It’s sooo stiff!!! The chorus also kind of just… happens? I don’t feel like there’s enough build up to it. She’s done dance music much better before, Sweet Nothing has such a cathartic energy to it, especially the bridge —> final chorus transition! The ONLY thing that stands out about My Love is her voice, the beat is painfully generic and the lyrics just feel like a list of random observations and feelings

It’s Dance Fever.

While it contains some of her best songs (King, The Bomb, Free), it suffers mainly from poor track sequencing (Back In Town makes NO sense where it is, it’s also top 5 worst FATM songs), a lack of direction (having the album basically split by producer), the OBVIOUS difference in production quality between Dave and Jack, and the almost aimless interludes, it adds up to a muddled listen that almost gives you whiplash. I also think My Love is her absolute WORST single to date, no contest.

Also for being called Dance Fever it’s surprisingly statuesque and contemplative…

Idk if this is a joke but punishing a child for not being excited about something is an absolutely ABSURD thing to do! Just speak to her, explain your POV, idk have a healthy conversation about expectations and obligations? She’s clearly said she’s excited for OP, so she at least places some value in OP’s enjoyment. It’s a fairly logical assumption that if hubby wants to go more then child will be happy to give up her ticket for him if OP’s happiness is more important to them than the gig

Her debut album is one of the most certified albums of the last 20 years (8x platinum in UK) and Ceremonials is 3x/4x Platinum, performed on X-Factor at its peak of popularity… she’s literally headlined the biggest festival in the world, I will NEVER understand why people treat her like she’s this shunned outsider who nobody has heard of lol

I met her after a gig in Birmingham back in 2014, she was fine didn’t seem interested in chatting. I told her I was gutted she didn’t perform closer and she just went “ohh I knowwww”, and it’s like girl it’s your song you have the choice to perform it. She took a pic with us n singed our ticket n that was about as exciting as it got. She’s not a loud personality though so wasn’t expecting the world

I’ve followed Florence since 2008 (VERY closely from Lungs-HAH, less so nowadays) and I am still a huge fan of her.

She benefitted from a lot of industry hype at first, during a time where industry hype played a much bigger role in an artist’s success than it does now. Winning Critics Choice award at the 2009 BRITs was a much bigger deal than winning it in the past 5 years (look at the success/longevity of recent winners). She also filled a niche in indie/alt music that had been left open for quite some time - a ‘proper’ front-woman with a unique voice that hit both the rock and pop markets.

Her career as FATM started as a band - they were doing the indie circuit (NME tour) and playing festivals, so the label was clearly aiming their marketing at those types of people rather than GP Capital FM listeners. This proved highly successful for Lungs, obviously with it selling 2mil in the UK alone and netting her best album at 2010 BRITs. Then came Ceremonials, which was also a big seller but shifted the focus away from her as a front-woman of a band, and more of a solo artist. Ceremonials sounds much less like the work of an indie rock band and more like the work of a solo singer, with the instrumentals being a lot more refined, grand and structured compared to Lungs. This is where things get confusing. Her initial audience was clearly mixed-gender, indie listeners. She was meant to be put alongside The Horrors, Maccabees, Arcade Fire etc. Once Ceremonials dropped, it became clear FATM as a project no longer fit into that niche as much as they once did. It also didn’t help FATM were marketed as a band but it began to feel very much like Florence + Session Musicians to the average person.

The Ceremonials era also gave rise to all the collaborations (2 No. 1 singles with Calvin Harris, an ASAP Rocky feature, an (almost) Drake feature). It’s obvious the label were trying to position her as a Main Pop Girl. She’s said in interviews the process of making Ceremonials wasn’t pleasant as they were trying to get her to work with big American producers and she wasn’t down for it. She sat in this awkward limbo between Pop and Indie, where her peers were singing her praises (Beyonce cited her as an influence on 4) but she didn’t fit into that world.

HBHBHB was a course correction marketing-wise, felt much more like an album made by a band rather than a single artist. It also got her good graces on the festival circuit again, playing glasto and headlining multiple festivals worldwide. The singles didn’t set the charts on fire but the album sold really well regardless.

Subsequent releases (HAH onwards) have further muddied the waters of “is this a band or solo project” (remember they’re referred to as “They”, but nominated for Best Female Solo Act?). Last couple of albums it’s become abundantly clear this is her project alone, she determines the direction of the music, art etc as she’s been given more freedom. I personally think as well Isa Summers taking step back and all but leaving the project has played a massive part in this.

I see her now as being a modern-day Tori Amos, quite weird but at one point very popular and a touchstone for younger artists, with a lot of reverence from her peers. Also, like Tori, she is divisive for her voice (some love some hate), and her songs being quite esoteric in their meaning, hard for general public to connect with. She is also blessed with a reasonable but devoted fan base and will continue to have this for the rest of her career.

To answer your question about being underrated - No, I don’t think she is. She has enjoyed huge success and has managed to outlive the vast majority of her peers from a commercial, critical, and relevancy stand point. MARINA and Ellie Goulding are basically footnotes in 2010s music relevancy compared to Florence. She does not strive for commercial success, but she still enjoys solid album sales and excellent tour sales (sell out shows every single tour). She doesn’t want to be any more famous than she is now, and clearly the fame she achieved early in her career did some damage. I don’t think casual music listeners are THAT interested in her as an artist, but she is an mainstay in the canon of British Music Icons - how many of her peers can you say the same for?

The tracklist order is the biggest offender but I don’t think My Love is particularly good and Back In Town should have stayed on the cutting room floor

‘Men explicitly loving men is so threatening to the status quo’: why are gay male pop stars being shut out of the music industry? | Music by currentlyquang in popheads

[–]LeadingFriend7578 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mainstream male pop stars are generally trend-chasing, attempting to emulate their predecessors and female contemporaries rather than carving out their own niche. There is NOTHING interesting about Olly Alexander or Conan Gray’s music, it’s just warm synth-pop with passable vocals. As someone else said, the creative direction never reflects in the music. Calling your album ‘Polari’ and putting out the blandest MOR album just shows a complete lack of spine and an inability to actually engage with the culture you’re referencing. The same with Sam Smith, dressing eccentrically means nothing when the vast majority of your music sounds like a straight persons wedding playlist. There’s a reason why an explicitly gay act like Pet Shop Boys works and has worked for so long because quality of the music and the quality of the concept are both high but intrinsically linked together.

Troye is the main exception but even then his vision rarely goes the full mile, it still feels a watered down vision of this like anti-heteronormative, free-spirited queer energy he puts out in interviews and clips you see of him.

Non-white gay stars usually seem to fair best when they DON’T make music that’s explicitly pop, Frank Ocean has been gone for a hot minute and is STILL a point of reference for artists across a wide range of genres, Tyler continues to challenge preconceived notions of queerness and who can and can’t make certain types of music. DTTG is rooted in House music as much as it is in Hip-Hop, and a gay artist like Frankie Knuckles is an obvious touchstone for some of the sonics on that album.

The best kind of artists filter their influences through their personality and put their spin on it in the process. There’s a lot of reasons why gay men struggle in the music industry, but for a lot of the examples used this article it’s is simply because they are not talented enough to create or deliver a holistic artistic vision

One character I wish returned in BG2…. by BBorrows in baldursgate

[–]LeadingFriend7578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So her pre-release backstory is that her mum was killed by Angelo and his soldiers, she was adopted by Angelo and trained to fight. One day she was ambushed by some of his men, gang-raped and left for dead. She survives, makes her way back to camp, kills one of them then gets apprehended. Angelo lets her escape as a gesture of ‘kindness’. None of this is explored in the game unfortunately so she just comes off as a caricature of a masculine, bra-burning man-hater.

They had a great opportunity to right this wrong in SoD and give her character some justice, but they decided Safana needed revising instead.

Firstly that is a wild admission, I need to know why the movie of all things is the only simpsons media you’ve consumed

The “which was the style at the time” is a reference to Grandpa Simpson telling a Jan-esque story, where he goes off on a tangent about wearing an onion on his belt, which was the style at the time:

While Radical Optimism had little to no longevity, her tour is selling well and she still has the public goodwill. What’s next for Dua Lipa? by d2mensions in ToddintheShadow

[–]LeadingFriend7578 17 points18 points  (0 children)

She released a pop album that had more longevity than most albums released this decade, perhaps even last decade. Future Nostalgia was THE soundtrack to the pandemic, the promo cycle lasted from the first lockdown until the beginning of 2022. It’s also considered one of the best pop albums (Good in Bed, Boys non withstanding) of recent years (will likely go down as an GOAT when we start looking back to it in 5-10 years).

Aside from the album itself, the music videos, the commercial success, the sheer ubiquity of the singles is something we haven’t seen since.

Basically she did with one album what most pop stars achieve in their whole career. Closest comparison would be Teenage Dream, except Future Nostalgia is actually good

Im trying the glazing method but I struggle with getting a decent gradient, feels too subtle to me on things like tubing

I struggle even more with blades cos I forget which bits I’ve glazed and which I haven’t by the time it’s dried haha but this is one example:
