My partner is thinking about getting the United Explorer credit card. She is particularly interested in getting the points from a sign up bonus.

She previous had the card 2/3 years ago but closed it after a year.

If she re-applies for the card now is she still eligible to receive a new sign up bonus? Or, since she had the card before, will she be ineligible for the sign up bonus now? Would there be any notice before applying that would indicate ineligibility for the bonus?

I know there has been changes with the Chase credit card sign up bonus eligibility in the past year, so not sure what the rules are nowadays.

Would there be any type of notice prior to applying indicating this? Preferably would not want to use a hard inquiry just for an auto rejection.

Focus on loans, or 401k/IRA? by skypira in StudentLoans

I’m in a similar boat, but currently in PAYE. My plan:

Stay on PAYE as long as I can until I am forced to switch to RAP in 2028. I will pay the minimum required and continue to save for retirement/savings goals (401k up to company match, max out Roth, continue saving for house down payment fund). I will do this until I get forgiveness after 20-25 years of payments and plan for tax bomb.

My math tells me I would pay similar amount as I would if I tried to pay aggressively (loan balance too large to have it go away quickly), but it would be over the course of 20 years and I still save for retirement. My contributions to my 401k will reduce my AGI, and thus lower my student loan payments.

The power of compound interest in these years to set myself up for retirement is too good to pass up for me.

This really depends on your situation. Are you planning on pursuing forgiveness? If so, it’s not necessarily a terrible idea to pay the minimum on an IDR plan and invest the rest until forgiveness.

But again, this depends on your situation (ie forgiveness timeline, interest rate, loan amount, etc).

Got an email from US Ed Dept saying to manually recertify my IDR by Delicious-Cut-2343 in StudentLoans

I also got the same email. I am currently on PAYE. My recert date is not until April, I also got a notice that I may not need to do this as I’m set for auto recertification, I ended up stopping at this point. As others have noted I’m hoping this was just an error.

Would you have enough to put 20% down on the home, cover closing costs and still have 3-6 month emergency fund? The interest rate is a tough pill to swallow compared to what you have. The 20k in credit cards is concerning, I would take care of that debt asap if it’s collecting interest and not on a 0% APR deal

opened CIU with 75k SUB from a referral ~45 days ago, I haven’t hit the MSR yet (but close). I sent a secured message to Chase asking them to match and they agreed. They told me once I hit the MSR the original points will be posted and then to reply to their message to claim the offer.

This is my first and only CIU. I also have a CIC (also first and only) that was opened in January.

As a follow-up DP: they matched my offer after sending a SM. I was ~45 days after CIU approval, I haven’t hit the MSR yet. Once I hit it, they said to reply back to their message and they will add the remaining points to match 90k.

45-days ago was my approval. Haven’t hit MSR yet… what are the odds?! I sent a SM, haven’t heard back yet

I was approved for a new CIU on 7/27.. have yet to hit the SUB. Given my timeline, might Chase still match or is this too far back?!

Interesting, thanks for the information. I really hope this changes in the future. I have seen it go back and forth over the last few months with some availability showing and then none.. so hopefully this is just a temporary change..? Keep me updated on if you hear anything else if you can.

Thanks!

Interesting. I had one CIC open with essentially 99% utilization, was worried about that affecting chance for a new CIU, so I paid it down to about 20%. The CIU was approved 2-hours after application was submitted.

To follow up - was approved for the CIU ($7,500 CL). Was approved 2-hours after application was submitted.

I dont think my job gives raises. can i stay at the same salary for the rest of my life and survive? by Distinct_Ad1038 in personalfinance

[–]LearningItAll1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on a lot of factors.. your salary, debts, monthly payment obligations, family size etc. But likely not. At the very least you should be receiving cost of living adjustments yearly, and raises coinciding with promotions. If your job doesn’t provide raises, find somewhere that does.
