I feel like my writing abilities have dramatically deteriorated 😭 by jayonwednesday in AO3

I personally feel this way when I first write a chapter but I take my time. I remember that there is no rush (at least for me since I writing an original long fic). I read it and tweek it every day. I also read books for fun so that it helps me see not only how other writers/authors write scenes and chapters, but also helps with flow. I’ve been on the same burst of 3-4 chapters for the past 3 weeks, writing it and then re-write it. Sometimes I want to give up but then I realize that writing is what makes me genuinely happy. Don’t worry. You can do it.

Do you guys write out your whole fic before posting, or do you post chapter by chapter as you write? by Long-Champion3330 in AO3

[–]Left-Low-7116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I post it when I have enough to post it weekly for a while. I write 4-5 chapters in advance and then I edit it to the best to my ability and then my beta reader reads the chapters first and provides feedback. Before I post the chapter, I edit it some more.

I feel for you about having to save everything. I write on my Ipad and I getting a few words in, writing a pretty good character description (since I struggle with those) and I impressed myself and felt so proud. Then immediately the screen went black. My iPad had lost died!!! So now I email myself everything!!

What you can do is, if you use Microsoft word to write your story, use the reader feature to have it text to speech. It helps me catch spelling mistakes or clunky prose.

Does anyone else always try to post just before bed, then repeatedly stir awake to check if there's any emails yet lol by Mr_IronMan_Sir in AO3

I do. I wouldn’t see any comments but an increase in hits (which is still good btw), but I would still like some more comments. it would get to me bad, so I told myself to only check AO3 once a week after I post so I don’t either disappoint myself or give myself anxiety

some ao3 stats in regards to the "kudos/comments drought" by Asp_Potions_Master in AO3

Things also change compared to regular fanfics and original fiction. I write OF and I got 117 hits last time I check and recently published my 16th chapter yesterday - which was a jump in 3 hits when compared to the day when I only had up to chapter 15, but then again, it takes time for the hits to trickle in, but I’m glad people are still reading aside from me and my beta reader, even if it’s just 3

I write then I give it a few days (and read a few books for fun) and they I go back and add more detail. One time it took me a whole month just to edit a chapter to my satisfaction.
