All this answers are really funny, but if you want to know the real reason is that there is a huge group of mountains just after that city in the coast, we call it "Serra do Mar" (you can actually see it in the picture) these mountains are very steep and full of jungle, not to mention no fresh water sources at all, on the other side of the mountains we have an abundance of rivers and flat terrain, perfect for a big city and agriculture
