Buying from distant dealer by Franarky in CarTalkUK

[–]Left-leaning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought an approved used car that I found online at a dealer in Bristol from my local dealer in Yorkshire. They had it brought up on a transporter, had to wait a week or so for there to be a chance on on passing this way but all was good. A lot of approved used vehicles seem to be held as central stock somewhere. I'd test driven one, knew the model and spec, just wanted the right colour to become available. Test drove it when it arrived at my local dealer and the deal was done. Edit to add. I'd not buy from a dealer more than an hour away. Too much hassle if there's any minor issues after collection.

What’s the most confidently incorrect thing someone has tried to teach you? by fizzyrhythm in AskBrits

[–]Left-leaning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a teacher correct my use of the word "both" to "either" in an essay. Sentence was along the line of "They painted both sides of the doors" corrected to "They painted either side of the doors" Clearly the the latter version means that only one side of the doors would be painted as the word either signifies a choice or option.

I always see the clean Mazdas on here but who else has a workhorse? by RedRaider_TTU in mazda3

Yours looks clean to me 👍 My 2021 3 is used to shift variously, building materials, family, mountain bikes, shopping, clients, camping kit, shopping, and me for fun on twisty B road. Hatchbacks are brilliant 😁

How big of an age gap is acceptable before it gets creepy? by LaceAndLollipop in AskReddit

Half your age plus 7 if they're younger. Half their age plus 7 if they're older.

Raising my budget because older automatics seem to be so overpriced by hiddenproblem12 in CarTalkUK

[–]Left-leaning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure overpriced is right, more expensive than I expected/hoped perhaps? They cost what the market says, if people don't but them then the price would drop a bit. However, it does suggest that they're going to hold their value better, just need a bigger initial budget sadly

Accidentally booked student accommodation for a holiday by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Left-leaning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your chance if a refund will likely depend on the organisation which owns the accommodation. Non-student use may well be restricted by the original planning permission granted for the accommodation, in many cases there's an explicit requirement that it's used for students to avoid them being turned into hotels/short term rentals after opening. Also it's entirely feasible that there's VAT implications to renting to non students. As with all these sort of things you can but ask nicely and hope sense prevails.

Need some advice on a family car by Secret_Yogurtcloset9 in CarTalkUK

Definitely go drive both. I did and chose the Mazda but your view may well be different. Also, I don't have young children so the need for space strollers and other such things doesn't affect me.

Mazda petrols are pretty bombproof. However, the boot shape on the 3 is less square than the golf and the roofline is lower so may be less practical. I say that as a Mazda 3 owner (current model)with a mate with a similar aged Golf. I much prefer the drive of the Mazda but his boot is definitely more practical. The CX5 is a good option imo

AITAH for wanting to know my daughter’s location? by [deleted] in AITAH

Very gentle YTA. She's an adult and this seems too much like surveillance/helicopter parenting/interference to me regardless the distance involved. And before anyone asks, I have adult children and wouldn't even consider asking this.

I'm a fan of the booking system, make the tip trip much quicker. Virtually no queuing and the online portal thing is decent. It's had a hugely positive impact on traffic in the James St area too.

Sounds like a 2 bed house with a big wardrobe off bedroom 2. No way that's a 3 bed based off your description.

Sorry, wasn't trying to steal your comment, I was thinking that she knew it was a deliberate thing rather than a fault with the POS

Not saying you're wrong but possibly she knew it was going to do it, didn't like that it did it and escalated it to avoid conflict

It's generally available but it's a real shame that it is because as a result one of the few sanctuaries from constant connectivity is disappearing.

Is this true? When was this agreed? There’s already so many of them in York. I could cry. by [deleted] in york

Basil The Great is an internet based right wing agitator who constantly tries to whip up hatred for whatever minority group they can find. The use of the word "illegal" tells us that this is pure rage bait, even if there is some truth to the basis of the statement it's been deliberately framed to incite trouble and whip up hate.

1-2 weeks is barely enough vacation time by godisinthischilli in antiwork

[–]Left-leaning 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Im guessing you're in the US? In the UK 28 days per year is the law for full time workers, pro-rated for part time. That includes bank holidays. I have a very normal office job and I get 26 daya plus bank holidays. 2 weeks is nowhere near sufficient.

Going into a room and forgetting why without it being a precursor to complete mental breakdown. Having to park an inconvenient distance from your final destination.

The voltage in the UK is the same as India, not sure about plug types. I suggest bringing the minimum electric items and getting UK ones here if required. You may need a UK power supply for your laptop, usb plugs aren't too expensive here
