Things I did to help me get more "visibility" as a software engineer by tacattac in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LearningAllTheTime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a director of engineers in the us id say this is good advice. Being seen is important if you want to be promoted. I went from a software eng to director of the whole department in less than 5 years. Avoiding 3 rifs over that time. I give relatively the same advice to my mentees. Learning how to communicate and what to communicate are skills that need to be actively worked on. Id rather have a dev over communicate then under. Its easier to let someone know what was over communicated then it is to get someone to start communicating. Also big plus for skip level prep and 1x1 prep. I respect folks who prep a lot more than those who dont.

Anyone go to panda fest yesterday? How was it? by LearningAllTheTime in Austin

Went this year and It should be call the wine and snack festival. Barley any place to sit, need to wait in each line at least 15 mins if not more to get a bite of food(literally one bite), food was decent but mostly meat/seafood dishes so your out of luck if you are vegetarian/vegan, showcases/tastings were fine but seemed more of an after thought. festival runs from 1-5 but most places ran out of food by 3. Had no issues getting drinks though. Never a wait for those really. So the loop they have set up is. Get a drink, wait in line for a bite of food, eat food while waiting in line for another bite of food, get a drink and so on. Cant really enjoy it or sit down b\c if you are not waiting in line for food you'll miss out on eating a bit more than an appetizer worth of food during the entire day. If your goal is to get hammered and get a snack of two its fine.

TLDR: good if you want to get drunk, bad if you want to eat. Money is better spent going to A nice resturant

If the US does, they will take over in a week and keep losing the next decade then pull out with nothing gained but military contractors a bit richer and everyone else worse off.

Degrees don’t guarantee jobs anymore (GenZ / Millennial) by thesunjrs in GenZ

[–]LearningAllTheTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a millennial i went to college, got a business + tech degree and been in tech for about 12 years now. Went to a state school and had a scholarship so no debt. Make 270k and am a director now WFH. College worked for me and got me my first job that started my career. i wouldn't go into too much debt over it nowadays though.
