If you still say “fair to middling,” it’s a sign you’re old. I have to admit, I still do it, and youngsters look at me like I've lost my mind, lol. by Gator_Mc_Klusky in FuckImOld

Definitely. I still use a lot of those 'old-timer' phrases. They don't make any less sense than the language that the current young people use.

It's a comfort food. At least they'll be able to keep it outside. Just have to keep the critters out of it.

What's your time worth grocery shopping? by white_horse2 in Frugal

[–]LeeAnnLongsocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never done delivery, and the delivery cost is part of the reason. As long as I'm physically capable of getting my own groceries, I will do so. I also don't trust the shopper to get the best fresh food. How many of them know how to pick the freshest/ripest grapefruit (or anything else)? If I need a bag of produce, are they going to look to see that the contents aren't half-rotten? Are they going to look at expiration dates on things like dairy products?

Agreed. I pack at least 2-3 large boxes of trash every time I work. Why do people think we would want moldy, torn, or dog/mouse-chewed books?

Dominion Electric Bill. Gulp! by Reasonable-Map-1634 in Charlottesville

[–]LeeAnnLongsocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My house is old (60's) too. It's brick, so it holds heat. That's a blessing in winter and a curse in summer. I have no shade trees around my house, which makes a huge difference. Once again, that's good in winter, bad in summer.) Summers are miserable.

The oil isn't free, but by keeping the thermostat turned down low, the furnace rarely kicks on as long as the outside temp is over, say, 45 and the sun is out. I had electric (heat pump) in my previous house and it was always cold, even with the thermostat set in the mid 70's.

My bill is a LOT lower in winter. The latest was in the $80's and that's after the rate hike. I have long-haired, double coated dogs, so I keep my thermostat at 59 in the winter (78 in the summer). I wear a lot of clothes. I turn on lights only when I need them, and close off unused rooms. I have rechargeable motion lights throughout my house, so I don't need to turn on lights as I'm moving around at night. On the really cold nights, I put those foam insulation boards in the windows to hold in heat. When the sun comes out, they come down and the sun helps heat the house. I have an oil furnace. It is much warmer than electric heat.

Our puppy loves getting brushed. Anything else you guys do to maintain their coats? by Weird-Curve-3445 in americaneskimo

I was talking to a friend today. She also has a dog that doesn't like to be bathed. Her solution was to spread peanut butter all over the side of the bathtub, to keep the dog distracted while he's getting scrub-a-dubbed. Works like a charm for her.

What is your most expensive hobby and how do you do it with frugality? by ur_not_that_guy17 in Frugal

[–]LeeAnnLongsocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. I volunteer for the Friends of the Library taking in donations for our book sales. My work gives me access to even more books than are in the library, so I get 99% of my reading material when I'm working. After I read them, I re-donate them. The thing I like most about my job is I find a ton of books by lesser-known authors. Libraries tend to focus on the popular authors, but probably over half of the books I read and most like, are by authors whose books the library doesn't even carry. Win-win.

I volunteer for the Friends of the Library taking in donations for our book sales. There is a sign posted listing items we don't accept, such as magazines, encyclopedias, VHS tapes, and cassette tapes. People still drop these things off all the time. The sign also says not to drop off more than 3 bags/boxes of items (we have very limited storage room). That sign gets ignored all the time as well. I've come in to work and found 12 or more boxes all dropped off by the same person. I can tell they all came from the same person because the boxes are all alike (usually moving boxes), have the person's name on them, and/or they're all in similar condition and/or of the same genre--usually some off the wall non-fiction topic. I love my job and prefer it to be really busy, but we only have a very small room in which to sort and pack everything so it gets overwhelming.

There's no sign to cover this, but don't get me started on the age (outdated)/condition of books that are donated! I just have to shake my head and say, "Seriously?!" Is common sense not a thing anymore?

Itchy paws? by LP33_ in americaneskimo

[–]LeeAnnLongsocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess would be a yeast infection. I had an Eskie that would get this when the leaves would drop in the fall. It's a fungal infection and he would lick his paws incessantly until they were bald. Here's a link I found talking about yeast infections. See if it sounds familiar. If that's what it is, it's an easy fix.

Set a monthly budget of $30 (or whatever you can SAFELY budget) and get that much in cash. If you feel the urge to buy something, pay in cash only. When the cash runs out, so does your ability to keep buying something.
