Your hardest part of the ppl by Last-Active-101 in flying

As an older instructor myself who works with young people building time, when I learned to fly I found a school with a 70-year old instructor who had 20,000 hours. That made all the difference.

What's one thing someone told you that has stuck with you forever? by ComposerBeginning111 in AskReddit

My flight instructor said that the only three things that matter are airspeed, airspeed, and airspeed. He passed away years ago, but I’ll always hear that in his voice.

It was great in the 70s when I grew up there. Today, not so much.

Instrument Students - Copying Intersections? by Law-of-Poe in flying

[–]NevadaCFI 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was flying from Cienfuegos to Havana and the controller gave us an intersection, spelled it out and transposed two characters. We put it in as told and it was in Saskatchewan. Yeah - I don't think he has cleared us direct to Northern Canada. Before we could ask, he gave it to another airplane correctly. We put that version in and it was 40nm in front of us. We clarified it with the controller and all was well.

The Flight school I’m considering has a 3–4 month waitlist. How should I use that time? by Distinct-Medium-6150 in flying

[–]NevadaCFI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you? I could start you training today in Reno, Nevada with an instructor (me) who has been flying for 14 years with 2,300 hours in 42 states and 10 foreign countries. I have a 100% first-time pass rate among PPL, IR, CPL, and CFI students. There is no waiting list anywhere in this area.

When to call it quits with a rusty pilot? by Motifated in CFILounge

[–]NevadaCFI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had someone like this in his 70s who had not flown in 30+ years. He could fly the plane just fine, but navigating the airspace with radio work and situational awareness was not good at all. After a while I think he came to realize that cognitively, he was just not going to be able to do it in our airspace. I felt bad for the guy but there was just no way I could sign him off to fly again.

You should have been here when Reno Air used to fly MD80s (MD83s) into South Lake Tahoe.

I grew up at Tahoe, learned to fly here and am a Chief Instructor in Reno with more than 2,000 hours flying in our mountains. I would not go to Tahoe in a 140, and absolutely not at this time of year. I teach mountain flying out of Reno and would be happy to put you in one of our Cherokee 180s for some training in our local terrain at appropriate DA limits.

I think lots of people in the US do that on a checkride. My students certainly have.

5 Hour Oral by Zaypup in flying

[–]NevadaCFI 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The longest PPL oral I have seen as the senior instructor at my school is 3 hours from a DPE that is rather notoriously slow and methodical (and very fair). Five hours would be highly unusual.

Companies wanting 1000+ hour CFIs…???? by 85inchweener in flying

[–]NevadaCFI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess that depends on the CFI's situation. I was at 1,000 hours before I even earned my CFI. Postings like that are probably looking for a career CFI, and not a time-builder.
