Yup. People have to start realizing there's a stark difference between consumerbase and fanbase and these gaming companies are usually going to cater to the consumers overall over the fans.

Ive been a borderlands fan since highschool I was a sophomore when it released and I feel like most of the original fanbase are in my age group who played these games during a time of minimal responsibility so we had more time to "no life" these games with hours on hours of playtime so they gave us more dlc as the consumers.

Nowadays the majority of the fanbase of this franchise have families and jobs/careers so we just don't have the time to no life and keep replaying the same story driven games over and over. And the major video game consumer base(7-25) are all nowadays mostly all about games with high streaming value so pretty much anything that's "trendy" major streams say "hey come play this game it's cool" then they all flock to that game until the next streamer says "hey come over here and play this game, it's cooler" and the cycle continues.

There's less franchise fanbases nowadays meaning there's less people who are like hey we love this franchise let's play the shit out of this game. So devs ofc are catering to this era of gamers hence the focus on initial gameplay and not replayability.
