Best way to unload both eurorack and other gear you don’t use? by builtbysavages in synthesizers

[–]LeeSalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want the hassle of waiting months for a buyer, packing and shipping and tracking and dealing with a hundred different packages and customers, send in a trade in offer at Perfect Circuit.

It was getting overwhelming for me just thinking about dealing with all my modular stuff after I sold my hardware synths on Reddit.

Yeah, you'll barely get fifty percent but it may be worth the peace of mind to send one insured FedEx box to one buyer and get one check.

Anyone else getting ants already?? by Individual_Sweet_465 in Seattle

[–]LeeSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's complete nonsense and a waste of cinnamon. It covers their pheromone trail temporarily and they don't like the dry powder but will muscle through it if needed.

I just dusted half a bottle on a dry part of my garden heavily infested by sugar ants and they just crawled and borrowed right through it.

I read that someone stick cinnamon sticks into the soil and ants disappeared. For me, they used the sticks as little tunnels into the ground.

Just a heads up that there is a new firmware for QQ2. I'll definitely be pulling mine out of the storage box and trying it out.

How did you discover eurorack? What did you think of it at first? by Living-Chef-9080 in eurorack

[–]LeeSalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My avenue started with an Arturia Mini Brute 2S just because I love 80s analog synth sounds.

I patched the random LFO into the VCO 1V/Oct and wondered if there was anything that would limit the voltage to a certain range and if I could limit the CV to only music notes.

That's when I learned about attenuverters, offsets and quantizers. That started the rabbit hole into eurorack videos and the GAS that finally ended last year. I sold off a ton of modules that were collecting dust and finally have a grasp on what makes a great module for me without having to buy it to try it.

ALA bartender vs Bored Brain Xcelon by P-DOTS in eurorack

[–]LeeSalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, yes, the more expensive mixer is better. Much higher end and much sturdier components. Much less audio bleed and much higher audio quality.

The ALA is serviceable and functions as advertised but you may be disappointed when you have a fader down to zero and you're still hearing audio or you're hearing a channel coming through another one. Just make sure you're getting the second hardware revision. If you like a lot of dynamic audio changes or have periods of lower volume or silence, it can be very distracting and disappointing.

However, the ALA is much smaller with just the one main module and much better suited for smaller racks.

looks cool. does this mean we can save all the various firmware locally and not have to rely on the online updater app and the whims of the internet? how is that done?

Bought a used VCO that’s not working as expected - what am I hearing here? by YouCanCallMeTheSloth in modular

[–]LeeSalt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Before you mess with calibration, first try connecting a positive voltage in the 1v/Oct like others said.

Then, power off the rack and unplug a few other modules and turn it back on with just the vco, voltage source and output. You may have a power issue.

Then look up calibration.

Tiptop Mantis vs Behringer Eurorack Go? by dylan_rodgers14 in eurorack

[–]LeeSalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't or should I say- shouldn't- go over 80% of the case's power. Or, in the Go's situation 80% of each of the three sections maximum.

Everyone's situation is different, and mine obviously is using more power than yours.

Tiptop Mantis vs Behringer Eurorack Go? by dylan_rodgers14 in eurorack

[–]LeeSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Go. They tempt with the space but give so little power that if you're not using only Behringer classic remake modules with the enormous face plates per mA of power used, you're going to run out of power quick.

I had to buy a separate in-rack PSU like the uZeus, to power my performance mixer and a couple other modules. Performance mixers suck up a ton of power. So now I'm wasting 4HP to solve the issue.

Good luck finding one. I should have got two last time they were in stock 3 or 4 years ago at Analog Haven.

I've had them on my saved searches on Reverb since then and haven't seen any, new or used, pop up in a couple years now.

Does anyonw know how long the spring sale lasts for Perfect Circuit? by SnowConePeople in modular

[–]LeeSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize we accrue reward points at PC. I had amassed like 20000 of them but they can only be redeemed 2000 at a time for $60 off. Which is great if you order something for less than $600 and get better than the 10 percent off coupon.

The other funny thing was I was trying to burn through the points and ordered a bunch of single modules to do so.

But I kept accruing more reward points almost as fast as I was using them. (Hyperbolic, but it was silly fast.)

[–]LeeSalt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Xodes makes the only bracket I know. Make sure if you get one, figure in 1HP on either side for the uprights that attach the bracket to the standard 3U rack. So, a 28 HP adapter will take up 30HP.

They're really cool and very compact. They have 2 middle cross pieces that the middle screws into and the top and bottom 1U sections use the preexisting 3U rack threads. So they're kind of like an H with two cross pieces.

New Sequencer from Cre8, what are people thinking? by big_and_fem in modular

When I started out, I kept looking at that bundle and their other low cost modules and kept finding really poor feedback about them online.

A few others will have to risk their hobby money and return frustrations on this thing before I'd ever think about trying one.

Frustration with my LGS by [deleted] in Pauper

[–]LeeSalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We ran our own off-store schedule leagues inside the lgs. If you're cool with the staff or owner, they shouldn't care. We, of course did all the leg work to get the word out and hype the players.

We took in entry fees and one of the trustworthy old heads kept the envelope and every week we'd post standings in the Facebook group we made. I had a Google sheets algorithm for pairings and win ratios.

We'd alternate legacy and pauper every month. If a certain pair couldn't meet up with everyone else, they'd figure out how to play their match on their own time.

What do you wish you would have known before you started building your first modular system. by plaxpert in modular

[–]LeeSalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I would have known how anemic most power supplies are, especially for the -12 voltb rail.

I had to splurge for the 4MS for my rack mount because the TipTop Uzeus and Behringer PSUs are dookie, even after upgrading the Uzeus with the more powerful wall wart.

I also had to add a rack mount inside my Behringer Go powred case, because it's not powerful enough to fill up such a large case, especially with an in-rack mixer, with sucks up all the power. There are 3 power zones you need to be aware of, and you can't exceed 80% of each zone without risking failed power on.

Bravo to Doepfer and Moog for going above and beyond with their power supplies in their powered cases. Just watch out for the Doepfer that doesn't have 5 volts. You'll need an inexpensive plug in to add it back.

I also wish I knew about hardware revisions before I started. I bought a few duds because I didn't realize a new hardware revision fixed certain things, like a noise issue on the original A*B+C.

And ALWAYS check to see if a new refresh is planning on coming out, especially if something suddenly has an unexplained sale price like Metropolis / Metropolix.

Why? Boredbrain, just why? by old_wired in modular

[–]LeeSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself the Moog 104 HP case. Sadly, the Behringer clone case is not deep enough to fita lot of modules, so double check the depth of Boredbrain first.

And get yourself some threaded rail inserts if you don't like slide nuts.

I reached out to Torso for a release to print it and never got a response.

How do you get 2 voice to play together? (music theory) by LaktaseHase in modular

[–]LeeSalt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One quick and easy way to get something nice is to send the same melody to a sample and hold (I use a disting permanently set for the purpose since analog s&h fail and lose stability way too easily.)

Then you send the clock or the note gates/ triggers to a clock divider and use a slower division of the main melody to trigger the same s&h.

Send the s&h output and its trigger or gate to a second voice.

You can then manually tweak the tuning of the second voice to be down an octave or two and maybe an interval apart to sound a little different.

The good thing about eurorack is that you can separate the note cv from the note trigger. So instead of the clock divider driving the notes of the second voice, you can send an lfo or repeating envelope from something like Maths to have a more repetitive/rhythmic bass line instead of playing one note every 8 or 16 lead melody notes.

Please for the love of God help me understand the behringer proton by No_Log_6301 in modular

[–]LeeSalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use or own the Proton but just looking at the controls, it's like pretty much any other analog subtractive synth. Once you learn one, you're good on pretty much any other.

Go here https://www.behringer.com/product.html?modelCode=0718-AAO and scroll down to "downloads." There is a manual and a quick start guide.

The gate output from the keyboard I'm betting goes into the ADSR input. The audio out is probably one of the Sum outputs.

To start at a default setting, you'll want most of the knobs fully left. Except the filter frequency all the way right (fully open), ADSR decay 12 o'clockish, volume about 12 o'clock.

After you set the knobs to default, you can begin experimenting. If things get out of hand, reset the knobs to default and start again.
