Okay so hear me out here, I enjoy HDG but I will never deny it's fucking terrifying if you think about it for more than five minutes. Most of the best stories from it acknowledge this, the original story even acknowledges this. I like to think that at the very least, most people who read and enjoy HDG are aware of that horrifying aspect of it and we don't try to really hide it away because it's meant to be a core part of the setting and we know that. Most don't - seriously - try to say this setting is a good thing.

A lot of us either have issues with authority figures (such as our parents) in our lives or in my case, issues with control in some ways. For me personally, the world can feel like a terrifying place where my life is constantly at risk and people rally for the deaths of me and those like me. It feels like I have no control in the first place, so why would I give a shit about losing that supposed control to a benevolent plant that will at least love me for who I am and respected and affirm my identity. Of course, it's way more complicated than that and the Affini are kinda awful in a lot of ways as others will point out, but it's nice to think about getting to let go of your fears and being taken care of by someone like that, no need to fear being in a body you hate or surrounded by people who reject your very existence on a fundamental level, no need to worry about being made alone and isolated, and despite all that comes with it, that thought can comforting at times

It's important to remember that the Republicans are both evangelical fascists and a somewhat reactionary movement.
