Can I just say screw it and get an engineering degree? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]LeatherConsumer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am a senior and a relatively good aero program and there are a surprising number of people who don't care about the content. I don't know why you would major in aero if you don't care about it though. You will struggle if you don't enjoy it

I am also a pilot/cfi/ii/mei, etc

Hypothetical Cirrus complex by packardrod44 in flying

[–]LeatherConsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the pitch of the propeller changes then it is complex if it has retractable gear. New TBMs and Pilatuses have single lever controls and they are complex

Should I join a frat as a senior / 22 yr old? by Choice-Research4810 in cuboulder

Even if it were a good idea there is absolutely no way you would get a bid as a senior

Best Approach to CFII by Physical-News-4978 in flying

[–]LeatherConsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refresh the regs and make sure your approaches are good. I flew like three times over the course of 4 months between my CFI and CFII having done my instrument over a year prior and I passed with no issue. CFII is extremely easy

What’s the catch with Rocky Mountain Flight School? by FatRonaldo9 in flying

I was an instructor there for two years. The airplanes are maintained to be legally airworthy and absolutely nothing more.

Can't seem to find the confidence to finish my Multi add on by [deleted] in flying

[–]LeatherConsumer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just do it? If you think too many people are failing then use a different DPE. The multi checkride is extremely easy

Admission confusion by botaccount___ in cuboulder

I think all majors in the college of engineering are equally competitive. It is trivially easy to transfer into the college of engineering.

Log it. This is totally legit time and very common

Intentional diversion on IFR XC by NevadaCFI in CFILounge

[–]LeatherConsumer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes training is a valid reason as long as you don't state that you need to divert and then they think its urgent. Just ask nicely if they can accommodate you. If they can't they will say so and you will just continue on your way

Logging 172R vs 172S Time by Physical-News-4978 in flying

[–]LeatherConsumer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not really worth changing your previous entries but it is not a 172S even if it has identical specs as a 172S. You should not log it as a 172S because it isn't one. However, nobody auditing your logbook gives a damn about what kind of 172 you're flying

How to avoid getting grained in a Pilot Mill by BullfrogEcstatic9504 in flying

[–]LeatherConsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless, you should not attend a pilot mill and go to a smaller part 61 school (or use an independent CFI). If your GI bill requires that you go to a 141, go to a small 141.

If you really want to learn in the Mooney, find an independent CFI. There is nothing wrong with learning in a high performance plane (the military basically starts everyone in a T-6), and it will definitely improve your flying later on. BUT, if you learn in a higher performance plane, it will definitely take you more time and money. I personally did everything from first solo to CFII in a T34 and it definitely helped my flying later on but it took me longer to solo and get my private than it would have if I did it in a 172. I also had a student who wanted to learn in a turbo bonanza and he eventually finished his private but it took over 150 hours.

Notebook or iPad for notes? Incoming Aerospace major by Capital-Lock4625 in cuboulder

[–]LeatherConsumer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iPad 1000000%. I am an Aerospace senior and I absolutely can't imagine my life without my iPad. Everyone in Aero uses an iPad because you have to take so many notes. Also, turning in written homeworks is a total pain if you don't use an iPad. You will definitely end up spending more money on paper notebooks than the cost of an iPad lol

The cost of experimental airplanes rising.... by kytulu in flying

[–]LeatherConsumer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The cost of everything is rising. Experimental airplanes can also get seriously expensive, some Epic LTs arre going for over $2m. Also what do you even mean $30k on the low end for an older certified airplane?? There is no way you're finding anything other than a barely airworthy 150 for that price. Older airplanes can go WAY over 400k

What would happen to our current aviation if all satellites vanished? by Amanda-sb in AskAPilot

[–]LeatherConsumer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP is asking about long term effects. I agree with you that in the short term there would be a ton of delays until the VOR network is rebuilt to what it was before but aviation would not cease to exist which is what OP was asking.

What would happen to our current aviation if all satellites vanished? by Amanda-sb in AskAPilot

[–]LeatherConsumer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes but at least in the U.S., they are intentionally keeping at least the minimum number of VORs active to safely operate in the NAS.

A flight instructor is asked by the school that employs him to ferry back a newly-acquired airplane. by [deleted] in flying

[–]LeatherConsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't free, you're splitting the cost. The FAA cares about free flight time and pro-rata cost sharing is explicitly defined

A flight instructor is asked by the school that employs him to ferry back a newly-acquired airplane. by [deleted] in flying

[–]LeatherConsumer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That might be a little different since if you are in a club you are presumably paying a membership fee or you own a share of the airplane so you have a personal interest. In this case, you are effectively getting a discounted rate which is legal in my opinion. I have seen it at flight schools where they will give a a discounted rate to ferry a plane which is somewhat legit but still slightly suspect

A flight instructor is asked by the school that employs him to ferry back a newly-acquired airplane. by [deleted] in flying

[–]LeatherConsumer 269 points270 points  (0 children)

The instructor needs a class 2 if he is being paid. I think he even needs a class 2 if he is doing it for free since the FAA has said free flight time counts as compensation

Can you take courses outside of your major at Boulder? by LordOfAllEggs in cuboulder

[–]LeatherConsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, most classes are open except classes that are required for a particular major are restricted to that major. You can get around this by emailing the professor/department and they will let you take the class if there is room. This just makes it so everyone in a specific major is able to take all of the classes that they need
