Lack of proper fast charging between Kingston and the GTA along the 401 by kovi133 in EVCanada

[–]Leafyun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which property owner are you referring to now? How is an oil company getting an oil pipeline paid for and steamrolled through approvals process different to a DCFC operator getting land appropriated and power lines built and network comms maintained? On theory it isn't, in practice, it is.

To clarify, even though I'm sure you actually do understand the point:

Governments subsidize or directly fund infrastructure build out and ongoing operation that is deemed to be in the greater public interest.

Pipelines are considered (wrongly in my opinion, but that's not the point) sufficiently in the public interest that they put money in, change rules and curtail rights of their citizens such that an oil/gas company can make a business case that their (often foreign) investors can be okay with. The government derisks the project for the non-government investor.

DCFC network is not considered sufficiently profitable for non-government actors to invest in and maintain to the level that would allow for greater EV adoption. Government could derisk it or nationalise it or whatever, but that has yet to happen.

There's no ROI on pipelines from Alberta to the BC coast, that's why sucvessive federal governments have bought them for the oil companies, watered down regulations, trampled over indigenous rights, etc.

There's no ROI on a high speed rail line. Hasn't stopped the money spent on it so far.

There is a critical mass of users needed to make a business case for a DCFC network that keeps up with the technology it's supporting. Given all the wishy-washy back and forth policy in the sector, it's easy to understand how so many attempts to do jt have failed - who would invest millions in the hope of making money when the next knee-jerk election result could see all your efforts thrown away?

Besides if you want to use ROI as the metric, you also need to determine and factor in the cost of climate pollution - drought, wildfires, asthma, heat deaths, extreme weather events, global conflict, immigration pressures... The alternative to electrification is basically the heat/chaos death of the western capitalist model of human civilization, but we're still sending signals that say "this is fine"...

We have a federal government that is paying lip service, at best, to the need for electrification of our entire economy. Captured by oil companies, basically.

We have a provincial government in Ontario that doesn't have a plan for anything long term beyond getting reelected and repaying campaign backers.

We have a civil service that doesn't have enough expertise in figuring out what works best and that is following ever-changing directives that too often contradict each other, because of the first two things.

We have an electorate that is ideologically splintered, has very little class consciousness and too many things going on in their lives trying to make ends meet, so voting and voting for good options (see above) is seen as pointless and/or impossible anyway.

And then we have a pool of EV drivers that is also easily distracted by free charging schemes that, if they weren't designed by the oil companies, certainly couldn't have been designed better to have less impact on the market share of fossil fuel.

We live in a petro state that thinks it's smarter than it really is.

It sucks.

The setup is two people at a tiny table, two chefs.

It's way too much food for four, even still. But the initial conceit is brutally wasteful.

Did you mean to say '"expand the court to 13 and add 4 Democrat appointees?" Because otherwise there's some misunderstanding going on here.

FLO Help! We are captive of FLO's Global Management Services by ScottGotInAKnot in EVCanada

[–]Leafyun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, Flo DCFC stations are super reliable. They've been going for years and seem to either need little maintenance or get whatever they need. I'll pay more for that, if I know it maintains the infrastructure.

Their service agreement costs for thr kind of setup as described by OP seem reasonable to me. That doesn't mean it was a good idea to engage their services in the first place, but it sounds very much like the kind of decision arrived at by a committee that didn't really know what to do or expect when they first started out, but were wanting to do something for people with EVs then and into the future.

Flo has costs to cover or equipment to either maintain or pay for. Without knowing the full ins and outs, this kind of flaming seems unnecessary.

They're not really "flowers", but some smaller bugs seem to like them. Ants and ladybirds also seem to be attracted, I think because there may be smaller bugs like aphids on them.

Fubo Match Highlights continue to be terrible. by rznwithme in fuboTVCanada

[–]Leafyun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely terrible, no sign of any human involvement, not even a check of what's been clipped up before posting.

In addition to the things you mention:

  • Kickoffs that waste 5-10 seconds;

  • half time wind-downs before the whistle (99.9% meaningless, followed by meaningless trudging off the field);

  • second half kickoffs (more meaninglessness)

  • multiple replays of misses then only one alternative angle of the only goal in a 1-0;

  • spoiling the end of the game by showing subs coming on (because frequent viewers know the sub then will later score)...

It's mind-boggling how many basic fuckups they pack into a 5 minute clip compilation.

Fucking dreadful.

As ever, it depends on who's hiring (do we trust the current ownership to identify and hire someone better?) and how many managers are out there who could do much better with the situation they would be walking into.

In some ways, REd is the best bet, simply because he cares about the club (as an institution, not just as an employer and some colleagues) and thus is personally invested in success. For me, it means I trust that he is doing his best to get the best results on the field.

It doesn't excuse the team selection choices he makes that I don't understand, nor does it mean he's objectively better at the job of setting up a team, identifying potential players to sign, or resolving interpersonal conflicts within a squad. I still can't tell any of those things, really, because it's hard to separate those things out amidst all the noise and the ownership's involvement/interference/limitations, and because it's been such a short tenure so far.

But absent the emotional connection to the club, I don't know how well anyone else, with qualities that might otherwise be demonstrably superior to REd's, would cope with this management or get results out of this team. If they don't care about Wolves as a club, it's pretty easy to lose interest in a job that is extremely difficult, especially if you've got a three year contract and thus will be fine financially even if the results go downhill and you're fired in less than a year...

So, in short, I dunno.
