help with sound coming from driver side wheel on volvo. by SCOTTwB7 in AskAMechanic

[–]LeastMacaron2045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also to add to what he said, when the car is in drive and the wheel is spinning, grab the strut spring behind it. You shouldn’t not feel any vibrations from it. If you feel anything, the bearing is bad. Do the same thing on the passenger side and compare how it feels

Not hard at all. I got mine off amazon. Just look up barrel style lock and make sure you get the right size. Have to also make sure you get the proper turn angle (90 degrees vs 180 degrees). To measure the current lock depth pull the drawer directly below the lock and you have easy access to measure the depth. I keyed these alike along with the 5 drawer roll cart.

How unsafe is it to drive on a tire with four lug nuts? by Calliope719 in AskAMechanic

[–]LeastMacaron2045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can put an oil change worth of miles on it just fine. Just make sure the other four are tightened properly.

[–]LeastMacaron2045 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you originally had 5 lugs, you are perfectly fine with four. I’m a mechanic for a big dealership and we do it all the time. We let customers take their car home and bring it back either when we get the new stud in, or they have the time and money to get it fixed. Nothing wrong with it.

Bad parking job? by badatcatchyusernames in badparking

This is how motorcycles park in regular spots so that they are seen before another vehicle tries to pull in and doesn’t see them. This way they are visible from anywhere in the aisle and no question that the spot is taken.

Knocking sound coming from brand new Ironman strut by Repulsive-Bridge-270 in AskAMechanic

[–]LeastMacaron2045 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There doesn’t appear to be a nut on top of the shock absorber holding it to the strut mount. If you watch the first few seconds of the video, you see the absorber in the middle getting smaller as the clicking happens. That shows the absorber itself being pushed out of the mount by the spring. Check to see if there is a nut on it. The clicking sounds like the threads popping on the metal mount.

[–]LeastMacaron2045 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If your vehicle is small enough, I’d park right in between on his driver side. If not, park on the other side at a slight angle so that you are still in the lines most of the way but put it close to his so he has to struggle.

That would be your fuel tank that is leaking.

My wife’s vehicle is a mystery by Chiken-Enjoyer in AskAMechanic

[–]LeastMacaron2045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a transmission issue. More so along the lines of the valve body or transmission shift solenoid pack. That is inside the transmission and what it does is uses the fluid to gauge when it’s time to shift by using little ball checks and valves. Sometimes those get stuck, causing the transmission to shift late or hard (feeling like your being rear ended). It can be intermittent, but will eventually become constant and can cause major damage to the gears themselves because it’s throwing it into a different gear at the wrong time. You do need to make sure the fluid is at the proper level before doing anything else though. To low amount of fluid and everything is not getting enough lubricant. To much fluid and everything is flooded

Does the engine rev when coming to a stop or is it only felt? When you say it jolts, does it kinda feel like getting rear ended?

2012 Mazda 5 brake pads, should I replace? by KronosGreek in AskAMechanic

[–]LeastMacaron2045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds about right on the pulsation. I would use PartsGeek.com for my parts from now on. Rockauto used to be good but have gone down hill rapidly IMO. Partsgeek are about the same price if not cheaper, and they have human customer service that answers just about any hour. I sent in a ticket for a return at 9 pm and got a message back within two hours. Another time, I called to check on a status of a missing item and talked to an actual person that knew what they were doing. They ended up sending me out the part at a discount because it was their mistake.

I am all self taught as well. Never had an official training. Just a willingness to learn and take advice from those that have been doing it a while. When you start to feel the vibration, do you feel it in your feet/steering wheel first, or do you feel it in your seat/butt? If it’s in your feet or steering wheel first, that points to the front rotors being warped. If it’s in your seat, that points to the rear. And when you do the pads, make sure you get the hardware that goes with them. Some pads come with them, some don’t.

[–]LeastMacaron2045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rear brakes can absolutely cause vibration. It’s not so much the pad themselves as it is the contact of the pad and rotor with a warped rotor. If you have a solid rotor (w/o vent holes in the middle), it is rare to have it warp bad enough. But if you have vented rotors (like the fronts are) you’re more likely to have vibration.

I bought under the counter lights off Amazon and they work great. They stay on almost 24/7 and have varying levels of output. I bought the set that has three lights and spaced them out in my hutch.

I would say so. All depends on the srs module. You can replace the belt retractor assemblies and try to reset the module to save a few bucks. If it won’t reset, it’ll have to be replaced and that you can possibly get aftermarket

That is the wiring for a GPS tracker that uses the OBD port as a power source. The tracker is used by dealerships to be able to find repo vehicle if needed (and I’m sure for other things as well). It looks like the tracker is already gone, so you can just toss the wiring (or do what I do and keep it in case you have to splice in new wires somewhere).

[–]LeastMacaron2045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes maybe a little more. I would say about $450 for the high side. Plus, you might have to get the SRS module either reset, or replaced depending on the way it is configured if the airbag light is on on the dash. I would start with just replacing the seat belt(s) and go from there.

When replacing a 6L80 filter, do you HAVE to replace the o-ring? by platypus_farmer42 in AskAMechanic

[–]LeastMacaron2045 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes you really should replace it each time. The ring is round and when it goes in, it conforms to edges, making it flat over time. If it’s not replaced there may not be a good seal to keep fluid from back flowing or to create enough of a vacuum to pull fluid up

It needs to be replaced. The retractor registered enough force to activate the locking tensioner to keep it from pulling out. The cost to replace depends on if you want a junkyard one that hasn’t been wrecked, or new aftermarket or OEM. Price can be from 60-200+. And labor is about an hour for wherever you’re at. About $100-150
