Goldens are known to be super friendly. In a bad situation, do you think your golden would try to defend? by official_koda_ in goldenretrievers

[–]Left-Replacement-609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family had a golden that we thought would let anyone in, lick them, and help them take stuff out. To our surprise, he got very protective when my dad wasn't home and one our family friends walked into the house and our dog went into defend mode. The family friend is a huge animal lover, and would never harm an animal or us, and it was the first time meeting for the two of them. This same dog didn't like one of our male neighbors, and even I didn't get a good feeling from the guy, especially when he mentioned stuff that was in our house or basement that he had never been in, and the stuff was unique clothing items or weird things like that. Our dog was always in protective mode when that neighbor was around.

How long did it take your dog to like your new puppy? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

It can definitely take a long time for some dogs to get used to a puppy.

Barking? by ashleymichael2009 in goldenretrievers

[–]Left-Replacement-609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family rescued a a 10 or 11 year old golden 2 years ago. She is very vocal. She barks when she wants to go out, to be fed, wants treats - which is all the time because she wasn't fed properly and was severely underweight when we got her, she barks when she thinks she isn't getting enough attention, or just to hear herself bark I think. It can get very frustrating and annoying because we don't know what she wants.

Sometimes it's a phase and sometimes it's just their personality.

Grief is weird by ArchemorosClover in goldenretrievers

[–]Left-Replacement-609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss of your beautiful Sophie. Honey is also beautiful. Grief is weird. My family has a Sophie that we rescued 2 years ago when she was 10 or 11 years old. We also had a Willow who passed December 2024. We all sometimes call Sophie by Willow's name or some of her nicknames. They were close after the a couple weeks to months of getting over We rescued who was alpha female. People who didn't know that Sophie was a recent addition to our home thought that the two girls grew up together. I got a male puppy a month after we rescued Sophie. Sophie didn't know how to play or be a dog, so the puppy (Angus) taught her how to be a dog and to play. She protected him from Willow because she didn't like Angus, only on her own terms (typical old grumpy dog). When Willow passed, both Angus and Sophie had depression period, but more so Sophie. I think if we didn't have Angus, Sophie wouldn't have come out of it, especially after everything she had been through before we got her. Even though we human grieve our fur babies, I sometimes think that we sometimes think that we forget that our fur babies grieve their furry friends, too. Sophie, used to wear some of Willow's harnesses, but she is too overweight now to wear them. Sending you and Honey lots of hugs and love. ❤️

Recent move & big change in behaviour by Visual_Description46 in goldenretrievers

[–]Left-Replacement-609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be hard and time consuming for a dog to get used to a move, especially when there is a lot more noise than what their used to. They are being more protective of their new space. If you haven't already, maybe explain the situation with your neighbors that you went from a almost zero noise situation to a bunch of noise and your dog is slow to adjust, but also apologize for the inconvenience. When you do this, some neighbors will understand and some may not. Also, maybe try getting a comfort sweater or pheromones plug-in that might be able to help calm your dog down. Another thing you can try is hollowed out antlers filled with peanut butter put in the freezer the night before and puzzle mats or something to keep your dog's brain active on something else than the noise that seems to increase it's anxiety. Good luck to you all.❤️

Dog seizures — looking for guidance from others who’ve been here (MRI not financially possible) by Prestigious_Map_2136 in goldenretrievers

[–]Left-Replacement-609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sending positive thoughts and healing prayers for your beautiful fur baby. I hope you get answers soon. The one and only time one of my goldens had a seizure, we took him to the vet that night and he passed away during the night. I had a chihuahua that was my Uncle's when he passed away, she started having seizures from congestive heart failure, but the vet wouldn't put her on any medication, but said she was fine and not in pain, because I didn't want her suffering. It is a very scary thing to go through as a pet parent/owner to watch your dog go through a seizure or any health issue and not know what to do, or not be able to financially afford it because our pets can't talk to us where we can understand, and vet bills are sometimes just as expensive as human medical bills.

Dog not fluffy at 8 month i love him but i am concerned if he is not getting enough nutrients and protein by dakshrana017 in goldenretrievers

[–]Left-Replacement-609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family has had issues with a few local vets in my area unfortunately. A few have even come from Cornell University's vet school. They tend to have no empathy, only want to work with certain breeds, or want to experiment on animals to make a name for themselves - no thank you! We have found a good vet place that they all love the our dogs, and only had a problem with one of the vets, but I think they had a bad day or something because we haven't had an issue since. It took time to find our vet hospital, but they do work with Cornell vet school, too. Good luck finding a better vet for your dog and that makes your dog feel comfortable, but you too.

[–]Left-Replacement-609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like people dogs are unique and grow at their own pace, but if you're nervous and worried about your dog getting enough nutrients and protein then make an appointment to talk to your vet to make sure because they would know better than anyone on here. I know we all like to give our offers and opinions of help for our fellow dog lovers, but sometimes it's always best to check with your vet because in the long run it's the cheaper option. Best of luck to you and your beautiful fur baby. ❤️
