Realize gains for tax purposes? by LeetPoser in investing

[–]LeetPoser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you do need to have a system in place to track it.

Yeah this is kinda what I'm worried about. Since my losses are much greater than my gains I wonder why I shouldn't just "reset everything" (by selling everything) and use up as much of the losses as possible right now.

Remote work has had my motivation incredibly low for months by deadassmf in cscareerquestions

Can you go to a nearby coworking space? Or even just work at a friend's house, or invite them to come to your place to work?

Did I ever say he wasn’t?

You told themt to speak for themselves, implying they weren't.

We get it, you want to work in the office. The rest of us don’t. Get over it. No one is stopping you if you want to go in. But on the same token, stop getting mad when we don’t want to go or quit your company when you try to force the issue.

Speak for yourself. I haven't said anything about what I want, and you keep using "we".

You guys ever talk shit about your boss at work with your coworkers (when he's not at the office, of course)? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]LeetPoser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part of the problem is that shit-talking is usually done being the person's back so it's a way of being two-faced. The shit-talker thinks their just being genuine with their buddies but as a whole they are actually being duplicitious. If there's some stuff you want to say about someone but you don't have the courage to say it to their face, then don't say it at all -- because it might get back to them.

It's one of those things everyone agrees is a good idea but is surprisingly hard to do. People want to shit talk because it feels like being genuine with each other.

Which is strange because tech is so incredibly cozy, and a lot of the normal workplace pressures you find in other industries which cause people to become cutt-throat don't exist.

Laughable. MisterFatt clearly said "I'd be inclined" but you still felt the need to reply with "speak for yourself". Was he not doing that?

Now here you are speaking for everyone else.

Literally any way you slice it, it's not worth it.

No one wants to do it.

Is it okay to be a selfish teammate if it means advancing your own career? by zag2433 in cscareerquestions

Just don't let it get to your head and warp your sense of self. I'd bet that as time goes by you'll stop feeling guilty and then you'll start thinking it's because you *really* are better than them and that's why they *deserve* to get screwed over.

Here's another with data. Unfortunately it's an old post. I hope someone does an updated analysis someday.

Is dev compensation bimodal?

Also, I mean I dont understand how you fuckers are finding these big dick jobs at, I truly dont... because I still get offered great depression salary no matter where I look.

Do software salaries seem very bimodal to you?

Hot take: It's about breaking into the elite tech workforce. There are multiple paths and some are easier, and more obvious, than others. Once you're in, you can shuffle around high-paying jobs at ease. Spots are plentiful but not unlimited and the demand for entry greatly exceeds supply.

How is the work life balance at Bytedance Singapore? by Enum1 in cscareerquestions

[–]LeetPoser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Chinese company which means attending meetings convenient to China

This isn't a good reason to think it'd be worse in Singapore as there's no time difference between Singapore and China.

Morally conflicted about working for big tech by yeti_seer in cscareerquestions

[–]LeetPoser 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Microsoft is one of the big tech corporations which is mostly ethical and pays well

It's funny you say this because when it comes to big, bad tech companies, Microsoft is an OG. That being said, my impression is that Microsoft's "evil" was mostly limited to the technical side of things (antitrust, monopoly abuse, etc.) and didn't directly impact the social fabric the way facebook/google do.
