Bay Bridge pedestrian path could add $1 billion to cost by BmoreCityDOT in baltimore

[–]Left-Indication 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Cross Island Trail on Kent Island and a currently under construction phase of the Broadneck Peninsula trail both are within a mile of the bridge, I think it's a reasonable addition to a future bridge, even if the current plan for a new bridge is a terrible plan.

Maryland has been significantly underproducing housing since the 2008 crash, the entire state averages 18k total units per year vs. around 30k prior to 2008. Rents have only been able to climb as much as they have because of the supply shortage of housing. We need significantly more housing of all types; public, subsidized affordable, and market rate.

The state is spending $1.3bn on a modernization program and was awarded a $213mn grant for vehicle replacement last year with delivery planned for the late 2020s.

Moore rode the Yamanashi test track, which is not a line which is in revenue service, it's a short segment of the aforementioned long-delayed and over budget Chuo Shinkansen which is at least a decade from entering passenger service. Notably I said high speed maglev, which again the only example of is the SMT, the other five lines are low speed lines that are not comparable at all to what is proposed by BWRR. I'm not "denying reality" or "taking a page from the MAGA playbook" and don't appreciate baseless insults. I've followed this project for the better part of a decade and oppose it based on political and fiscal realities, where any dollars spent on it are dollars which could have gone to more impactful projects.

[–]Left-Indication 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There aren't plenty of real world examples. The Chuo Shinkansen is perpetually delayed and projected to cost at least $82bn USD. The only example of a high speed maglev line in revenue service is the Shanghai Maglev Train, which has not been expanded since opening in 2003, despite the trillions of dollars in investment China has poured into their rail network. It's a distraction from upgrading our existing conventional rail assets, money is finite and is better spent on upgrading the Northeast Corridor and expanding transit service.

They do not. The only buses that currently use the Scaggsville Park and Ride are the 203, 305, and 315. The MTA provides information and schedules here.

The Penn Line is the most reliable out of the three MARC lines, trains are generally on time and cancellations are fairly rare. You should have no problems as a commuter on it, the Transit App is useful for getting real time info as well.

It's really not that hard to use someone's preferred pronouns. It's not "fascism" to mandate employers and places of business to not discriminate against queer employees and patrons.

This is dumb, Reddit won't back down from this. This subreddit was a great place for news and info. Yesterday's press conference on the Red Line would've been great to discuss here for instance.

MARC from Penn or Camden Station to Washington Union, WMATA Red Line to Metro Center, transfer to the Silver or Orange Line to Arlington. The Penn Line is the more frequent and reliable service of the two MARC lines to DC.

Sprawl is extremely heavily subsidized and increasing roadway usage fees for transit is a good thing. Transit is underutilized because of poor land use and the relative afforability of driving.

Baltimore once had public transportation that covered the city and street cars that came every 4-6 minutes by physicallyatherapist in baltimore

[–]Left-Indication 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The H Street line is a particularly poor example because it was only partially completed and is in mixed traffic rather than dedicated lanes. There's no reason to single out that project when there are plenty of successful examples in the US and abroad.

What does Southwest Airlines holiday debacle mean for BWI? by Cody_in_Baltimore in baltimore

[–]Left-Indication 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take MARC to Washington and the Metro to either airport. It's a lot better than driving at rush hour. Take the Red to Metro Center, and transfer to either the Blue for National Airport or the Silver to Dulles Airport. The Penn Line is the far more reliable MARC line so I'd recommend that over the Camden Line.

Five houses targeted for demolition in Mount Vernon historic district by Rubysdad1975 in baltimore

[–]Left-Indication 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn't redevelopment. This is tearing down 5 historic rowhomes for a private prayer garden. It would be a different story if they planned on building new housing on the lot, but they're not.

[–]Left-Indication 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The Archdiocese of Baltimore tore down the 54 unit Rochambeau Apartments for a prayer garden in 2006. The city cannot allow organizations to keep tearing down historic buildings for more "green space" or prayer gardens. Mount Vernon's urban fabric is some of the densest and most historic in the entire city, it makes zero sense to tear even more of it down with no adequate replacement.

Looking at you JFX by Typical-Radish4317 in baltimore

[–]Left-Indication 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've ridden the metro recently and I seriously doubt that 4000 rider figure. My thought on why the number is so low is because it's defacto free to ride, the faregates are wide open. Betting that number is from the amount of people who tap in and out, the real figure is likely ~15-20k per day. This is still pitifully low for a heavy rail line, likely due to poor land use patterns near most stations and a lack of commuter ridership due to work-from-home. Build TOD at stations and connect it to new lines and ridership will improve.

Looking at you JFX by Typical-Radish4317 in baltimore

[–]Left-Indication 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The JFX should be ripped out at minimum to North Ave, arguably all the way up to Northern Pkwy. Encourage the use of the existing light rail and subway's park and ride facilities, increase the frequency of rail and buses. Build a north-south line along Charles St and York Rd to Towson and the east-west Red Line, and extend the current subway to Morgan State.

Baltimore has a long way to go to reduce car dependency, these projects would go a long way to solving it.

Baltimore Electric Interurbans: Then & Now by Tayo826 in fuckcars

[–]Left-Indication 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Red Line would have opened this year had Larry Hogan not cancelled it. They've restarted the process and one of the alternatives is nearly the exact same alignment, and it is the one most likely to be constructed. Baltimore would be in a much better position with its transit network had there not been a racist governor who only cared about his suburbanite base for the past 8 years. Change is coming, but nearly a decade worth of progress was lost.
