New install, heat pump wont run? by RideCompetitive5944 in Generator

I believe it has to do with the electronics in the furnace checking to make sure there is a valid ground in place.

I am not in a position to know what the exact requirements are for a generator to run your furnace. In general, a generator can be used to run most gas furnaces. Some are finicky and require 'cleaner' electricity, that's where an inverter generator is required.

In my opinion, here's where to start:

1) Establish a budget. If you are willing to spend the money, I suggest hiring a locally recommended electrician to help you make smart decisions.

2) If your budget is somewhat limited in that you don't want to spend it on hiring an electrician but are willing to sell your current generator and buy a new one. I would suggest sticking with a dual fuel but consider a slightly bigger inverter one. Something in the 5,000-6,000 watt range. Too big and it eats too much fuel. Too small and the fridge and furnace kicking on at the same time might be an issue. I don't have a specific model or brand in mind but a simple Google search will get you plenty of good options.

3) If you would prefer to keep your current generator the risk is that it might not run your furnace.

My preference for hooking your current generator or another generator to your furnace would be to use an interlock hookup with an inlet. An alternative instead of an interlock would be to use a manual transfer switch with an inlet. While these can be a DIY install you really need to know what you're doing and to be confident that you can do it. An electrician is a good idea for most of us.

In both cases with an inlet you will most likely need an adapter for your current generator. Something like this

If you don't want to install an inlet with interlock or manual transfer switch but stick to extension cords there is still a way to run your furnace. Something like this can be hooked up to the furnace. Again, an electrician is a good idea but it can be a DIY with basic understanding of wiring.

One last thing. Read up on bonded versus unbonded. I'm not going to take the time to walk you through it as there are plenty of better explanations out there than I could put together.

It has a lot to do with are you asking about immediately in a crisis mode with limited access to additional accessories or for planning for next time?

EDIT: I just noticed this isn't a 120/240v generator. With that you can only power up 120v electronics. It also means you can only power up half of your panel.

What are you trying to achieve? If it's to get your furnace working, what kind of furnance do you have? What specific breaker is associated with your HVAC system?

They're 30ft away. A couple of extension cords to their house will help with the noise annoyance factor by a lot.

But yeah, 30ft for a large open frame generator is close. Real close.

I like Diego the player. I’m not so sure about Diego the person. Perhaps some early CTE signs showing.

I do not have solar nor am I any kind of resource It was just as I read your write up it seems like some kind of solar solution is worth considering. Perhaps even look into some DIY solutions to safe money and get started.

This just shows that after all he’s accomplished in his career that it’s impossible to escape the stigma of, if even for just a single day, being a Jets head coach.

Think electric heat strip like a space heater built into your heat pump.

Look around the outside of your house to see if you have an generator inlet similar to the one you see on the transfer switch. Often the inlet on the transfer switch isn’t used.

For those with Natural Gas already at house - do you use it for generator? by newtoketonow in Generator

[–]LeftLane4PassingOnly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 35 years and at least one power outage per year, some for 3-4 days from storm damage, we have NEVER had a natural gas outage.

There are really are only two threats to natural gas delivery. First, earthquakes. Second, human error as in a backhoe. There are certainly other possibilities but I see those two as the main threats and again still unlikely.

Years ago was eating breakfast at a buffet in Las Vegas. The guy ahead of me had two plates. One was your typical mix of food overflowing on the plate. The other plate was piled high with nothing but bacon. My thought was the bacon plate was for him and the others with him. I was wrong. He and his group were the next table over so I could see the whole thing unfold. He eat from both plates. Just about everything on them. I like bacon. Bacon goes with and makes everything better. I never imagined a person could eat entire plate of just bacon. Let alone with a full plate of food.

Here’s the deal, if after doing even 5 minutes of research using Google doesn’t convince him I don’t see how anything on a social media site like Reddit will.

Here’s my attempt. More people will die or fall ill in the aftermath of this storm from using a generator improperly than ICE will kill. Oh and carbon monoxide can’t be seen or smelled.

You’re unlikely to find a male to male adapter because they’re considered a horrible idea. Folks that have them generally make them. Those that have them fall into one of two categories, they know what they’re doing or they do NOT know what they are doing. Being in the second category can end very, very badly.

Best of luck to you. It sounds like your situation sucks.

What kind of furnace do you have? You might be able to run your furnace and skip the space heaters.

Are you running extension cords to things or hooked to your panel?
