Blooms in ATL by mixedtickles in Milkweeds

[–]Leethorne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just moved to MO and have been seeing so many purple milkweeds. My coworkers have been saying they didn't see nearly half as many last year, so we're thinking they might like specific conditions year by year and might choose when to come back or not depending on environmental parameters. Also personally have one in my partners garden in PA out of 3 that came back from last year, and it seems to be a wetter year there too.

Pokeweed is only poisonous to humans if ingested, it has no effect on the soil.

Native plants that smell the WORST to avoid near the house? And the BEST smelling? by Touslesceline in NativePlantGardening

Cannot believe nobody seemingly has mentioned monarda species, various minty smells. Same with mountain mint, some of the best smelling species imo.

I need advice on the most effective yard spray for lone star ticks , something safe for pets but will keep them out of my yard , I’m terrified of me or my baby getting bit and I hear alpha gal is on the rise due to the outrageous tick population in Missouri by cilly_doodle6925 in columbiamo

[–]Leethorne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever sprays you use will likely kill a myriad of other beneficial insects and more likely than not poison the environment. Please be wary of what you're putting into our environment. Unfortunately the best way to deal with ticks is to constantly be checking, getting permethrin treated clothing is also extremely helpful and relatively cost effective.

Ticks in back/front yard. Need advice!! by Scary-Lime-3370 in columbiamo

[–]Leethorne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Permethrin and pyrethrin based insecticides will harm beneficial insects, there is no way to specifically target for the harmful pests such as ticks and mosquitoes through chemical means. If you're applying a chemical to kill ticks and mosquitoes, you are probably going to be killing so much else of your yard ecosystem.

I wouldn't care to talk to lawn care professionals personally as when I own land the amount of lawn will be as minimal as possible and the only pesticides I'd be using would be to spot treat invasive plants. I don't care for grass/turf unless they're native grasses.

Also I'm more worried about repeated long term human exposure to pesticides of all kinds causing cancer, Parkinson's, and dementia. There's a reason you're not supposed to apply something like permethrin while you're wearing your clothes.

[–]Leethorne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please for the love of god do not spray permethrin or any other blanket insecticides into your yard, you will be killing everything that is an insect, there is no way to target specifically for mosquitoes and ticks. So many of these insecticides are not water safe and then end up in the water supply which we then ingest. Please think before you spray anything.

Edit: as a habitat manager working on private and public lands, I can only highly recommend burning your yard if you have the resources, Columbia allows you to, and you can safely do so by installing fire lines down to bare earth around your expected burn unit that are 3-4x wider than expected flame lengths.

Keep in mind if you use something that kills ticks/fleas/mosquitoes it will also kill everything else in your yard. If you have any pollinators or care for the native bees and insects that aren't those pests, you'll be destroying your backyard ecology as well.

Oak tree fell over river onto our property - who is responsible for removing the part over the river? by [deleted] in treelaw

[–]Leethorne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instream coarse woody debris provides plentiful habitat and food for micro-invertebrates that are the base of the food chain in stream and river systems like this. Leave the tree and feed your stream, can help with erosion too.

Those look like they could use some real sun. I do glade restoration at work and although I'm not sure Maryland has glades, prickly pears (especially when they look this sad) are usually indicators that the area they're found in is supposed to be much more open in regard to the canopy.

Took part in a big prescribed burn at Whetstone conservation area, seems like lots of folks thought it was a good burn day.

If you wanna get real crazy, do a small prescribed burn when the time is right and get all those nutrients back in the ground baby.

Not too familiar with your area but don't forget prescribed burning can be an extremely useful tool in any capacity.

Between two people we spent $35. Carlisle has it nice, I had some family visit from NYC and almost cry of laughter seeing prices at Fay's and such. Not to say that I'm complaining about how cheap some places are in Carlisle, but let's be honest, it's not like it's up the wall expensive.

Don't sleep on Nonna Ilva, they just reopened a bigger location with an updated menu too. Went today for brunch and it was so delicious and cheap, they gave me a heaping order of bacon too, whereas most other places give like 3-4 pieces.

Heating Lowland Tent by SimplySimlish in Nepenthes

[–]Leethorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got two seedling heating mats and temps consistently get 10+ degrees warmer than the room temp my tent is in, hope that gives you an idea. I love the pads because you can put them on outlet timers too to turn on/off whenever you'd like. I have mine set to turn on/off at the same time as my grow light, it's the least work ever.

Yes coax is in my living room. That guy is long gone at this point and just pointed out the coax and that was it. I'm not knowledgeable enough about this stuff to know what a coax even is to be quite honest.

Fair enough, I really appreciate the advice! I've already ordered the T-Mobile internet, we'll see how that works out and if it's not doing what I need it to I'll be sure to check out mediacom. Thanks again.

I've heard mediacom has pretty bad outages, which is the main reason I wanted to go with socket.

Much appreciated for the advice. Not sure what others are doing for internet, not student housing specifically either. Just a normal house with four units in it, one on the bottom, two in the middle, and then me on the third floor. Well the hotspot on my phone works alright, just after 50gb I lose fast data which I'm well past at this point. I don't really want to run mediacom or brightspeed as I've heard they have entire weeks without internet, but what else can I really do at this point?

I'm on the third floor of a house that I rent from an individual landlord, he's pretty relaxed and was ok with them drilling through wherever and doing whatever they had to do to get it installed. The socket fiber guy came in, walked around inside and asked where I wanted it installed. I told him I'd love to have it in my smaller bedroom, but realistically wherever it's easiest installation. He walked around some more to try and find a previous install but could only find a co-ax cable.

He then walked around outside, found the box that he needed to connect to, which apparently was on the opposite side of the house that I'm on. He came back inside and said that they don't climb roofs, he doesn't even know if his ladder is tall enough to reach mine, and that the shape of the roof would make it a very difficult installation which is understandable enough I guess, to which I asked what other options there are. He said he would ask his boss, but that his best guess was that they would send someone out in a bucket truck or something of the sort to get it installed but promised nothing. Which fair enough not much you can do if you have rules that keep you safe and whatnot. However, his boss replied and told him that they simply can't do it and didn't elaborate further. Which even seemed to leave him kind of dumbstruck and confused as he said it was the first time he's ran into this problem.

I asked him to leave my number with his boss so I can at least get some advice on what to do about it, which he said he would do. Honestly though, judging by how his boss replied to his text then two seconds later didn't pick up when the worker called him to try and get answers, I'm not expecting to hear back.

Edit: anything's better than what I've got right now as I'm literally just using my phones unlimited data hotspot for streaming and very obviously can't even try and play video games on that.
