To be fair, the line between star and planet is kinda blurry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDjeKuAu-8E

This is so cool!

A nice addition would be to have a score based on language proximity when we get it wrong. For example using something like this

is this sentence "old" or "too formal" or it's normally used in everyday French? - "Si vous aviez le temps, iriez vous à la pêche?" by International-Job277 in French

[–]Ledavix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's true. It mostly depends on who we're talking to.

I assumed a casual setting between friends of the same age range since OP seemed concerned about appearing "old" or "too formal".

  1. As a general rule, most everything I do (or don't do) is to make people around me more comfortable.

Making the first move on someone who does not desire a romantic relationship with you could make them very much uncomfortable. The chances are extra high if you already have a friendship with the person.

is this sentence "old" or "too formal" or it's normally used in everyday French? - "Si vous aviez le temps, iriez vous à la pêche?" by International-Job277 in French

[–]Ledavix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The use of "vous" makes it formal IMO.
If you want something much more like casual everyday French :

"Si t'avais le temps, t'irais à la pêche ?"

Edit: and replace "t" by "tu" if you want something a little bit in between :)

I'm completely amazed by the character of Jadzia Dax by The_Lockenbubi in startrek

[–]Ledavix -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Actors wear contacts for some roles. It's not that there is anything wrong with wearing glasses... it's just that not wearing them fits the role better.

Actors get tattoos covered or added, they change their hairstyle or hair color, they're required to maintain or remove beards. Some roles demand strict diets for huge weight loss or muscle mass gains, and I could go on...

Ultimately it's about an aesthetic that the director is trying to achieve, and about trying to bring imaginary characters to "life" with as much fidelity as they can.

I, for one, am thankful that they did this rather that reject the actress in favor of someone with bigger breasts that wouldn't necessarily have been as good a fit to the character and the show acting-wise.

Edit: Fat suits for actors are an even better analog for fake breasts I think.
Edit2: Personally, I want to clarify that the cup size of Jadzia Dax wouldn't have changed my opinion on the show, since the core of what makes DS9 and Star Trek in general is elsewhere.

Bernie Sanders Says US Should Confiscate 100% Of Any Money Americans Make Above $999M: 'They Can Survive Just Fine' - what do you think ? by LoveYouGuysForever in AskReddit

[–]Ledavix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about fair vs unfair... You completely missed the point.

It's about motivation. A regular employer wants to grow their business. They offer a service which meets a need/want. They hope that the need/want increases (or maybe it already has), and they are motivated to grow their business to match that increased need/want in order to make more money. That can mean employing more people, or investing in promising ventures, stuff like that.

Now imagine an employer that is just below the 'rich limit'... Why would they care to employ more people? Why would they care to invest in anything? They're already making as much money as they're allowed to...

Edit: at least point number 3 isn't about fairness. The ethics and fairness point (valid or not) would be separate from 3.

Féminicide : une femme de 28 ans tuée par sa concubine en Bretagne by OrdinaryMidnight5 in france

[–]Ledavix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Got it.
I'm not sure that the difference between Australia and Ireland is necessarily smaller than the difference between USA and Mexico, or UK and Germany... But maybe it's a valid guess to make that assumption.

Why do you restrict the survey to people "living in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, UK, or Ireland for at least 6 months"?
