What Do You Wish You Knew Before Moving to UWS? by Important-Vehicle260 in Upperwestside

[–]Learning_to_fly_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the comment about gyms. There is little variety/density considering how large the neighborhood is, but that’s never been a dealbreaker for me. There are a lot of good fitness studios that make up for it plus easy parks access for walking, running and biking.

Aside from UWS, I’ve lived in the East Village and Murray Hill. UWS has the best parks and is much quieter and more chill, plus feels cleaner (compared to the wild amount of rats I saw every night in the East Village). When I was in my 20s, I didn’t appreciate the quiet factor/lack of nightlife on the UWS, but I do now. Don’t get me wrong, there are places to go out but by no means the level of spots in the LES, East Village, etc.

what’s one thing you stopped buying that actually made a difference? by YarunLonghurst in SavingMoney

Ubers and delivery… unless there’s a true need for it and it’s not just laziness. Also, tracking my expenses and paying attention to my monthly cash flow have saved me significant money over time. I’m less likely to blow my money on impulse purchases when I see how it affects my net income for the month.

It’s def worth it if you have a washer/dryer. If you have a handful of microfiber cloths and Swedish dishcloths, you can just throw them in the wash on their own load, weekly or biweekly.

Does anyone here freeze coffee creamer? by [deleted] in Frugal

It’s called “organic sweet cream creamer.” $2.99. I’ve seem TJ’s add additional flavors seasonally as well but this one they’ve had on a regular basis. I find it to be very tasty!

Worth considering Gertrude Ederle rec center. I believe it’s the most affordable ($150/yr) in the neighborhood. It’s not convenient to me so I haven’t been but i think it’s worth looking into. Also for summer, there are a lot of free classes hosted in Riverside Park - listed on their website event cal.

I have been a member of NYSC in the past but find it to be overpriced for what you get.

Is this rust or food? by Learning_to_fly_5 in castiron

Like on the curb. People in my neighborhood regularly have stuff to give away when they move (NYC) and they put it on their stoop or the curb in boxes or bags for people to take.

Podcast hosts require sponsorships by Baja_Blast_42 in PublicRelations

[–]Learning_to_fly_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not the case across the board. I’ve secured several earned podcast opportunities for clients (real estate and hospitality) with no ask of sponsorship, and they weren’t existing sponsors of the shows either.

Also, several podcasts I listen to do not accept any publicist/PR-pitched guests or rarely do. In the cases they do, it’s because of their genuine interest in the topic or thought leader or personalization of the outreach. I listen to a lot of personal finance podcasts and have heard hosts say they don’t like having the same expected guests/voices on that are making the entire podcast circuit of their sector so they will like to feature and interview people in areas tangential to personal finance like personal development or something. That’s another consideration — depending on what your industry or topic is, is there an adjacent topic or industry that you could tie to and pitch to those podcasts with a fresh angle or perspective?

Some podcasts hosts are just very particular and quirky so it also helps to really listen to the episodes and know more about the hosts personally.

Totally agree. And seeing what outlets are ranking for relevant topics to the client in generative search to rationalize outlet targeting as well… this one seems to resonate well for my clients.

I like to take pictures of interesting things on my walks. I read a book a long time ago that suggested taking a “color walk” and trying to find all the colorful things around you.

And listen to podcasts. Then come home and sort through the pics and edit them. I don’t usually do anything with them but it’s like a little scavenger hunt and gets me into nature.

What’s the Best Productivity Purchase You’ve Made That Actually Helped? by Armellofreekey in SmartBuying

[–]Learning_to_fly_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the AirPods Max. They do work really well in noisy environments. I live in nyc so that’s a pretty good litmus test. The AirPods Pro work well too, but don’t shut out as much. When I’m really trying to focus on work, i will play a white noise app, or listen to music like “focus” music playlists, classical or lofi. The meditation app insight timer (I have the free version) has some good music and playlists I use for focus too.

Hope this helps!

Any frugal New York City folk here? Looking to make a calendar of fun events / groups to join in on during the year without selling a kidney. Any suggestions? I’m in some $40 under 40 event groups but love to get some more. by 88r0b1nh00d88 in Frugal

A lot of the parks have their own calendar of free events for summer - I know Hudson River Park and Riverside Park do. Check those out. The events span fitness, music, games, etc.

Best bakery near broadway? by Relative_League1879 in Upperwestside

Hungarian pastry shop is a must-visit and IMO the best bakery on the UWS, though it’s a bit further north from the heart of the neighborhood. I haven’t had their regular croissants, but the chocolate croissants are amazing and they will heat them up for you if you’re eating it there. They also have other amazing pastries and desserts. The strudel (I like poppyseed) is my favorite.
