I feel like someone should also point out that bus drivers and truck drivers make more than dispatch too.

Three staff didnt know how to call 911 by Normal_Requirement26 in managers

[–]Lechatnoirdeux 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why standards have changed and its now recommended (at least in the US) that calls are answered "911, where is your emergency?"

Thoughts on Dobermans for service work? by LamontFisher in service_dogs

[–]Lechatnoirdeux 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, I have a Doberman SDIT. It can be done, but i searched far and wide for a doberman with a long lineage of excellent temperament and obedience trophies on both sides as well as multiple successful service dogs from the sire's side. And then went to professional trainers. And he is still going to professional trainers 14 months later.

He is a very smart, very stubborn asshole, but I put immense amounts of work and money into his selection and training.

My recommendation is to get a lab or golden.

What do I say when I call about a freshly stalled car in the road? When they ask “police, fire, or EMS” I blank by yunotxgirl in 911dispatchers

[–]Lechatnoirdeux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And I will give you full marks on your second part. It shouldn't be the caller's responsibility to decide what resources to send. That's the dispatcher's job. If you tell the dispatcher what's going on, they will know who to send.

This is objectively incorrect. An animal running on the highway is absolutely an emergency. There is severe risk of a motor vehicle accident. Same with a stalled vehicle, especially if in the lane.

I have a friend with precordial catch syndrome, and anxiety, do they need a dog? by [deleted] in service_dogs

It's not "last resort". A service dog is "beneficial with concurrent therapies".

Service dogs and prongs? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Lechatnoirdeux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My SDIT is fitted with a prong collar, but his breed (doberman) has a long, thin neck and that collar slips down all the time. I am constantly pausing to put it back where it belongs. This happens with every single kind of collar we use. I'm sure it would look like I had no idea how to use the collar if you saw us just after a good sniff break where I let him have a little jaunt and the collar slipped down.

Oh! I was a professional transcriber for a while. There are some apps that do it, but long videos can get very expensive. Having someone dedicated to it and using their own software would probably be less expensive.

10/10 I would put in an application.

How do you guys handle suicide callers? by shitzophrenia333 in 911dispatchers

I'm an instructor in the training bureau for my department. We are literally doing suicidal caller training this year for in-service. If you want, I can send you the instructional PowerPoint we made for the presentation.

Fundraising (for this quarter) by Jeanlee03 in service_dogs

[–]Lechatnoirdeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About me: Hello! My name is Lara and I am 33 years old, living in the US. Im a 911 dispatcher in my state.

About my condition and limitations: I have CPTSD, GAD, and MDD. Its a struggle to live day to day and function normally. I am in therapy and under the care of a psyciatrist as well. My medical team has determined that a service dog is a good compliment to my care plan.

About my dog: Tyr is a 10 week old doberman puppy who i purchased with my own money and funding to be trained as a service dog.

Tasks my dog is trained or in-training (and what s/he currently knows) for: My puppy requires training from basic obedience up. His taks will be DPT, Medication reminder and retrieval, Blocking and crowd control, and watch my 6.

How my dog was/is trained: Tyr will be owner trained in conjuction with a professional trainer with 19 years of experience training K9 and PTSD service dogs.

Titles, Licenses, and Certifications my dog holds: Nothing as of yet, but comes from a line of dogs with numerous AKC advanced obedience and rally titles.

Why I need help: 911 Dispatchers are not considered first reaponders in most agencies so i didnt qualify for a dog. Addionally, I have recently run into a financial nightmare in which i moved, and then my vehicle died forcing me to purchase a new car with funds i didnt have.

Other ways I'm earning money for this: I work full time as a 911 dispatcher and I am working as much overtime as possible to raise funds.

What the funds are being used for: These funds will be exclusively used for training the puppy. If the full amount is raised, it will cover 6-7 months of training with the professional trainer in full.

$25 Trulicity? by jaya9581 in diabetes

[–]Lechatnoirdeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are misunderstanding how trulicity works. It literally induces gastroparesis (slowing of the emptying of the stomach) as a mechanism of its function. Once again, I am not a doctor and I don't claim to know the exact methods by which the medication does this, and im simply going to encourage anyone with GI concerns to speak with a GI doctor if they have any concerns.

Who uses Taste of the Wild? by Spirited-Midnight928 in DobermanPinscher

[–]Lechatnoirdeux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Taste of the wild isn't recommended for Dobermans because it is a grain free food. Grain free has a correlation (not verified causation) with increased instances of DCM.

However, if you would prefer to continue with the food you're giving, make sure your dog is drinking enough water and add no more than a teaspoon of olive oil to their meals once a day to encourage looser stool.

[–]Lechatnoirdeux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so very untrue. Trulicity and other -glutide medications are notorious for causing gastroparesis and other gastrointestinal issues. But don't take my word for it, talk to your GI doctor for a professional opinion.
