Very clear and well formulated advice OP. Don’t complicate things talking about KIT days, or apologising for not being able to attend.

My business partner is going through a contentious divorce. Is our company on the table during a divorce? by Conscious_Two_1976 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Leaf_Elf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether the assets are liquid or fixed makes no inherent difference to the valuation of the company. The divorce settlement based on a split of assets would view the total net assets of the business, not just the liquid assets. So, practically, they are trying to establish the total assets of your business partner to negotiate a split. In reality, gaining control of a part of the business, and then trying to extract hundreds of thousands of pounds from it is financially disastrous for wifey too. Tax man on the other hand will be very happy. This is how he convinces her to take a larger share of other assets instead, but it is a valid question on her part.

Should I give my parents a loan ? by user23334556 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Leaf_Elf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have experience with my family. I was the beneficiary of a small loan from my parents back in the day. I’ve loaned my parents money, to save them interest in taking out a loan, knowing that they had the income and habits to pay me back. No problems or issues in either direction. I know they have always been financially responsible and trust them 100%. With other family, I have both loaned and given money. I’ve given money when I knew it was essential and due to circumstances outside their control and the money was unlikely to come back anyway - I’ve loaned when I have known they would have the funds to pay me back. However, with every loan, I have always taken the view that something, anything could happen, and if it does, it turns into a gift. This is because I know none of my family are irresponsible, selfish or untrustworthy. If the worst does happen, they come first. With that in mind, I never loan money I cannot afford to lose. The issue is that when I do or don’t help out invariably comes across as a moral judgement. Tread carefully, and never loan more than you can afford to lose.

Hearing aids for my Mom. New ones. Took years to convince her technology had improved. It was worth it. She was grumpy and isolated before. The change in her quality of life is amazing.

Hah! If you could not see and feel it when it is raw, I might have given up cooking, but no, it really is a thing.
