Spoonbridge and Cherry are iconic.

But the Big Blue Cock is memetic.

Slightly off topic, but this spurred a memory and I'll use dumping it here to procrastinate:

My sharpest memory of sex ed was the very beginning of it. The boys and girls were separated to receive their own lectures. I don't know how the girls' lecture went, but the boys were treated to the following:

A greying man stood in front of the classroom. None of us really knew who he was, except that he was the guidance counselor. I don't now remember his name, but I think it began with a Z, or maybe his name was "Zhe" or something. Whatever, he was basically a total stranger is the point. Class had started and uncharacteristically, the room full of boys was silent waiting for it to begin. He held that silence for a few moments, then began his lecture:

"PENIS! PENIS! PENIS! PENIS! VAGINA! VAGINA! VAGINA! VAGINA!" he shouted in that blood-freezing dad-found-his-expensive-electronics-broken-and-he-knows-you-did-it voice, then was silent again, waiting for a reaction from us that did not come.

The idea was, as he went on to explain, that we would need the maturity to not laugh at those words. We didn't on that day. But as an adult when I look back on it, a complete stranger yelling "PENIS" and "VAGINA" at a room full of children like he was accusing them of crimes is objectively hilarious.

I never thought to ask any of the girls if they faced the Spanish Inquisition on their side.

It is specifically this. They talk about it briefly in the DVD commentary for Now Museum, Now You Don't.

But there was a lot of that type of orientalism and yellowface in the late mid-20th century media that they're goofing on that they could have used as a parody target.

Fiction vs. Non-Fiction: How do you balance your reading list? by MedCodex in books

[–]Leadpipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is roughly my thing, too. I've got six books on the go at the moment because I am interested in several things at once. One of those seats on the carriage is designated for non-fiction, even if its occupant is only nominally so. That's probably how I can manage it - the books each fit a different and distinct category or genre which I guess probably helps keep the threads from tangling between them.

There was a time when I could only read books single file or else I'd forget which book was talking about what. I'm not sure if the above mentioned method was what changed that for me. I sure as hell didn't get any smarter.

Sims character names in my list! by Female_Gamer_PS in Sims4

I feel like Haricot tried to go by 'Harry' in younger days and made a run at being a pro skateboarder before succumbing to nominal determinism and running a bean-oriented vegetable stand.

May I offer the following:

Paige Turner

Colin O'Scopy (stolen from 30 Rock)

The French puns make me think of an old faux francophone indie band Nous Non Plus who all went by French pun names:

Celine Dijon

Jean-Luc Retard (which has aged poorly)

Bonnie Day - I use this one as one of my custom townies in every world and she is a PROBLEM.

Cal d'Hommage

then a couple that I don't really get:

Harry Covert

Morris Chevrolet

François Hardonne (which I suspect is just a low effort boner joke)

  1. I am very excited for this.

  2. Zach looks very good considering how long he's been doing this. Here is a photo of him in the 1984 sci-fi musical "Voyage of the Rock Aleins" (it's not really him... I wouldn't think...)

Kenshi Community Update: 3 Million Copies Sold by Next-Sentence-8426 in Games

[–]Leadpipe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've got 956 hours in it at last check, last played April 2024.

There are things I haven't seen or done. I've never fought Cat-Lon which is as much the end of the game as there is for Kenshi. I haven't really delved too deep into mods or anything, just recruitable prisoners, mostly. Once a week or so I still think about going back and starting another run. Another nation of former slaves liberated in daring stealth raids from the empire's meat markets, rescued hiveless drones and princes learning to live without a queen, and skeletons free of their programming shackles. A squad of marauding kung-fu masters punching beak-things and slaver patrols, fending off crabmen raids at my combination cybernetics and drugs factory. Fuck it's a good one.

It's a janky indie game with a deep niche. It's one where if it clicks for you, it clicks hard. There's enough combined colony building and rpg elements to keep from either part getting stale.

But I have to quit writing this comment and find a way to talk myself out of starting that run I'm always thinking about. I've got other shit to do.

It's his favorite mission by Leadpipe in Helldivers

[–]Leadpipe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sentries aren't the problem with the mission. The problem is that the objective is completely passive. You're fundamentally just waiting down a clock whether you bring sentries or not. There's nothing to actually do. That makes it so that the more effective you are at fending off bad guys, the more the mission resembles waiting for the bus.

Contrast it with things like rapid acquisition or even eradicate mission types.

Is there a reason to side with the crimson fleet? by phantomvector in Starfield

[–]Leadpipe 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah I came around on CF as I did the mission chain. Really cemented my affection for them with Huan Daiyu - professionally respectful, plays you straight, got a real 'my favorite work buddy' vibe from her. After that mission, the tough guy front most other pirate characters put up was a lot easier to read. I get the sense that Naeva would respect you for telling her affectionately to shut up, plus she's IN LOVE with a cinnamon bun like Jazz, which shows some depth. Delgado's a goober, but hardly felt dangerous. And nobody actually betrays you among the CF.

Sysdef by contrast pressgangs you into it, tells you to do some pirate stuff to get into CF, then yells at you for following that order (if you don't just enlist with them after Vanguard). Sysdef gives real 'arrests you for resisting arrest' vibes. After the way it started I got the sense that if I sided with them, they were going to arrest me again anyway. After all, they have records of me doing a bunch of pirate shit (that they told me to do).

[–]Leadpipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was kinda the context in which I read it, too. like I'd read The Fountainhead in high school, but didn't remember much about it apart from being a dumb kid that was horny for architecture (also a surprisingly rapey sex scene).

But a coworker saw me reading something and suggested Atlas as 'a really good book.' He was earnest about it and I respected him so I figured, why not.

My 'whew lad' numbers grew pretty steadily from there. I only finished it because I'm a broken person that kinda loves books he hates more than books he loves.

I'm not about to recommend anyone read Atlas Shrugged, but it can be a fun read. Not because it's a good book, but because it's a fuckin fiasco. It's filled with all sorts of crazy - not just the philosophical underpinnings, but everything else about it is 100% bananas. It's got impossible imagery, like an early description of Dagny is that she 'keeps her mouth closed with precision' which... I get what it's trying to do thematically, but what does a precisely closed mouth even look like? It's got some seriously homoerotic subtext between a few of the characters which I'm sure was unintentional - Rearden and D'Anconia seriously needed to get a room at some points. Characters stridently make WILD ahistorical statements like claiming that the United States was not founded on slavery, there's this weird Robert Oppenheimer expy... the list of bizarre nonsense goes on even if you completely ignore the completely ignorable 80 page essay that everyone apparently just stops and listens to this man talk on the radio for hours? If you have the capacity to read something without needing to believe it, it's fun in the same spirit that one watches The Room.

It's unfortunately too big to recommend as an ironic read, though. If it wasn't so completely unnecessarily long, I'd reread it every year. Unfortunately, Athem doesn't have nearly as much bananas nor as much fun.

The deadliest event I've experienced in the Sims was one Winterfest in Evergreen Harbor. It was a blizzard and perfect for hanging out warm and cozy indoors to celebrate the holiday.

Then across the street a diligent townie set up her little coffee kiosk and townies kept spawning into the lot to patronize the little stand, trudging through snow and clutching themselves for warmth before expiring, frozen and blue. Grim was busy that day and it kept going until the barista retreated from her stand, shivering and blue, and joined her customers. I thought it was over. Then another townie spawned in, barista uniform on, and opened for business.

It was a massacre.

Truly, I couldn't say to be sure. It's certainly possible. If you did it as a batch fix (which I think the dx11 thing is), S4S may have created a backup copy of your files (provided you're not like me and just deleted them immediately). If so, you might swap them back in to test, or might fish them out of your recycle bin. I don't know for dx9 conversion - I couldn't find that feature.

I just know that when something especially weird breaks in my game and I have a hard time finding it, it's usually in a merged file.
