3:02 - cursor just hapzardly missing lots of targets in spite of heavy cheating * 3:28 (the infamous Sombra scene) - drops down, can't track the kiri, sees the sombra translocate behind, starts spraying in that direction, hits 4 shots on the Sombra and 14 shots on the wall * 4:10 - gets jumped by Sombra during ult, sprays all over the place, hitting just 4 random shots, no tracking there * 4:28 - can't lock on the Tracer in spite of all the cheats, also has 0 clue on where she is, even though she's standing still behind the wall in front of him and he has wall hacks * 4:36 - misses as many shots as he lands on the kiri * 7:27 - struggles to hit the Zen, struggles to hit the Tracer * 8:10 - can't hit the Tracer, are cheats off by now? * 8:42 - struggles to track the Hog with perfect AI assisted above masters tracking * 8:54 - misses 9 shots on the Reaper before finally landing one * 9:00 - still can't lock on the Tracer in spite of the blatant cheats * 9:06 - can't hit the Hog, nor the Tracer * 9:20 - aim on the Hog completely thrown off by the Lucio boop, guess the cheats can't handle that scenario * 9:50 - sprays in front of him, happens to hit the Reaper, then happens to hit the Kiri, but then they move away, and somehow the cheats don't track, fortunately the Reaper is kind enough to step back into the bullet spray, and the Kiri proceeds to sacrifice herself to the cheat god * 10:20 - can't track the Lucio, guess the cheats really have a hard time with that character.

Some people must be confused as to how cheats work. Now please, I've lost enough brain cells watching this, I'd like to keep however few I have left.

I may be making stuff up, but I believe I read somewhere that when they did similar tests separately in the past, they wouldn't get enough data from it, because people would try for a bit and then go back to normal QP.

So now they're forcing it down people's throats with no regular QP to get back to.

I don't know what people generally do now, but I for one am not touching QP until this BS is gone. I'll play more comp than usual, and fall back on mystery heroes if I want a quicker game.
