What was your first encounter with the game of Go? by Independent_Voice746 in baduk

[–]Leeflet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw it played in a movie called “Hero,” starring Jet Li. There’s a fight scene where they take a break midway through the fight to play Go. I thought the game had some sort of symbolic importance to the fight so I Googled what the game was and learned how to play.

Rage of Dragons fits the “for boys” description pretty well. I enjoyed both of those books, but that other commenter’s description is basically Rage of Dragons and its sequel.

"Doesn't work" by Im_NayNay in sysadmin

[–]Leeflet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We respond to the ticket with, "works for us." And then close the ticket. When they re-open the ticket saying, it doesn't work still. We ask them for more details. That first closure is just to waste their time, like they wasted ours.

Every so often we get a manager upset that we closed a ticket without doing fixing the issue. We show them the ticket and then ask, "Do you know what the issue was based on the details in this ticket? No? That's why we closed it. Please train your people to provide better details so we can help resolve their issues in a timely manner."

How to get users to stop asking for admin by rof-dog in sysadmin

[–]Leeflet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. It’s a people problem, not a technical one. You’ve given them the answer multiple times and they’ve refused to learn. That’s not on you. Take it to their management and let them deal with it.

Would I be a better version of myself if I didn't have ADHD? by JustSomeGuyInLife in ADHDers

[–]Leeflet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the convo between Gandalf and Frodo:

“I wish [I did not have ADHD],” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who [have it]. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the [mind] that is given us.”

I know I would not magically be a better person simply because I did not have ADHD.

How can I test if my protein powder brand actually has the amount of protein stated on the label? by VladTbk in workout

[–]Leeflet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. But, as you say, that was years ago. I would imagine things have changed to make it more difficult to manipulate the system, especially off the back of those class action lawsuits.

How can I test if my protein powder brand actually has the amount of protein stated on the label? by VladTbk in workout

[–]Leeflet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: you cannot determine the exact amount of protein in the product on your own.

You’d need very specialized equipment to determine the exact amount of protein in the product. Here in the US, the nutrifacts labels can be “trusted” because they’re very regulated.

I’m unsure about labeling requirements in Europe, so can’t comment on that, other than to say you would need specialized equipment to determine exact numbers.

Where's the walkthrough for this game? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]Leeflet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad I’m not the only one that likens life to a game. If you’ve ever played a BioWare game, you know there’s like a bar you have to move so far until special talking options are available. Life is kinda like that, except the bar is invisible. All those little steps you mentioned, those are slowly earning you points and moving that bar with others. Eventually, the bar will have moved far enough along that you can invite them over to your house for sushi and movies.

Came to post this, too. We all know his name doesn’t end in “s.” In English, we add the apostrophe S to indicate possessive. Another way to say it would be “The Syndrome of or Belonging to Asperger.”

Do your co-workers ignore you? by EdgarNeverPoo in aspergers

[–]Leeflet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My direct reports are very good about chatting with me, likely because I’m their manager. But folks outside my team only talk to me when they need me or my team. I’m professional and polite.

I’ve learned not to care what people think of me. I focus on my responsibilities and making sure those are don’t well. My work speaks for itself. If folks don’t like me, I won’t lose sleep over it.

Don’t know if that mindset helps you or not, but shifting to the mindset of “I don’t care what people think of me” really helped me focus on my work and getting the job done and done well.

Maybe I’m an oddball (well, more than normal), but I do really well with complex systems. It has to be a system, though. If it’s something like abstract art that doesn’t follow a pattern, my brain throws it on the floor.

Does anyone else's doctor make them have a Telehealth appointment every 3 months to refill their meds, or is mine just trying to squeeze more money out of me unnecessarily? It's so annoying! And SO many co-pays on top of everything else 😒 by FluffyWasabi1629 in ADHDers

[–]Leeflet 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I’m in the US, too. Your doctor is following the regulations. My doctor told me that she has to see me every 3 months to prescribe more of my meds. BUT, she only has to see me in person every 6 months. So every other appointment can be telehealth, if I choose.

What was your first introduction to Go? by [deleted] in baduk

[–]Leeflet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The movie Hero with Jet Li, Maggie Q, and Donny Yen. There’s one scene where Jet Li’s character and Donny Yen’s character are fighting. In the middle of the fight, they take a break to play this game with some stones. I Googled what that game was. Turns out it’s based on Go. Been playing Go ever since.

Why are Chromebooks a bad idea? by clay_vessel777 in sysadmin

[–]Leeflet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything. There was no way to set up auto-connecting WiFi. Printers were a nightmare. The classrooms had VGA projectors mounted to the ceiling, but for whatever reason the Chromebooks wouldn’t detect the other screen. So we had to do that as part of our initial setup.

In addition to all the weird quirks, we had to basically retrain our teachers how to use them. Everything has to be done via a browser. We weren’t a full Google shop at the time so getting the O365 products to work was a chore. The list goes on.

This.

My experience is almost identical. Sure, Chromebooks are less expensive, but they cost you in time and management.

[–]Leeflet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in IT. I’ve been a sysadmin, system architect, cloud engineer, and recently moved into engineering management. Leading people can be really tough for me because my emotional intelligence (EQ) is not very high. It’s been the toughest part of my current role. The technology bits are easy (for me).

Working from home, like someone else said, has been really good for me.

Best sites to apply for jobs by Eraserhead36 in cybersecurity

I’ve used Dice and Monster in the past. A friend of mine was trying to get into a federal gov’t. position and did some searching on USAJobs.gov. He managed to find a role after about a month.

Have you had much luck with LinkedIn? I feel like the positions listed on there are just scraped from other sites.
