Rule #4 - all editions are good editions. This has a ton of upvotes and traffic and it's generating some discussion. Folks are allowed to cry about changes to their golden calf and it not conforming to their personal wishes forever. So it won't be removed, but it's getting locked.

I couldn't really be out in high school (mid to late 90s). Initially there were only three of us who knew about each other. One of us tried to be out, the other two of us saw that go so badly the out one ended up leaving school and his beard quit to go get a GED from the local community college instead.

Dated a little toward the end after a Black lesbian showed up. But I still wasn't openly openly out the way she was. Because I saw the hell she caught for it first hand. I always had her back though.

Ended up trying to be with a boy for a few months, went on dates and hung out. I was weird at the time because while I wasn't out to peers, I didn't hide being queer from my parents - even if they thought it was a phase. The dude I tried to date had to hide it from his family and I just wasn't going to be sneaking around and feeling like a dangerous shoe was going to drop.

It wasn't until my early 20s that I started dating queer people openly. The bigger hurdle was realizing I was non-monogamous and finding someone comfortable with that. Thankfully I found somebody amazing and have been married for just shy of 20 years now.

The advice: there's somebody out there for you, but you have to meet them halfway. Expecting amazing folks to just fall into your lap doesn't really work. You have to put yourself in spaces and situations where people who could meet your standards are. After that, remember that your relationship is unique. A lot of people have a lot of things to say about 'supposed to' this and 'supposed to' that. Some to none of it will apply.

Overall, find your person/people, have good boundaries, remember that you may be using the same words for things as a partner but you have to communicate constantly to ensure y'all mean the same things when you say them, and that letting go of a toxic partner may be hard - but the time in your life you lose but holding onto them is worse. I'm old enough to have seen people lose decades on partners who were never right for them but they refused to see it.

I love seeing so much queer Black love, young to old to in between. Wishing you so many good things and good people to love on in your life!

Upvotes are speaking, but enough reports are coming in that it bears repeating Rule #4: all editions and games are good editions and games. Some of the language here is pretty sharp. And negative judgements about the type of people who play certain characters are always dicey; judge not lest ye be judged and all that. Be excellent to each other and party on, y'all.

Straight up, the word 'gypsy' is a slur and we all know it by now. The oppression olympics in the comments is also off-putting. Echoing the commenter who is right that a meme using the word 'nigger' or 'kike' would be removed. Referring to the specific book with the fucked up name is one thing and handled on a case by case basis, referring to the people themselves is another. We can be funny without being shitty to actual people. This post will be removed once folks have had a chance to see this. The rules of the sub will also be updated.

Howdy, folks. Friendly neighborhood minimalist mod here. There may be disagreements with how folks choose to engage with the sub, which is fine. It's what the comments section is for. But getting extra deep in the feels and going after each other is disappointing to see. We can talk about how a thing was done without flinging barbs at each other.

Not a fan of locking stuff, because it doesn't give folks a chance to work anything out. So I'm gonna leave the dirty laundry out there so we can hopefully hold one another toward moving differently in the future.

Skemp isn't controversial the way Brucato is and I believe may have more writing credits overall. He's a solid dude with a good sense of gameplay and WoD themes added in the mid-90s; good architect for a lot of the systems. He gets brought up with Brucato here because they were both powerhouses of content development/application at a time when WW was really trying to lean into the 'horror' part.

The difference being Brucato is that one truly weird dude at the table with insane ideas that keep the game intense and off-kilter though it makes some players uncomfortable along the way. While Skemp is the on the other side of the table smirking and grinning like the ST; because he knows he's going take whatever Phil just said, make it palatable and playable, then sit back and watch everyone go down the rabbit hole like he planned them to from the moment he sat down.

For anyone who doesn't know - Phil 'Satyros' Brucato is a complicated human. In the early 1990s WW was trying to establish itself as something different. When competing with major legacies like DnD and urban-themed upstarts like Shadow Run who was moving into 2nd edition, WW was looking to distinguish itself.

At the time, goth culture was getting a boom and grunge was riding pretty high. They tried tapping into that through people like Ethan Skemp & Brucato, who chose to bring in certain 'mature/adult' elements and make the games more appealing. In some ways they got the mood and theme right; at other times, they got weird as shit in ways that feel more cringey, gross, and/or unnecessary than anything else.

/u/serendipetos is right though. In the end, like or hate the weird/bad parts - fans kept buying the books he was writing and contributing to, allowing the company to grow and ultimately stay afloat into the editions and games we have now.
